Sonequa Martin-Green almost missed out on Star Trek: Discovery because of The Walking Dead – DigitalSpy.com

She was the top pick to lead the new Star Trek series, but Sonequa Martin-Green almost missed out on the role of a lifetime.

Martin-Green explained to Digital Spy that she was still attached to The Walking Dead, in which she played Sasha, when Bryan Fuller first approached her.

"Being able to sit down with him and hear his vision for this iteration was astounding," she recalled.

"The script was brilliant and I said, 'Oh! I need to do this. I need to do this.' That's how it all came about. Then the opportunity left and came back, which was around December."

Fuller would later exit Star Trek: Discovery as showrunner and recently revealed that Martin-Green's availability was part of the reason why the series was pushed back until this September.

"At that point, Bryan had also made the transition out, but as the executive producers have beautifully said, everybody felt like it was the best thing," she added. "And so we hit the ground running."

Martin-Green wrapped filming on The Walking Dead in late 2016, but said that she was initially unaware Discovery was waiting on her.

"Now that we're in production, I'm getting titbits of just how strategic it was," she explained. "At one point, I knew that they had moved on from me because there were some scheduling conflicts with The Walking Dead.

"But then, when it came back, I realised what had happened. I have been realising more and more just how purposeful it was."

Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on CBS and CBS All Access on Sunday, September 24 at 8.30/7.30c and will be available the following day on Netflix in the UK.
