The 50 Scariest Movies of All Time – Reader’s Digest

The Exorcist

Released: 1973

Rated: R

Director: William Friedkin

Theres a reason this horror classic is one of the scariest movies of all time. The Exorcist is the story of a possessed 12-year-old girl and the two priests who try to save her by performing an exorcism.

Why its scary: The concept of possession is terrifying in itself. But a child being possessed? That adds an extra layer of terror to the story. Combined with an unnerving atmosphere fueled by the unknown and notable special effects of the time (seen in the infamous head-spinning scene), The Exorcist delivers a frightening experience you wont forget. It was a smash hit and continues to be talked about to this day.If you need a break from being scared, watch one of these funny movies to get the laughs going.

This is another film based on an unnerving Stephen King novel (which is considered one of the best horror books ever written). The Shining is the story of a writer, Jack Torrance, who moves his family to a secluded hotel to oversee it for the winter. Soon, Jacks young son starts seeing disturbing premonitions, and Jack himself becomes influenced by malevolent forces within the hotel of horrors.

Why its scary: Seeing these terrifying premonitions and visions in the hotel is enough to make The Shining scary. Seeing Jacks descent into madness, though, adds an extra (and very real) layer of horror. Jack Nicholsons performance is jarring, eerie, and plain terrifying. Plus, Stanley Kubricks distinct style of directing pulls it all together, tied with a creepy bow.

Director: Ari Aster

Hereditary is easily one of the scariest movies to come out in recent years. Its about a family rocked to its core following a series of tragedies. As they grieve, they experience disturbing forces that soon lead them to a frightening fate.

Why its scary: While some aspects of the film qualify it as a sad movie, theres no mistaking the unnerving feeling that arises right from the start of Hereditary. You know somethings off but you cant put your finger on what exactly it is. That feeling stays with you up until the last few minutes of the film. Plus, the theme of grief is portrayed realistically and is prevalent throughout the film, and we see just how much it can impact our lives. Hereditary isnt your typical jump-scare horror film; it gets in your head and makes you question everything.

‘Airplane!’ and ‘Scary Movie’ director rips cancel culture in comedy …

David Zucker has been in the entertainment industry since the early 1970s, directing films like "Airplane!" and films from the "Scary Movie" franchise, but he is currently disappointed with cancel culture infiltrating the film scene.

"Comedy is in trouble, of course," the 75-year-old explained in an interview with PragerU.

Known for his spoofs and parodies, Zucker says that when he started out in the industry, the threshold for what qualified as offensive was very different.

"The theater served as a laboratory for our humor," Zucker said of trying out material with his writing partner. "We got instant reactions, and we could be as offensive as we liked We went where the laughs were, and we never thought that we were offending anybody. But if were offending people, then we knew we were on the right track."

His hit 1980 film "Airplane!" starring Leslie Nielsen, Robert Hays and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a spoof of the black-and-white film "Zero Hour!"

"When we would do screenings of Airplane! we'd get the question, Could you do "Airplane!" today?" Zucker shared. "And the first thing I could think of is, Sure, just without the jokes.'"

Speaking on the evolution of jokes in film today, Zucker notes, "As time went on, it got to be the 90s and the 2000s, then it did change. I mean we never worried about any of this stuff - with The Naked Guns or even the Scary Movies."

The thing he's talking about - crossing a line.

"My current writing partner, Pat Proft and I, you know, wrote a parody film on James Bond and Mission Impossible. One female executive said, You know, this joke is getting pretty risqu here. It was just a very mild joke about the lead female character, because she had, you know, come up through the police department and through the FBI, said she needed a breast reduction to fit into the Kevlar vest. It was pure oatmeal, so mild. Not one of our funniest things - but this was like too much. And I thought, Gee if this was the criteria for it, were in big trouble.' You know, they're destroying comedy because of nine percent of the people who don't have a sense of humor.

Although he thinks the current state of comedy is in disarray, he thinks it will make a comeback.

"I just think there's a pendulum. The pendulum will swing back. I would like to see comedy filmmakers do comedies without fear. I mean, we always used to do whatever we wanted and then try it out in front of audiences. If something was really offensive, you'd just get a giant sucking sound out of the audience. And that's not good We don't want to make a point, we don't want to try to educate, we just want to make people laugh."

The Worst Horror Movies of All Time – Movie and TV News

(Photo by Paramount Insurge/courtesy Everett Collection)

Were scraping the bottom of the cauldron for this one, freaky folks. Here lies a group of wretched movies with the lowest Tomatometers of all time with a minimum of 20 reviews now rising and shambling into our guide to the worst horror movies ever made.

No movie listed here achieved higher than 9% on the Tomatometer. As you might expect, the list features an inordinate number are remakes, the biggest offenders including The Fog, Jacobs Ladder, Flatliners, and Martyrs. Same goes for sequels, as Jason, Jaws, the living dead, and an American werewolf make their appearances. And then theres movies that will never even get a sniff of a chance for a sequel, like Sandra Bullocks Premonition, the Daniel Craig clunker Dream House, or the eerily and aptly-titled The Disappointments Room.

Nothing but trouble coming up on in the worst, lowest-rated horror movies of all time! Alex Vo

#1

Adjusted Score: 2393%

Critics Consensus: One of the weakest entries in the J-horror remake sweepstakes, One Missed Call is undone by bland performances and shopworn shocks.

#2

Adjusted Score: 2050%

Critics Consensus: Illogical, tension-free, and filled with cut-rate special effects, Jaws: The Revenge is a sorry chapter in a once-proud franchise.

#3

Adjusted Score: 763%

Critics Consensus: No need for a quarantine -- enthusiasm for this inert remake is not contagious.

#4

Adjusted Score: 642%

Critics Consensus: The Disappointments Room lives down to its title with a thrill-free thriller that presumably left its stars filled with regret - and threatens to do the same for audiences.

#5

Critics Consensus: A lazy collection of obsession thriller clichs, Homecoming will leave viewers wishing they'd opted for a lopsided football game and some awkward dancing instead.

#6

Critics Consensus: No consensus yet.

#7

Adjusted Score: 5371%

Critics Consensus: Inept on almost every level, Alone in the Dark may not work as a thriller, but it's good for some head-slapping, incredulous laughter.

#8

Adjusted Score: 2737%

Critics Consensus: The Haunting of Molly Hartley is a rather lifeless horror endeavor, with a pedestrian plot and few scares.

#9

Adjusted Score: 5624%

Critics Consensus: As frustrating as a 404 error, Fear Dot Com is a stylish, incoherent, and often nasty mess with few scares.

#10

Adjusted Score: 4356%

Critics Consensus: A grungy, disjointed, mostly brainless mess of a film, House of the Dead is nonetheless loaded with unintentional laughs.

#11

Adjusted Score: 4607%

Critics Consensus: The Apparition fails to offer anything original, isn't particularly scary, and offers so little in the way of dramatic momentum that it's more likely to put you to sleep than thrill you.

#12

Adjusted Score: 4128%

Critics Consensus: The Darkness clumsily relies on an assortment of genre tropes, leaving only the decidedly non-frightening ghost of superior horror films in its wake.

#13

Adjusted Score: 6326%

Critics Consensus: Bless the Child squanders its talented cast on a plot that's more likely to inspire unintentional laughs than shivers.

#14

Adjusted Score: 8880%

Critics Consensus: A murky thriller with few chills, Godsend features ludicrous dialogue, by-the-numbers plotting, and an excess of cheap shocks.

#15

Adjusted Score: 8719%

Critics Consensus: Flatliners falls flat as a horror movie and fails to improve upon its source material, rendering this reboot dead on arrival.

#16

Adjusted Score: 6013%

Critics Consensus: The Fog is a so-so remake of a so-so movie, lacking scares, suspense or originality.

#17

Adjusted Score: 5388%

Critics Consensus: Yet another predictable variation on the hoary old haunted-house movie, Darkness is an illogical, portentous mess.

#18

Adjusted Score: 4952%

Critics Consensus: Soul Survivors' stock characters and utter lack of suspense gives viewers little reason to attempt deciphering the confusing plot.

#19

Adjusted Score: 4084%

Critics Consensus: The most mind-bending aspect of 6 Souls is Julianne Moore's participation, the overqualified star wasted on a goofy horror premise that generates more guffaws than scares.

#20

Adjusted Score: 4512%

Critics Consensus: Misguided from stem to stern, Mary wastes the talents of an outstanding cast -- and makes a soggy mess of its supernatural horror story.

#21

Adjusted Score: 4288%

Critics Consensus: A needless remake that quickly loses sight of the themes that elevated the original, this is a Jacob's Ladder that leads straight to nowhere.

#22

Adjusted Score: 4056%

Critics Consensus: Oh my god.

#23

Adjusted Score: 4585%

Critics Consensus: Zero brains.

#24

Adjusted Score: 8681%

Critics Consensus: Slowly, steadily, although no one seems to be moving it in that direction, the Ouija planchette points to NO.

#25

Adjusted Score: 8785%

Critics Consensus: The Devil Inside is a cheap, choppy unscary mess, featuring one of the worst endings in recent memory.

#26

Adjusted Score: 12506%

Critics Consensus: While there are some built-in scares, the movie is muddled and unsatisfying.

#27

Adjusted Score: 9600%

Critics Consensus: Dream House is punishingly slow, stuffy, and way too obvious to be scary.

#28

Adjusted Score: 9125%

Critics Consensus: Boring, predictable, and bereft of thrills or chills, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is exactly the kind of rehash that gives horror sequels a bad name.

#29

Adjusted Score: 8326%

Critics Consensus: It's all been done before, and done better.

#30

Adjusted Score: 7819%

Critics Consensus: Markedly inferior to its cult classic predecessor in every way, An American Werewolf in Paris is felled by the silver bullets of clumsy storytelling and chintzy special effects.

#31

Adjusted Score: 14324%

Critics Consensus: Overdosing on flashbacks, and more portentous than profound, the overly obtuse Premonition weakly echoes such twisty classics as Memento, The Sixth Sense, and Groundhog Day.

#32

Adjusted Score: 13013%

Critics Consensus: It may feature such accomplished actors as Hilary Swank and Stephen Rea, but The Reaping also boasts the apropos tagline "What hath God wrought?" It's schlocky, spiritually shallow, and scare-free.

#33

Adjusted Score: 15325%

19 Horror Movie Sequels So Incredibly Bad That They Make The … – GameSpot

Even the best horror movies of all time can be dragged through the dirt by a poor sequel. We all love the original Halloween movie, but by the time it got to the Cult of Thorn, the franchise had obviously lost its way. Freddy Krueger was a menacing killer in A Nightmare on Elm Street, but he eventually evolved into a bad stand-up comedian delivering jokes about using a Nintendo Power Glove while taunting teenagers.

Bad sequels are one of the biggest tropes of the horror genre. It's simple to understand why. After all, horror movies are usually pretty cheap to make. If one is a big office hit, studios want to pump out as many as possible, as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the installments that follow have a hard time living up to the original--even if the original wasn't very good.

We took a trip through horror history to find the 11 absolute worst horror movie sequels of all time. Narrowing it down to 11 was hard, but there is practically nothing to love about these movies. Yet, still, chances are you've seen most of them. Who among us hasn't watched Jason Takes Manhattan or Jaws 3D, if only to laugh at how comically bad it is?

Take a look at the 19 worst horror movie sequels below, then sound off in the comments with the ones you love to hate.

The Walking Dead EP: Potential in Spinoff About Variations of Walkers …

Toward the end of The Walking Deads 11-season run, the AMC drama sharpened its focus on variations of walkers for instance, zombies that could climb or had enough sense memory left in their rotting brains to pick up and use crude weapons.

And although showrunner Angela Kang is quick to tell TVLine that I cant really get into specifics about any possible spinoff conversations, she does allow that one of the things that wed wanted to explore in this mothership version of The Walking Dead is the variation of walkers.

One of them is the lurkers that weve seen, she adds. You can even argue that there are certain rules, like with the way Michonnes pets operate, for example. This is a variant of the walkers that we saw way back walkers that could climb and pick things up and [so on].

In the final stretch of episodes, Kang & Co. ratcheted up the threat that the variations posed and perhaps gave yet another tease of what may be yet to come in the franchise. We wanted to see what happens when you put [the variations] in a herd, she says. Were definitely leaving a door open for things for people who also watched World Beyond. There was a little something at the end of that series that hinted that maybe things dont develop the same in every single place.

I think thats all I can say without getting in trouble from the universe, she continues with a laugh. Its more of a question for Scott Gimple, the franchises chief content officer.

What do you think? No way can we have seen the last of the fast-reanimating, smarter walkers, right?
