The Walking Dead season 8: Norman Reedus reveals Daryl Dixon storyline he had AXED – Express.co.uk

The Alexandrian has gained a legion of fans due to his blossoming friendship with Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) and his protective nature.

But it has been revealed that he could have been just as controversial as his brother Merle (Michael Rooker) as Daryl was originally written to be very racist and addicted to drugs.

However, Norman Reedus, who stars as Daryl, wasnt too impressed with his character and fought to change the scripts.

When you first see him, hes such an angry guy, Norman told CNET. He basically wouldve turned into his brother.

But hes found a sense of self-worth through these people that he wouldve never hung out with before. Now that group relies on him.

He continued: I mean, he started out like, Dont look at me, dont look at me. He had a chip on his shoulder, like he wasnt comfortable being him.

There was always scripts that had him taking drugs and being racist, like his brother was. I fought to change those because I felt he should be more an Al-Anon member and not a full-blown Alcoholics Anonymous member.

He should have grown up with it, felt ashamed of it, and wasnt comfortable with who he was, Norman went on to add. That allows him to grow into somebody you respect.

Following the changes made to the script, the actor said he is pleased with how his character has grown, concluding: Now hes a leader and he calls the shots with Rick. Ricks the brother that Merle never was.

It comes after the 48-year-old revealed how he would like to see his character killed off the zombie series.

I think youd see a sunset. I would walk up over a hill and then a little wolf puppy would come out of the woods and follow me up, he said. And people would just go, Whatever happened to that guy?

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 22 and will follow on FOX UK the following day.
