Review: Annabelle: Creation (2017) – Buzz.ie

Annabelle: Creation is the prequel to the film Annabelle which is a prequel to The Conjuring. That's not confusing at all! I went in totally blind, having not seen either movie before and ended up quite impressed.

I don't really mind scary movies, I've seen a lot of them. A horror movie needs a lot of things to make it really scary; a convincing cast, excellent sound design and some precision timing when it comes to the scares. Annabelle: Creation pulls it all off relatively well.

This movie follows a group of orphans who go out to a remote part of California to live with a man and his wife. Very little is known about the wife (at the start) but straight off the bat, things start to get unsettling in the house.

This was probably the best part of the movie for me; the first 45 minutes, before we knew too much. It was, scary and intense and more than once the hairs on my arms stood up and I wanted to look away from the screen. I was almost looking forward to getting back outside in the warm daylight.

I think the reason movies like this are great in the cinema is the sound... Sound plays a huge role in building tension and it was fantastic in this movie.

Unfortunately, I feel like this movie took a bit of a turn in the second half. In the movie The Babadookthe fear factor disappears a good bit when the Babadok is finally revealed, he just looks a bit stupid.

When we finally see the monster in Annabelle it is very creepy but just didn't quite cut it. The second half of the movie turns into a survival type movie and a lot of the scares disappear.

The acting in the movie was very well done. For the most part, it is the kids who are centre screen and they put on a great performance.

The art is the movie is great and that doll is so damn creepy it works really well. Look at this fecking face:

THE GOOD:

THE BAD:

Annabelle: Creation is a good movie, it's not great. It is the perfect movie to bring a boyfriend or girlfriend to if they scare easily. If you're looking for something memorable and deep this isn't it but if you want to have the sh*t scared out of you for an hour or so then check it out.
