See Jason Isbell’s moving, animated new ‘If We Were Vampires’ video – EW.com (blog)

When Jason Isbell and his lead backing back, the 400 Unit, returned this summer with The Nashville Sound, they came plugged in and ready to rock. Hope the High Road, the sets electric lead single, and the chugging White Mans World both punch up the lyrical ire along with the low-end grooves while the nearly seven-minute Anxiety provides a master class in sprawling fretwork. The album finds gravity, however, in If We Were Vampires, the sweet, sparse meditation on inevitable, future loss.

Today, EW is thrilled to premiere the tunes accompanying video. Helmed by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard, the clip embraces animation for a trippy, emotional result whichhas the singer pumped. Joshua and Nielson did a great job of riding the fine line between literal and figurative interpretations of this song, Isbell tells EW via email. I love the story the video tells, the colors, and the pace of movement. The song deals with death as motivation, the way love changes, and the persistence of time, and I see these themes in the beautiful animation.

If We Were Vampires is streaming above. Isbell is currently on tourwith dates currently stretching into November, and the new tracks prove welcome additions to the nightly setlist. As he told EW back in March, I got lucky on this album that I had a good set of songs that I think will keep everybody awake.
