‘Like a horror movie’: Candice Hedge describes moments after London attack – The Sydney Morning Herald

Australian woman Candice Hedge has described the moment her fortunes turnedwhen a knife-wielding attacker launched himself at her after she was caught up in the London attack.

Ms Hedge, 34, was stabbed in the neck during the attack after three men stormed Borough Market.

Howeverthe Brisbane woman was resolutedespite having suffered severe injuries that initially left her unable to talk.

"I'm not going to be deterred, I've got more to do here, the last thing Iwant is to be scared off by this," she said on Channel Seven's Sunday Night.

"We can't let our lives be ruled by fear. We can't be scared, what's the point in life if we're scared everyday?

"I'm not going to let them change my life."

Hedge was working with her British boyfriend, Luke, atBorough Market's Elliot's Cafe when the three men launched their attack.

Ms Hedge's boyfrienddescribed the moment he looked out the window and saw the attackersjust metres away.

"I decided to just go out and have a look and see what was going on. No more than 15 metres away there were two guys waving around knives, one of them had a fairly big machete in his hand," he said.

The attackers soon after entered the restaurant, where they stabbed a number of people while shouting"This is for Allah",Luke said.

Ms Hedge was huddled in a corner of the restaurant while Lukeattempted to move the customers downstairs to the kitchen.

"One was standing basically beside me as Iwas huddled down in the corner," she said.

"It really happened quite quickly, they didn't stick around for too long. As heturned to leave he saw me there and just went in for the quick jab and got me right in the neck."

In the moments after the attack, Ms Hedge feared that she was going to die.

"I could feel the amount of blood and it was warm on my hand and I was vomiting blood, quite a bit, like three orfour times just because it kept coming.

"And I could see how much it was and, you know, you see horror movies it was like that. I was thinking for a moment that I wasn't going to make it."

Luckily for Ms Hedge, the knife narrowly missed her major arteries and vocal chords. She remains in intensive care but is expected to make a full recovery.

Ms Hedge was one of four Australians caught up in the attack, with nurse Kirsty Boden and au pairSara Zelenaklosing their livesas a result of injuries sustained during the incident.
