Every Video Game Releasing In September And What You Need To Play – Forbes

Here are all the video games releasing in September 2020 and what to play.

Well were officially entering the busy season for video games. Its already been a pretty busy year despite the coronavirus pandemic leading to shutdowns and quarantines and the business of actually making video games hitting a pretty hard wall.

You certainly wouldnt know that based on Septembers video game release list. A bunch of games are on their way including some pretty big ones. From superheroes to zombies, scheming lords to pro skaters, theres a little bit of something for everyone in September.

I highlight some of the biggest releases (and the games Im most looking forward to) and follow that up with the full release list below if you just want to skip ahead. Some of these games will also release on next-gen systems, but for now (obviously) theyre all current-gen releases.

Heres everything coming out in September and what to keep an eye on.

Its been eight years since Crusader Kings II released as one of the most hardcore Medieval strategy games out therea complex, incredibly deep game of war and politicking, diplomacy and backstabbing. In other words, the closest thing to a Game of Thrones game (in spirit, if not in name) out there.

Now the long-awaited sequel is upon us. From the game demo I watched, its going to still have all the depth of its predecessor while making things a bit more accessible to newcomers to the series (and/or genre).4

This game just landed on my radar and Im pretty hyped about it. Im always looking for a fun new battle royale to play and this checks a lot of boxes I didnt even know I wanted, and a few I did. For instance, this is a battle royale game all about magic. There arent guns but there are a bunch of different magical powers you can use (and combine) to wreak havoc on your enemies.

Its also cross-play, which means I can play the game on my PS4 while my kids play on their Nintendo Switch consoles and we can all team up with someone on PC or Xbox One. Hopefully it also comes to next-gen (assuming, you know, that its fun).

This is the big one. Marvels Avengers is the first big Avengers game (other than some mobile stuff) for this console generation, even as this generation enters its end-of-life phase. I didnt get into the beta, but from what Ive heard people have enjoyed itwarts and all.

I have a review copy of the game so Ill be diving in when it releases on September 4th. At launch you can play as Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel), Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor and Hulk, with more heroes coming after launch. Theres a single-player campaign but the main thrust of the game is co-op multiplayer.

I predict it gets off to a bit of a rough start but bounces back to become a pretty big hit.

The nostalgia is strong with this one. I used to spend inordinate amounts of time playing the first two games way back in the day and I actually got pretty good at themthough Ive forgotten all the tricks and my skills are no doubt wicked rusty at this point.

Thats fine. Ill learn it all again. Its like riding, well, a skateboard. Both games fully remastered for modern consoles, most of the awesome old 90s tracks from bands like Rage Against The Machine to listen to. Im so excited to introduce these games to my kids. I cant wait.

If you didnt play these back in the day, youre in for a treat.

I have to say, just writing the words Kingdoms of Amalur brings back memories of a simpler time. It was a decent game steeped in controversy and scandal and it never became the breakout success its creators were hoping for.

THQ Nordic bought up the rights and have remastered it for modern consoles as the Re-Reckoning version. I might take it for a spin, but I have to admit that the gameplay trailer just doesnt look that great. Not much of a bump in quality. Oh well. Its a fun action-RPG thats worth checking out.

Hey, speaking of remasters, one of my favorite first-person-shooters is coming to modern consoles. Crysis isnt a very big gameits widely referred to as a glorified tech demobut man what a game. The graphics blew me away back in the day, and honestly theyre still impressive years later.

This one ran into some stumbling blocks when people rightly pointed out that the remaster didnt actually look as good as the original in some ways, and the game was delayed (a bit) to improve the quality. The latest trailer has me hopeful that the remaster will be worth the wait.

The Serious Sam games are all about big explosions, tons of enemies, larger-than-life guns and battles and Serious Sam 4 looks like its no exception. Its also a prequel to the other games, so thats fun. I love me some prequels.

In the most recent trailer, we see Sam in a mech taking on hordes of baddies. Looks like good escapist fun to me.

One of the games Im looking forward to in September the most is the remake of Mafia, a semi-open world mobster game that first released in 2002.

Ive actually previewed the gameyou can read my preview right hereand loved almost every minute of it except for the race track level which I recorded and made a video of (below). Other than that level, however, its just a fantastic story-driven game set in a fictional prohibition-era American city. Mobsters, car chases, romance, gun fightsits the whole package. I cant wait to play the whole thing.

Okay, to be fair I have no idea if this game will be good or bad, whether its a quick-and-dirty licensing effort of a popular Netflix TV show or a labor of love. But I really love Trollhunters and I really want this game to be good if only because I think it would be a cool platformer for my ten-year-old to play.

And the show(s) is so great. Watch it if you havent already.

There is already a very good, very capable VR Walking Dead game out there. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is an excellent game, even for someone like me who isnt thrilled by VR in general.

So Im not sure that we need Onslaught but if its even close to as high quality as Saints & Sinners Ill be happy. Zombies and VR go together like peanut butter and jelly.

This one is more directly tied to the TV show than Saints & Sinners, with characters like Daryl and Michonne. And yeah, it doesnt look as good judging by the trailer. Cest la vie.

Im still going to refer to this game as Divinity Original Sin Baldurs Gate Edition simply because Larian has left its mark so plainly on the game it almost feels more like Divinity than D&D. And thats fineat least now that theyve changed the tense!

When the game was first announced the narrator and dialogue choices were all in past tense, which just isnt how you roleplay. I like my novels to be in past tense (sorry Hunger Games) but when Im playing an RPG I dont want to describe my past actions I want to say what Im going to do right now.

Larian listened to the community (and to yours truly) and re-wrote all of it. Bravo!

Now we just need a new Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance game with couch co-op and the world will beif not okaystill somewhat better than before.

Here are all (well, okay, most) of the games releasing in September 2020:

Thats all folks! What games are you looking forward to most in September? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook.
