A Port Lavaca teenager with brain cancer copes with the recent diagnosis with a little humor.

In December, Arianna Silvas learned she has a rare type of tumor that cannot be treated with chemotherapy.

Her family and friends are planning a benefit Sunday called "Save the Zombie Food" to help defray medical costs and cancer treatment.

"That's what she came up with, so we'll go with it," said her mother, Ashley Silvas.

She said her 13-year-old daughter is currently on a "watch and wait" approach as she undergoes many MRI sessions.

Arianna is being treated at Texas Children's Hospital, the same hospital she helped at the age of 8 by collecting toys for cancer patients.

She and her sister created "Gifts for Angels" so the children would have a good Christmas.

Arianna is an eighth-grader at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic School in Port Lavaca.

Her father is Roland Silvas. She has three siblings: Samantha, 10; Emmanuel, 6; and Gabriel, 3.

Ashley Silvas said she's thankful so many people are willing to help her daughter.

The event at Irma's Ballroom will feature a ballet folklorico group, choir singer, silent auction, cake walk, bake sale, children's activities and more. Crazy About Mangonadas 2 will also set up its food truck, and hamburger plates will be sold.

"We just feel like she's really been called to lead people to God," her mother said.
