Over time, viewers can track the development or regression of the characters on a show. With every choice and action, a character changes, and what they do next will reflect that change. They move forward as a new person.

OnThe Vampire Diaries, the characters are layered, and a redemption arc did not just mean they were killing fewer people. Being the villain did not mean they did not have a motive. Getting better may not have meant as much morally as it did about showing a character adjusting and growing into their abilities. And while some characters got better over time, others became worse.
Bonnie was only discovering her witch powers in the show's first season. With the help of her grandmother, Bonnie practiced magic and became more comfortable with spells and incantations. As the show continued, Bonnie improved as a witch, tackling any problem that she and her friends had to conquer in Mystic Falls. However, Bonnie also grew as a person. Perhaps Bonnie's most utilized trait in the series is her selflessness, always sacrificing her happiness for others. Over time, even as Bonnie wanted to put herself first later, she still gave her all to save her friends and hometown.
For a guy whose friends are mostly involved in the supernatural, Matt despised it in later seasons. Matt was desperate to latch onto his humanity, never wanting to get the help of vampiresto heal himself when there was a human doctor nearby.

Matt's dislike of vampires was heightened during the last two seasons when his attitude toward Stefan changed from viewing him as a friend to despising him. Matt had believed that Stefan had a hand in the death of his fianc and had hated him afterward. Matt strove to return Mystic Falls to the safe place he knew it to be growing up.
At first, an enemy, Enzo, later grew into a friend for the heroes. His loyalties bounced between the Salvatore brothers and their mother until eventually landing on standing with Stefan and Damon. Enzo valued Damon as a friend and looked out for him while they were working with the Sirens. He also formed a romantic relationship with Bonnie during the time jump that evolved into Enzo being willing to take the Cure and grow old with Bonnie. Unfortunately, that plan was cut short when a humanity-less Stefan killed Enzo. Afterward, Enzo appeared as a ghost to remind Bonnie that she was not done living yet.
Elena may have had significant relationships with Bonnie and Caroline, but there were times in Elena's last seasons where those were grossly disregarded. Proof of this comes when Elena is so wrapped up in her relationship with Damon that she never notices that Bonnie is dead.

It is hard to believe that season one Elena would have been so oblivious to Bonnie's situation. Elena also had a way of ignoringDamon's wrongdoingseven when they were inexcusable. She forgave Damon for killing Jeremy and for treating her friends awfully.
While Kai is a villain, he has a presence that could not be ignored during his time on the show. While Kai was a sociopath, and no one was rooting for him to succeed in his endeavors, he still became a fan-favorite. Chris Wood's performance gained him a passionate following who were excited to see him revive the character duringLegacies. While Kai never became a better person, as he is unredeemable, Kai became a more significant antagonist. Regardless of mass murders or manipulations, Kai always had a plan up his sleeve.
Damon's placement on this list may be controversial, given his redemption arc. However, while Damon and Stefan worked toward patching up their relationship, Damon had issues that never went away.Even though Damon fought on the right side of the battle, he still allowed his selfishness to consume him. After season six, without Elena, Damon struggled to be a better person. He quickly fell into old and problematic ways.In a rage, Damon killed Tyler, and there were no consequences for his actions then, or his actions with Caroline back at the beginning of the series.
Like Kai, Katherine was a fan-favorite given the presence she had in an episode. She was manipulative, intelligent, and fun to watch. Katherine always found new and innovative ways to keep herself hidden when she had no interest in being found.

While Katherine's last scheme did not work out in her favor, she outwitted everyone else on multiple occasions. Katherine's appearance in an episode meant things were bound to get interesting. Viewers could always count on Katherine to bring some extrea attitude to the show. Even after dying, Katherine still found ways to return and wreak havoc.
Tyler went through various stages of development duringThe Vampire Diaries'8-season run. Initially, a football player that tended to be a jerk, Tyler developed into a better person after turning into a werewolf. For a while, his relationship with Caroline kept Tyler grounded. However, after being turned into a hybrid, Tyler was sired to Klaus, setting off a new set of issues. Yet, the worst of Tyler's actions came after Klaus brutally killed Tyler's mother. Tyler was determined to get retribution for his mother's death and left Mystic Falls to follow Klaus to New Orleans. In "Bloodletting," a season 1 episode ofThe Originals, Tyler attempted to kill Hayley (still pregnant with Hope) and Klaus.
If there was any individual on the show that went through significant character development, it was Caroline. She became a stronger person after turning into a vampire, and the insecurities she had as a human seemed to be replaced by confidence. Caroline came into her own as she controlled her abilities and learned how to live with the possibility of living forever. She also had to figure out how to move on after the death of her mother. Caroline went on to carry and give birth to Josie and Lizzie. In the last minutes of the series finale, Caroline and Alaric worked together to create the Salvatore School.
The Vampire Diaries took chances in showing what type of show it would be from the very beginning. Quick to show how fast lives can end in Mystic Falls, Damon turned Matt's sister into a vampirein "Lost Girls," the 6th episode of season 1. Although Vicki did not have a lot of time to grow into her own, she appeared in various guest appearances after being killed by Stefan. Vicki returned as a ghostin storylines when there was no reason for her to be there. Vicki's recurring role lasted all the way to the series finale, "I Was Feeling Epic," when she was told by Katherine to ring the bell until Hellfire erupted in Mystic Falls, and burned the town.
