The violent killer clown trend which swept the world two years ago is about to make an unwanted comeback, police have warned.

The return of Stephen Kings horror film IT, which features Pennywise the clown, this month is prompting fears the trend could return.

In the autumn of 2016 people dressed as clowns started terrorising people in America causing car accidents, injuries and a lot of police work trying to find the culprits.

The trend quickly spread to the UK and beyond. It eventually became illegal to dress as a clown and harass people in the UK.

In the space of 24 hours on day in October 2016, Thames Valley Police attended 14 reports of people being intimidated or frightened by people dressed as clowns.

Many of the clowns pictured or videoed had weapons with them, and there were even instances of schoolchildren being threatened.

ThePennsylvania State Police department anticipates the release of IT in cinemas will inspire troublemakers to put the make up and big shoes on.

In a statement the department said: It is anticipated that creepy clown sightings could be reported starting as soon as September, in part due to the fact that the movie IT will be released in theatres.

At the time of the craze in 2016 police forces began to clamp down on clown copycats due to the sheer volume of complaints.

Chief Supt Andy Boyd, from Thames Valley Police, said: While we do not want to be accused of stopping people enjoying themselves, we would also ask those same people to think of the impact of their behaviour on others and themselves. Their actions can cause fear and anxiety to other people, this could be perceived to be intimidating and threatening which could lead to public order offences, arrest and a criminal record.

He added: In addition, their behaviour is causing multiple reports to our call takers and is tying up police resources which could impact on calls to other incidents.
