Most divisive movies ever: A ‘Star Wars’ film, documentary and comedy special top the list – USA TODAY

What are the most divisive films in history?

That's something that cinephiles can no doubt argue but product review site RAVE Reviews came up with an as-objective-as-possible list of divisive films based on discrepancies in film ratings from critics and the audienceof the top 100 movies on Rotten Tomatoes.

So which movies do viewers disagree on most? The list of most divisive movies of all time includesRian Johnson's 2017 "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," which criticslauded but fans widely condemned; and higher on the list is Netflix documentary "Knock Down The House" and Netflix comedy special "Nanette," which were both praised by nearly 100% of critics but condemned by most of the audience.

Is the list legit? It's hard to ignore the fact that trolling could be at playwith audience reviews, especially when you consider how Internet commenters have elsewhere put down some of the women who star in films on this list ("Nanette" comedian Hannah Gadsby, "Knock Down the House" subject Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and "Last Jedi" lead Kelly Marie Tran, for example).

Then again, as of February 2019, Rotten Tomatoes announced it was cracking down on so-called review bombing whenit saw the audience score of "Captain Marvel" plummet before the film was released, and it has since made sure that only reviews from verified viewers count toward audience scores.

Another aspect to consider when viewing the divisive list: Most critics reviewed the movies when they were first released, but many audience memberswatched older films years later, and perhaps without the same context(and special-effects awe) as the first round of viewers.

OK, we'll stop analyzing now and let movie fans debate about how debatable these movies are.

9. Donald and Kiefer Sutherland movie "Forsaken" (2016; Critic Score: 42; Audience Score: 87)

10. Documentary"I Am" (2011; Critic Score: 36; Audience Score: 80)

Other notable films in the studyinclude:

Steven Spielberg classic "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," which is considered the most divisive movie to come out of the '80s (1982; Critic Score: 98; Audience Score: 72) and animated Dreamworks movie "Antz," the most divisive '90s film (1998; Critic Score: 92; Audience Score: 52).
