Bayonne is the location of a feature-lenth horror film by three local filmmakers

Hudson County has become a scarier place.

A group of local filmmakers chose the county to film their feature-length horror movie, "The Death of April," with most of the filming done in Bayonne.

Three local filmmakers writer, director, and Jersey City native Ruben Rodriguez; producer, creative director, and Bayonne native Brit Godish; and producer and Jersey City native Cesar Orellana are the founders of Mojo Creative Group, the production company behind the film.

"This film is my dream project," said Rodriguez. "Together we were able to combine our resources and finally make a feature film."

Rodriguez wouldn't reveal much about the film he wrote, only saying it is a found footage-style horror film, meaning it looks like it was shot using a camcorder.

"I've had the idea for a long time," said Rodriguez, who lives in Jersey City. "The idea was to make a movie like a YouTube journal where something would happen to the person making the journal."

Godish, who last year moved to Princeton, said they tried to capitalize on the current popularity of the film genre.

"There's been a swell in the popularity of found footage films over the last few years," Godish said, "so we looked for a way to apply those techniques to the idea we had for a film."

For all three, "The Death of April" is the culmination of a lifelong dream. All three got involved in filmmaking at an early age and studied filmmaking in college, meeting at New Jersey City University.

Rodriguez, who graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, enrolled in classes at NJCU, where Godish and Orellana, a West New York resident, were students. Rodriguez said he enrolled to access the school's equipment and to be able to shoot on the grounds of the university.
