What We Do in the Shadows ended Season 2 on an exciting and unexpected cliffhanger, which leaves the future for its main characters uncertain.
What We Do in the Shadows recently wrapped its second season, and the finale completely upended the status quo for the show's main characters. Based on the movie of the same name from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, and set in the same continuity, the series follows a group of hapless vampires living in Staten Island. Most episodes involve them bumbling their way through basic human interactions as the vampires are so old and detached, they are comically misinformed as to how the modern world works. They have been held together through the thankless efforts of Nandor the Relentless's familiar, Guillermo, but all that is set to change.
Over the course of the first two seasons, Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo and Colin Robinson have inadvertently become pariahs in vampire society primarily because of the actions of Guillermo. In Season 1, Guillermo accidentally murdered their house guest, Baron Afanas after opening the front door and letting the sun in. When the vampires (minus Colin Robinson) were wrongly sentenced to death by the Vampiric Council for the Baron's murder, Guillermo tried to save his master, fending off another vampire with a cross, unintentionally causing him to fall back on a torch and stake himself. After the rescue, all seemed well enough.

However, unbeknownst to the vampires, Guillermo discovered a terrible secret about his lineage at the end of Season 1 that has sent him on a collision course not only with his vampire master but with his own ideals and dreams. To his horror, Guillermo learns that he is a distant descendant of the famed vampire hunter, Abraham Van Helsing. This is devastating to him, as all Guillermo has ever wanted was to be a vampire himself. He's spent ten years of his life serving Nandor in an attempt to become one and now he has discovered that killing vampires is in his blood.
Season 2 explored this further, showing that Guillermo possesses an instinctual and almost preternatural ability to slay vampires. Killing a vampire is an offense that results in death even for another vampire, and vampire hunters are universally despised. To make matters worse, the Vampiric Council hasn't forgotten about the group's escape from punishment and has been continually sending vampire assassins to finish off Nandor, Nadja, and Laszlo. But the vampires in the house are oblivious to this, as Guillermo has secretly been killing every intruder and hiding it from his master. He correctly fears that if any of the vampires in the house were to learn of his lineage or that he has been killing vampires, that he'll be killed.

Although Nandor began to have his suspicions and a rift grew between him and his familiar, nothing was confirmed until the Season 2 finale. The Vampiric Council sets a trap to capture the vampires, now accusing them all (including Colin Robinson) of the killings perpetrated entirely by Guillermo. With their final death approaching, Guillermo decides to return and save his master. What ensued was a bloodbath that would've made Blade proud. Guillermo slays nearly every vampire in attendance save Jemaine Clement's Vladislav the Poker, a protagonist from the original film who appeared in the finale.
With the truth of Guillermo's abilities laid bare for his master and the others to see, there is no going back to the way things used to be. It's pretty much a guarantee that the Vampiric Council is not done with the vampires, and are bound to return for even more revenge. Before, the vampires were oblivious to the numerous attempts on their life, but now that they know, it's unclear if they will return to their home. It seems entirely likely that the group will abandon their abode and go into hiding. Viewers havealready seen this behavior before when Laszlo fled from Jim the Vampire and assumed a new identity after refusing to pay Jim an overdue bill.

Season 3 could very well find the vampires on the run as they attempt to smooth things over with the Vampiric Council. The group has no small amount of enemies who are in good standing with the council, so there are ample opportunities to weave back in previous characters. Jim learned that Laszlo duped him yet again and was last seen cursing his name. Simon the Devious has lost much of his status and dignity, but he was a major player in New York for over a century-- and he will still stop at nothing to get Laszlo's beloved cursed witch hat, which despite Nadja's continued protests, he will not relinquish.
The Vampiric Council may also look to outside help in hunting down the Staten Island crew since their assassins failed at every attempt. Even though Guillermo managed to work out a deal to provide the local Witches with deliveries of Nandor and Laszlo's semen in lieu of them graphically and painfully extracting it, the Council may strike a better deal. Witches for some reason, love using Vampire semen for rituals (and making magnets) so an opportunity to access a larger supply would be more than they could resist. There's also the local werewolf pack, who definitely have a beef with the housemates.
But the biggest question ultimately concerns Guillermo. He has gone through the most significant character arc in the show, and the vampires who belittled, abused and berated him for ten years are now keenly aware they owe him their life. They also know that he's a vampire slayer. Will they tolerate his murderous nature to help save their skins or will it finally drive a wedge between the familiar and those he serves? He's been repeatedly shown how little he's respected, and although he admires their power and immortality, Guillermo has struggled constantly with the moral ramifications of luring innocent people to the house so they can be eaten. Season 3will undoubtedly build on this plotline, as Guillermo has become something of a breakout character.
