Street robbers have developed a terrifying method to attack their victims in a bid to steal their valuables.

Dozens of robbers can be seen walking along the street separately before choosing a victim, surrounding them and robbing them.

Dubbed ' The Walking Dead zombie muggers' by local media in Colombia the technique has been compared to like something from the popular American TV show.

A video of one of the attacks in the Colombian capital Bogota shows an victim surrounded by dozens of assailants who materialise out of a side street to rob him.

The CCTV recording shows that the sheer numbers of attackers make it impossible for the man to fight back.

He is quickly knocked to the ground and has his briefcase wrestled away from him.

The attackers then simply stroll away.

Javier Ospina, city councillor for the Martires area, where the attack took place shared the footage.

He said the robbery strategy was becoming more commonplace.

He explained: "The victim is asked for a coin and if he does not give it, he is assaulted by a crowd.

"This is a new modality used by those who are living in the street and are organised by drug trafficking gangs acting in the area."

Mr Ospina called for extra police patrols at night, as this is when the robberies take place.

The Walking Dead is one of TVs most popular shows. It premiered in 2010 and is based on the comic book series of the same name by Tony Moore, Charlie Adlard and Robert Kirkman.
