Adapted from a story by Nikolai Gogol, Viy is considered the first Russian horror film of the Soviet era. Its also one of the greatest films of its type ever made. Today we explore the folk horror of Viy.

Before I started this column, I had seen only three of the films in All the Haunts Be Ours, the folk horror boxed set from Severin. Viy was one of those three the best one. And honestly, if its not the best film in this entire boxed set, then Ive got a truly amazing surprise waiting for me in here somewhere.

If I were going through the movies in this set strictly in the order that it presents them, wed actually be talking about Witchhammer now. Viy and Witchhammer share a disc, though the latter is actually listed first on it, even though it was released in 1970, and Viy came out in 1967. I decided to upend the order a bit in part because this is October, and Viy is a perfect Halloween movie and much better for the season than Witchhammer but also because of the similarities between Viy and our last film.

There are two kinds of people in the world: People who think that Viy is brilliant when its being spooky and boring the rest of the time, and those who recognize that it is a great pastoral comedy that also happens to be one of the best spooky movies ever made. (If there is a third kind of person, one who fails to recognize Viys genius in either sphere, I dont want to meet them.)

The last 20 minutes or so of this brief film, especially, are legendary. Almost anyone active in horror circles has seen them, or at least seen shots from them. And they remain rightly iconic, losing none of their magic in the more than half-century that separates them from us. In fact, though it remains shamefully underseen, Viy itself is a legendary picture, adapted from equally legendary source material.

While we may not recognize it as readily as we do tales like Dracula or Frankenstein, Viy centers around one of the classic horror plots: the night with a corpse. In this case, its three nights, as a seminary student is obliged to say prayers over the body of a girl, even though he knows that shes a witch, and each night she rises to torment him.

The scenes of prayer and haunting are phenomenal, the films stylistic centerpieces, and theyre justly famous. But the scenes that break them up are just as important. Comedic scenes, that show the seminarian drinking and dancing, singing and moping and trying to escape his unpleasant situation. In fact, were probably more than halfway through the film before the first of the three nights of prayer takes place.

If the spooky scenes are the heart of the film, then these moments of pastoral comedy are its flesh and blood. And, at least for my money, they work like gangbusters, making the film warm and funny and human and strange even when nothing supernatural is happening. Also, if you like shots of farm animals, this is your picture. Just as the strength of Leptirica was its depiction of the life of its people, Viy similarly loves the people its story is about.

Viy is a colossal creation of the imagination of simple folk, states a quote, purportedly from Gogol himself, which opens the film. And thats also a pretty good explanation of what makes Viy not only so brilliant but also so integral to the history of folk horror more so than most others, it feels like a real folk tale, something that comes from the people it concerns, rather than an outsiders view.

Gogol even makes some efforts to establish the storys folkloric bonafides in an authors note, although most sources believe that at least the character of Viy itself, which he claims is the name given to the chief of the gnomes, is in fact Gogols own creation. Whether the story is truly a folktale told to Gogol or something that he made up whole cloth, however, he has the same gift that American author Manly Wade Wellman would later demonstrate: the ability to weave a story that feels like a genuine folktale, whether it is or not.

And the movie retains that feeling, which is perhaps part of why the story has been told and retold as many times as it has. Earlier I mentioned stories like Dracula and Frankenstein, and Viy has nearly as many cinematic adaptations as those do. Indeed, this isnt even the first one. It was first adapted into a lost 1909 silent film by Vasily Goncharov, while later versions were released in 1990, 1996, 2014, and more. And those are just the official adaptations. Mario Bavas Black Sunday has also been considered a loose retelling of the tale.

Each take is often dramatically different, with only that central three nights with a corpse premise to hold them together, just as retellings of Dracula are all over the map with only rich guy is a vampire in common. But, while I havent seen anywhere near all of them, the 1967 version is almost certainly the best, and its the scenes of warm humanity, as much as the blue-painted fiends, that make it so.

Besides his work as Monster Ambassador here at Signal Horizon, Orrin Grey is the author of several books about monsters, ghosts, and sometimes the ghosts of monsters, and a film writer with bylines at Unwinnable and others. His stories have appeared in dozens of anthologies, including Ellen DatlowsBest Horror of the Year and he is the author of two collections of essays on vintage horror film.

With the spooky season fast approaching, many people are ready to watch horror movies and get into the fall spirit. While there are plenty of horror movie genres to choose from, there are certainly a few standouts. From creepy classics to cheesy horror, any of these eight movies (and a few new terrors) are sure to cause some entertaining frights.

No horror movie marathon would be complete without the film that started the slasher-film frenzy. Halloween is the 1978 classic by John Carpenter who brought the infamous character Michael Myers to life. While there were many sequels, the original story revolves around Myers terrorizing and brutalizing the fictional suburban town of Haddonfield, Illinois. The film was also Jamie Lee Curtis acting debut and would eventually help solidify her status as a renowned actress. Even just a few seconds of the iconic Halloween theme music and itll feel like the scariest season again.

Scream is the kind of film you can watch over and over and still appreciate its twists and humor. The plot follows Sidney Prescott, a teenage girl quickly targeted by the Ghostface killer terrorizing her town. The recognizable Ghostface mask appears in Halloween stores yearly, and with good reason. Scream is aware of the common cliches of teen horror movies, making the film a blend of humor and scares that curves expectations. The first film, by popular horror director Wes Craven, spawned an entire franchise, so if you like the film you have plenty left to enjoy.

From the film production powerhouse A24, Hereditary is so much more than a jump-scare movie. The plot centers around a family dealing with unimaginable loss. Its a story about grieving and confronting what our family passes down to us. While the movie centers around family, it is not a heartfelt tale but rather something disturbing and truly unsettling. Director Ari Aster created an artful film that has changed the landscape of contemporary horror. With stunning acting, arresting monologues and shocking visuals, Hereditary is the kind of movie that stays in your mind for years to come. This film has a fair amount of gore and should be watched with caution.

The horror genre wouldnt be the same without the master of scary, Stephen King. One of his most popular books, IT, has traumatized fans with the killer clown character Pennywise for decades. While the original short television series from 1990 still holds up today, the 2017 remake of It is a must-see. A group of childhood friends called the Losers Club team up to protect the town of Derry, Maine, from the shapeshifting, villainous Pennywise. The kids take on a daunting job and face some terrifying situations, but the film manages to balance it with comedic moments and a strong friendship. With excellent performances from Finn Wolfhard, Bill Skarsgrd, Sophia Lillis and more, theres even a Chapter 2 if you cant get enough of the Losers Club.

If youre looking for a creepy premise that wont scare you too much, the 1984 classic Gremlins is the perfect pick. Rated PG, the movie follows a family man who buys a small, furry creature called a mogwai as a Christmas present for his son. The cute pet quickly turns evil after its very important care instructions are ignored. With a lighter rating, this movie is more of a family-friendly Halloween classic, and a story with unforgettable moments and great plot. It may have you looking at your furry friends a little differently, though.

The Taking of Deborah Logan is not for the faint of heart. While found-footage movies are very popular in the horror genre, this 2014 film uses the documentary style to the fullest. The plot follows a documentary crew filming an elderly woman who is suffering from Alzheimers disease, though supernatural forces slowly reveal terrifying truths. The movie has some seriously frightening images, with a script that will shake you to the core. The Taking of Deborah Logan is a great pick for unafraid viewers looking for a great possession movie. You may want to keep a light on while you watch this one.

Dracula is an infamous monster, easily the most recognizable bloodsucking vampire across all media. With so many adaptations, interpretations and mentions of the long-standing character, it can be refreshing to view the original renditions. The 1931 Dracula remains one of the top movies in horror, telling of the vampires kills across London in stunning black and white. With heavy influences from the original Bram Stoker novel, the Dracula movie tells a timeless tale with rich visuals. Many streaming platforms carry the 1931 version, and its a great start for a Dracula-themed movie marathon.

Another story based off the work of Stephen King, The Shining is hailed as one of the greatest films in cinema, horror or otherwise. The film directed by Stanley Kubrick follows the Torrance family after they move into the large (and extremely haunted) Overlook hotel in Colorado. As father Jack Torrance carries out his duties as the hotels caretaker, strange and unexplainable occurrences begin to show what hides in the history of the hotel. While the two and a half hour run time can seem a bit daunting, the rigorous visuals and strong storywriting make The Shining a piece of art everyone should watch at least once.

Whether youre a horror movie fanatic or you simply want to watch a film or two to get into the spooky mood, there are plenty of alluring movies to choose from. With varying sub-genres and haunting plot lines, horror has much to offer. Hopefully one of these eight choices can start your movie-watching off on the right frightening foot. Happy watching!

Cinema may have gifted us at least one fantastic haunted house in space movie we salute you, Alien but heading away from Earth isnt usually a good sign for horror films.

Its a running joke in Hollywood that there comes a time in every long-running franchise when inspiration weakens along with gravity, and the story heads to space. Were old enough to remember when several Fast & Furious movies teased a space trip before Furious 9.

The James Bond series kept it cool it waited until its eleventh film to take the suave superspy off-world. That flexible franchise can thank its 60-year life on reading cinema trends, and in the wake of Star Wars, 1979s Moonraker had little choice but to equip U.S. soldiers with space lasers.

Action franchises like Bond and Furious have been joined by Ice Age, Jumanji, and even Emanuelle on intergalactic adventures. The parody of heading off-world has been there since Airplane 2: The Sequel blasted towards the sun, and horror has undoubtedly handled the idea the worst. While you can see the appeal of a space in action series eager to outdo itself with every installment, horror tends to head to space as its core principles dissolve. Its hard to be scary in the infinite. Horrors at a double disadvantage as budgets are generally low and declining. That certainly hasnt helped their reputation.

Here are five horror franchises that went off-world, not that it helped them achieve stellar reviews.

It may be rated PG-13, but horror clings to the adorable carnivorous fur balls The Critters wherever they go. Considering the hairy threats are alien, its tough to include them, but the first three movies had been reliably terrestrial. Critters 4 may have been filmed back-to-back with part three, but it darkened the tone as it changed its location.

Set in 2045, the Critters stage a comeback on a space station with a crew including Angela Bassett and horror icon Brad Dourif. Critters 4 did reasonably well shifting the franchise to a different setting and introducing pretty good special effects, but that was probably the carnivores downfall. It wasnt quite adolescent enough, and the Critters movie career screeched to a halt.

The Critters franchise wouldnt bite onto anything until 2019 with a feature reboot, along with a web series that was released on Shudderthat same year.

Hellraiser: Bloodline is a disappointing addition to this list. Its not to blame for the string of adapted spec scripts that made up the Hellraiser movies that followed, but coming after the relatively tight, if unraveling trilogy that preceded it, Hellraisder: Bloodlines production troubles sunk Pinhead and his cenobites ambitions.

The idea couldnt be faulted, apart from maybe, the ability to film it. Hellraiser: Bloodline sets out to tell the history of the famous puzzle box at the heart of the franchise, the Lament Configuration. At the end of three timelines, Pinhead (Doug Bradley) and humanity would meet for the final time aboard a space station in 2127, thanks to a plan centuries in the making. There are some compelling moments in the future, but the cenobites arent made for space, and other movies have captured Hell in a vacuum better.

Hellraiser: Bloodline was released with director and special effects maestro Kevin Yagher adopting the infamous pseudonym Alan Smithee. It also marked the last involvement of the sagas creator Clive Barker for 30 years. The Hellraiser franchise stuck to video releases with lead cenobite Pinhead reduced to bit parts in the immediate sequels.

Theres something about fourth installments. Dark comedy slasher Leprechaun 4: In Space took the titular Leprechaun off Earth in an action-packed, ridiculous adventure. Set at the end of the 21st century on a distant planet, the Leprechauns plans to marry his way to power are disrupted when a group of marines rudely kill him.

You cant keep a good Leprechaun down, and the rest of the movie follows the diminutive supernatural killer taking down the military and their crazed cyborg commander. Leprechaun 4: In Space finds time for pastiches of other space movies and features one of the most extraordinary reanimations in slasher movie history (you have been warned!). Reviews inexplicably branded the franchises leap into space as desperate.

The Leprechaun would return to Earth in Leprechaun 5: In the Hood.

With its tenth outing, the Friday the 13th franchise achieved the ultimate space jump that was awful and brilliant in equal measure. While the humans of the 25th century may not behave very differently from the counselors Jason was used to stalking, Jason X doesnt skimp on imagination in a futuristic environment. One of his more gratuitous kills makes brilliant use of liquid nitrogen, which you dont usually find around a lake. Jason also suffers a rather conclusive death before, of course, hes rebuilt into an even more hulking cyborg.

Jason X packs a lot in, including a colossal space crash which indirectly gives Jason the most kills of any slasher, and a trap involving a holographic recreation of Camp Crystal Lake. Jason would next take on fellow horror icon Freddy Kruger in 2003s Freddy vs. Jason, before he went solo again in a 2009 reboot.

Sneaking onto this list because of its audacious title, Dracula 3000 wasnt a sequel to the gothic and humid horror of Dracula 2000 that starred Gerard Butler, but it does holds a ridiculous place in one of the largest horror franchises of all time: the Dracula movie.

Dracula 3000 doesnt necessarily feature the titular vampire, but rather Count Orlock (Langley Kirkwood), a reference to the classic horror movie Nosferatu. Awakened in deep space, the movie replays the fights of 19th-century earth with descendants, including Casper Van Diens Captain Abraham Van Helsing and Alexandra Kamps Mina Murry. Sadly, its difficult to find a good review.

Dracula has enjoyed a far more profitable time on 21st-century television, including Showtimes Penny Dreadful and the BBCs Dracula.

Since the publication of Bram Stokers Dracula in 1897, vampires have been a nearly constant object of pop-cultural fascination, with each creator putting their own stamp on thecondition? Affliction? Lifestyle? Vampires can be monstrous, as in The Strain. They can be sexy, as in True Blood, Twilight, The Vampire Diaries. They can be funny, as in What We Do in the Shadows. They can even be cute, as in Monster High, a toy line/upcoming live-action kids movie on Nickelodeon and Paramount+. AMCs Interview With the Vampire series, which premieres October 2, reminds us of what many romantic versions of vampire life decorously keep off-screen: vampires can be psychopaths.

Adapted by Rolin Jones (HBOs Perry Mason) from Anne Rices book series, the show revolves around titular vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson). In 1973, we are told, he met up with journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) to tell his story. Nearly 50 years later, Molloywhos entered the online-master-class phase of his writing careerreceives a surprise delivery of the original cassette tapes: Louis still lives (or lives), and wants to revisit their collaboration. Molloy travels to Louiss lavish Dubai apartment to interview him again, and learns that since the last time they spoke, Louiss opinion of his sire, Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid), have evolved.

Whereas the book (and the 1994 movie based on it) place Lestat and Louiss first meeting in 1791, the show introduces us to still-human Louis in 1910. The setting remains New Orleans, though this Louis is no longer a widower whose wife and child did not survive labor (as in the movie, book Louis is mourning the death of his brother); nor is he a plantation owner with dozens of enslaved laborers; nor is he white. The Louis of the show is a Black Creole red-light proprietor who operates several sporting houses in Storyville, the citys red-light district. One night, a recently arrived Lestat sees Louis capably (and violently) defending his business interests in the street and, as he later tells Louis, is moved to buy a town house in the French Quarter to remain near him. Louis gets competitive when Lestat outbids him for the sex worker Louis visits to repress his latencies, but soon understands that Lestat is most interested in seducing Louis. A threesome turns into a twosome. Lestat feeds on Louis, and soon, following a crisis in Louiss family, Lestat makes the offer Louis cant resist: I can swap this life of shameswap it out for a dark gift and a power you cant begin to imagine.

In the run-up to the 1994 movies release, Rice was vocal in her opposition to the casting of Tom Cruise as her Brat Prince Lestat (though she came around once she saw him in the role). But while a contemporaneous Cruise profile in Vanity Fair described the character as bitchy and bisexualyou know, a 2022 viewer may see the former more than the latter in Cruises performance. There is plenty of queer subtext in the film, but thats as far as it goes; the only transgressive kiss, not counting all the ones involving necks and fangs, comes when tween vampire Claudia (Kirsten Dunst, 11 at the time of filming and not okay with it) bestows one on her father, Louis (Brad Pitt). But the new show is not coy about the nature of Louis and Lestats relationship: After Lestat has turned his lover, he invites Louis to share his coffin, smirking, Its okay. You can be on top.

Vampirism has metaphorically represented now-waning ideas of queernessa forbidden desire to which one ecstatically surrenders, ending up outside societys bounds as a consequence. Making Lestat and Louiss sex life an unambiguous part of this story disentangles Louiss horror at his thirsts collateral damage from the shame other versions of the character have evinced about sexual interests only (broadly) hinted at. Between hunts, Louis and Lestat settle into domesticity and have the same disputes all couples do. How do you balance the demands of ones family of origin with the needs of ones chosen family? How do you manage when one partner adopts a new diet (as when Louis decides hes no longer going to take human life, and will survive by draining animals), and the other feels judged (jk, Lestat doesnt care what Louis thinks of his murders)? Whens the right time to have a child, and how should you raise her? How often is too often to attend the opera?

Months before the movie came out, describing her (then) objection to Cruises casting, Rice told Movielines Martha Frankel that Lestat should be an overpowering personvery blond, very tall, very athletic, very full. Rice did not live to see Sam Reids performance, which aligns precisely with her brief; we eventually see nearly all of Reid and he is so very athletic, very full that one shirtless shot made me gasp aloud. (He also apparently grew out his strawberry blond hair for the role, and in an era when bad TV wigs are an urgent topic of concern, we simply must applaud the commitment.) Lestat is an aesthete, a womanizer, a charming dinner guest, a card sharpwhatever he needs to be to fulfill his ultimate goal as a serial murderer. Not since Mads Mikkelsens Hannibal Lecter has a fictional character killed with such purpose and artistry.

Jacob Anderson has the harder job: As Louis, the note he most often has to play is tortured anguish. This is especially true after he rescues Claudia (Bailey Bass) from a firetoo late for her to have escaped injury, so Lestat saves her life by siring her, and enmeshing Louis more fully into their chosen family in the process. (It may not shock you to learn that a girl whose mind keeps maturing while her body stays 14 turns out to be kind of a handful.) Present-day Louis is less active but shows more emotional depth, having moved, over a century, through his resentment against Lestat and to his desire for truth and reconciliation. This Louis has the unhurried manner of someone who has felt every one of his years, which is why, as his primary scene partner, Bogosians Molloy can grate. Were told that Molloy has his own regrets and urgency: an addict now long in recovery, hes being treated for Parkinsons disease; even getting on a plane during the COVID-19 pandemic is a risk in his condition. The choice has been made, I guess, to make Molloy seem extra-modern opposite a character who came of age in a different century, another world, but his arch, sarcastic dialogue feels like it belongs to a different show. Despite the series title, though, the interview scenes of Interview With the Vampire comprise comparatively little of its content; Sam Reids Lestat, feasting on every one of his scenes, is what makes the show unmissable.

Vampires are perhaps the most iconic monsters lurking in the night. Luckily, with that level of fame, the average person has a pretty good idea of what to do if they ever find themselves facing off against a bloodsucker. A stake through the heart will kill them. Silver is bad, too. A crucifix is a good defense against a vampire except for when it isnt. Sunlight will burn a vampire unless it just makes them sparkle?

Wait a second

Yes, it turns out that not all vampires in pop culture operate by the same rules. SYFYs new series Reginald the Vampire, starring Spider-Man: Now Way Homes Jacob Batalon, is the latest vampire title to grace the screen. Luckily, Reginalds vampire rules are, for the most part, pretty standard. (Although Reginalds vampires, except for the title character, are pretty snobby!)

Theres a baseline of vampire rules that well call the Standard Vampire or rather, standard pop-culture vampire, as common understanding of what a vampire is draws more from Dracula than the folkloric monster. Bram Stokers 1987 novel Dracula is the basis for the archetypal vampire, though the now-100-year-old silent film Nosferatu, an unauthorized adaptation of Stokers work, deserves some credit too. Its because of Nosferatu that most pop-culture vampires have a deadly aversion to sunlight. In the original Dracula, the count merely avoided daylight and was, if anything, slightly weakened by it. This was the case in folklore, too.

Other classic vampire rules can be seen in Dracula. Vampires drink blood. Vampires can turn other people into vampires. Vampires are immortal. Vampires sleep in coffins. Vampires can turn into bats. Vampires are hypnotic. Vampires dont have reflections in mirrors. And, vampires, for all their supernatural abilities, have a number of weaknesses, too.

In addition to sunlight, the average vampire can be killed (or at least thwarted) by a stake through the heart, decapitation, fire, silver, garlic, the sight of a crucifix, holy water, and running water.

Those are the standard vampiric traits that you can assume most pop culture vampires will have. Maybe swap out a weakness or two vampires in Blade dont care about crucifixes, for example but those are the general rules. However, there are some vampires that operate by totally different rules. Here are a few of the standouts.

Vampires in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight books and the film adaptations dont have to worry about pretty much any of the classic vampire weaknesses. Crosses, garlic, and silver all dont do anything to them, nor does sunlight. Rather than harm a Twilight vampire, sunlight just makes them sparkle, so they avoid the sun so that theyre less conspicuous rather than to avoid physical harm. Twilight vampires have some other unique attributes, too. They have 25 chromosomes compared to a normal humans 23, and while they can subsist on animal blood, only human blood will prevent their eyes from changing from their normal color to a golden yellow hue.

Vampires in the land of Ooo can be quite varied in power and appearance (the Vampire King is a lion who became a vampire, for instance, and different vampire nobles have their own unique power), but Marceline the Vampire Queen exhibits some nifty traits. While shes weak to sunlight and staking, it turns out that she doesnt need to drink blood she just eats the color red and can drain it from whatever she sinks her fangs into. She can also hover and transform into a gnarly bat-monster, though the latter ability might have something to do with the fact that she was already half demon before she became a vampire.

Guillermo del Toros horror series featured an especially gross and upsetting spin on vampires that emphasized the viral nature of the monster. While a Strain vampire has some traditional traits like sunlight aversion and a weakness to silver, in the series vampirism is spread by parasitic worms that transform their host, giving them a long, blood-sucking tongue appendage and causing their hair and, uh, genitals to fall off.

Morbius, the Living Vampire is not like other vampires because Morbius is a living vampire. Its right there in the name. As seen in the recent (critically panned) movie, Michael Morbius becomes a vampire not through supernatural means but through science when he experiments with vampire bat DNA. As a result, while he has an insatiable hunger for blood, he doesnt have any other traditional vampire weaknesses. He also got improved health and some impressive abs out of the deal. Morbius was even weirder in his appearances in Spider-Man: The Animated Series in the 90s. The networks censors wouldnt allow for any neck-biting or even mention of the word blood, so instead Morbius sucked plasma from victims via some gross-looking suckers on his hands.

John Carpenters titular vampires are, more or less, your average vampire. Garlic, silver, sunlight the usual itll kill them. However, these vampires also have a hierarchy, something thats not unheard of in vampire media. Whats cool is that Jan Valek, the original vampire, is immune to garlic and silver, and he can only be killed by the very cross that he was crucified on. (Hes still not a fan of sunlight, but if hed succeeded in his plan to perform his own exorcism, that weakness would have gone away, too.)

The vampire bunny from the delightful childrens book series isnt evil, nor does he drink blood. Instead, the rabbit with some Dracula-like fur patterns sucks the vegetable juice out of his food with his cute little fangs. We love him.

If The Count has ever sucked somebodys blood, Sesame Street hasnt shown it. For understandable reasons, the beloved childrens show hasnt devoted too much time to explaining how The Count feasts or what instruments a Muppet vampire-hunter would need to kill him, but he does, perhaps, exhibit one weakness that vampires have in certain folklore. According to some legends, vampires have an urge to count things, meaning that if you were being chased by one, you could spill a bag of rice, buying yourself time as the blood-sucker stopped to count every single last grain. Thats pretty much The Counts whole deal.

Discover how vampires work on Reginald the Vampire when the series premieres on Oct. 5 at 10 p.m. ET, right after the Season 2 premiere of SYFY and USA Networks Chucky.

Fans will get a deeper dive into World of Darkness with the debut of New York by Night's second season. This week, World of Darkness will debut the second season of New York by Night, a Vampire: The Masquerade actual play series focused on two coteries of vampires living in New York City. While the first season focused on a group of vampires rebelling against the status quo, the second season focuses on the group of vampires trying to maintain the "Masquerade" the status quo of vampires living in secret amongst mortals. The new season of New York by Nightwill feature Noura Ibrahim, Michelle Nguyen Bradley, Cynthia Marie, and Xander Jeanneret as members of the Camarilla Court. With Jason Carl as the Storyteller, the four players are on a collision course with the rival coterie, although they might not know it at the outset of the season.

Actual play shows are a popular form of web entertainment, although they are dominated by Dungeons & Dragons shows. But while Dungeons & Dragons is focused mostly on external conflict between an adventuring party and enemy creatures, much of the drama in a Vampire: The Masquerade series is focused on the coterie dynamics. "Honestly, it's probably an even split," said cast member Michelle Nguyen Bradley during an web interview when asked about the balance between internal and external conflict. "But it might lean towards the dramatic. In the structure of the game, your coterie is a group of cool kindred friends that maybe aren't friends. And your interactions with them are defined by the bigger circle of whatever group you're part of... But within those groupings, you have so much struggle for power because these little Kindred live forever and that makes things very hard for them when they want to move up in the world because no one's dying to make room for the new people. In our season, it's 75% internal conflicts and character to character personality conflicts and maybe 25% action."

Bradley noted that she hadn't played Vampire: The Masquerade before 2020, but she hadn't found it too difficult to dive into the deep lore that fuels the core of the game. "I love the system," Bradley said. "I thought it was really so different than anything else I had played. Playing a dramatic RPG that is steeped in you losing your humanity as opposed to a game that's like an adventure where you fight a monster and you're going to save people. Vampire: The Masquerade is about trying to save yourself if you want to, and it's so different. It really scratches that dramatic itch in the back of my brain as an actor, that's like, 'Yes, we are going to be really in our feelings all the time, constantly having an existential crisis, but it's acting, so it's not real.'"

New York by Night also benefits from being set within one of the largest cities of the world, a place filled with recognizable sites and its own personality. But the geography of the city itself also comes into play. ""Usually, these settings are called [City Name] by Night because controlling territory is so important in the game," Bradley said. "Wherever you eat, that's already controlled by somebody. If you find a nice little spot to feed, someone owns that territory and you have to figure out who that is." In New York by Night, the Camarilla control Manhattan, while the Camarilla control the Bronx. When characters sneak into another faction's territory, it creates problems.

Even beyond that, New York adds a special flavor to the series. "The fifth character on the show is New York," Bradley said. "Anything about where an important building or landmark is becomes part of the story." Not only do these landmarks provide important context to traveling and territorial control, the mythology actually weaves its way into the city itself. Bradley mentioned one abandoned island in New York City that became the home of a coterie of vampires, because of course an old, creepy abandoned building would be home to a group of vampires. "It's fun to take these historical places in these cities and make them part of your lore," Bradley said.

When asked for a final pitch to watch New York by Night, Bradley noted that the series had it all. "Do you want to see some hot vampires?" Bradley said with a laugh. "Get into trouble with their sires and the Anarchs? And then do you want to see people cry on camera a lot because some really crazy stuff that happens? Then this is the show for you. Vampire: The Masquerade. We're vampires, we're real sad about it sometimes."

You can check out New York by Night on World of Darkness's Twitch channel. The series premieres tonight at 7 PM PT athttps://twitch.tv/worldofdarkness.

Hello! For #Geektoberfest Im writing a bunch of very important articles on Spoopy and Halloweenie themed subjects. First up, vampires.

Vampires have been big ever since the runaway success of Dracula Daily but also probably before then? I dont know, Im not researching this thing.

So without any ado, here are my thoughts on some random vampires.

What it must have felt like to be Norman Stiles, walking into the Childrens Television Workshop one day with a character that seemed to merely be a play on words (Count Dracula counts, get it?!?) only to have planted an evil seed that would sprout years later into the sudden realization by geeky fans that vampires of legend do count, obsessively. That little fun fact wasnt really touched on a lot by Hammer Horror films, but man, Sesame Street was committed to educating children about the realities of life. Mr. Hoopers undeath aside.

Some PR Director at General Mills, probably: This monster movie thing is gangbusters! We need to get in on this racket! Someone design me a bunch of cereal that can use movie monsters as mascots, but dont pay anyone anything!

Their Assistant: Well, we have all this chocolate, strawberry, blueberry, and other cereal lying around. We can just shape the chalky little marshmallows into anything and map them to horror stuff.

PR Director: Yes yes, fine. Make the blueberry bile, the strawberry blood, and the chocolate human excrement. Did you know you soil yourself when you die? Most people dont know that.

Assistant: (beat) Maybe we should pay someone something?

Anyways, its a fine cereal I guess.

Basically every image of Count Duckula on the internet has him striking this you remember me??! pose and its alarming.

Why are you so down on yourself, Duckula? Is it because you are very British? Is it because production company Thames isnt a household name? Is it because your housekeeper mixed up ketchup and blood in the ritual that was used to resurrect you so you came back as a vegetarian which is really a lot of extra baggage to add to a character thats already an anthropomorphic duck vampire? Was it the hair?

Probably the hair.

I have once again done zero research for this article, but I assume we can look forward to a gritty reboot next year from Netflix.

Frank will be writing more microblogs throughout the month of October leading up to thw only holiday that matters, Halloween!

LOS ANGELES (AP) Whats fall got to do with the fall TV season? Summer had yet to roll up its Labor Day beach blanket when two major series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon arrived.

While the broadcast pattern of a strict September-to-May season has been undermined by streaming and cable efforts to keep audiences in thrall year-round, there remains a certain industry loyalty to tradition and the expectation that people watch more TV when days grow shorter and colder.

That means viewers still have new shows to sample and favorites to rediscover, including some that have been gone too long. (OK, The Crown is worth the two-year wait.). To help sort through the clutter, heres a curated list of series that have proven their entertainment value or show promise.

THE CROWN

Season five tackles the British royal familys Roaring 90s, when Prince Charles and Princess Dianas ill-fated marriage boiled over into bitter public recriminations. The real-life reign of Queen Elizabeth II ended with her death at age 96 in September, but her character (newcomer Imelda Staunton) remains the dramas steady center. Respect also is due to the power behind the TV throne, The Crown creator Peter Morgan, who compellingly weaves together history (with some storytelling adjustments) and the imagined nuances of life behind palace doors. Helen Mirren, who won a best actress Oscar for 2006s The Queen, written by Morgan, calls him a fearless writer with a real sense of the importance of research holding the whole thing up. Debuts Nov. 9 on Netflix.

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE

Vampires are having their moment in the sun apologies, moon. Joining Vampire Academy and What We Do in the Shadows is the O.G. of modern blood-sucker dramas, Interview with the Vampire. Based on the Anne Rice novel adapted for the Tom Cruise-Brad Pitt hit 1994 movie, the series stars Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid as Louis and Lestat and Bailey Bass as their teen protege, Claudia. Eric Bogosian plays the titles interviewer, intent on drawing out Louis centuries-long history. Rather than a horror story, creator-producer Rolin Jones says he sees it as a gothic romance, a very excitable, aggressive, toxic, beautiful love story that includes queer sexuality and aesthetics. Its already renewed for season two. Debuts Oct. 2 on AMC and AMC+.

ALASKA DAILY

The journalism maxim of names make news can be applied to TV shows generally and Alaska Daily in particular. It stars two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank (Boys Dont Cry, Million Dollar Baby) and was created by another Oscar winner: Tom McCarthy, co-writer of the fact-based journalism movie Spotlight. In Alaska Daily, Swanks New York investigative reporter moves to Anchorage to rebuild a shredded reputation and finds stories that demand coverage, including the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

FROM SCRATCH

Adapting an autobiography for the screen is a delicate task, but From Scratch was in good hands. Actor Tembi Locke (Never Have I Ever, Eureka), the author of From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily and Finding Home, created and produced the series with her sister Attica Locke, a producer on Little Fires Everywhere. The pair decided that Tembi Lockes story of her marriage to an Italian man, over his mothers resistance to the American interloper, and its aftermath would benefit from fictionalizing the characters. Having that bit of distance gave us great latitude to play, Tembi Locke says. Zoe Saldana stars opposite Eugenio Mastrandrea. Debuts Oct. 21 on Netflix.

ANDOR

Who doesnt love a good origin story, especially one set in the Star Wars galaxy? Andor, which tells the backstory of future rebel hero Cassian Andor, will walk you right into Rogue One in 24 episodes, said series creator-executive producer Tony Gilroy, who was the 2016 movies co-writer. The first dozen episodes that comprise season one will cover a pivotal year for Cassian, with season two bridging the remaining four years to connect to the film. Diego Luna reprises his big-screen role and says he intends to challenge everything you think about Cassian. Streaming now on Disney+.

SHERMANS SHOWCASE

Sherman McDaniels is the fictitious host of the long-running (also fictitious) musical variety series in the mode of Soul Train and Solid Gold. In reality, Shermans Showcase is a sketch show that gives creators, executive producers and stars Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle free reign to satirize any and everything, from funk (music that involves way too many people) to fashion to celebrities, including series co-executive producer John Legend; supermodel Iman as played by Issa Rae, and the questionably over-confident Sherman himself (Salahuddin). For those who loved Morris Day in Purple Rain, Riddle says his guest appearance is a season two highlight. Debuts Oct. 26 on IFC.

THE CALLING

Writer-producer David E. Kelley, whose Emmy-winning track record includes Ally McBeal, Boston Legal and Big Little Lies, is switching it up with a police drama based on Israeli crime writer Dror Mishanis character of inspector Avraham Avi Avraham. In The Calling, Avi is a NYPD detective whom Kelley describes as a deeply mysterious, spiritual and compelling detective unlike any protagonist Ive encountered before. Israeli actor Jeff Wilbusch (Unorthodox) leads the cast that includes Juliana Canfield (Succession) and Karen Robinson (Schitts Creek). Also on board are two Oscar-winners: director Barry Levinson (Rain Man) and composer Hans Zimmer (Dune, The Lion King). Debuts Nov. 10 on Peacock.

While She-Hulk episode 7 didnt deliver the Daredevil cameo fans imagined it would, it did manage to deliver the unexpected by connecting to the MCUs upcoming Blade movie and showing the importance of Werewolf by Night.

Titled Just Jen, this week Jen was forced to take a silent retreat at Emil Blonskys health and wellness center where she was introduced to a group of quirky characters. At first glance, its easy to classify them as Marvels D-list, but it turns out they may serve a purpose that fits into the larger picture Marvel Studios is trying to create. A picture that is tied to a vampire movie, a 1940s horror fest presentation and mutants.

Porcupine, Man-Bull, and El Aguila all have a deep, rich history in the Marvel comics that stretches beyond a cameo planted for laughs, and the introduction of Saracen, the moody goth guy who believes hes a vampire and just might open the floodgates to Eric Brooks aka Blade.

In Marvel Comics, Man-Bull, aka William Taurens, was transformed by his former boss Mr. Kline, after Daredevil stopped him from kidnapping people off the street to be Klines test subjects. El Aguila is a mutant who has been an adversary to both Iron Fist and Power Man. Then theres Porcupine, of which there have been three versions of the classic Ant-Man villain throughout the years. But it was Saracens cameo that raised a lot of eyebrows.

During Jens therapy session with the group, its explained that Saracen thinks hes a vampire. Even though theres no confirmation of his vitals, Saracen is more than willing to suck someones blood. Seems like Jen would have been safer around Saracen than Josh (but thats for another story).

People also collectively lost their minds when Saracen mentions his father. Could Saracen be Blades son? Gasp! No, not all black people lookalike or are related. ButMarvel Studios is known to pivot away from the comics ( Thor: Love and Thunder). For now, Saracen is not Blades son, because in the comics, Blades only known child is his daughter.

Cue Papa Was a Rolling Stone!

First appearing in 1999s Blade: Vampire Hunter #1, Saracen is a mercenary who fights the Punisher but is also one of the first vampires to roam the Earth; belonging to a group of other ancient vampires known as the Ancient, alongside Nosferatu, Verdelet, Maracen, Lamia, and his servant Boy.

In other comic books, Saracen lived in Rome, beneath the Vatican and has an ancient demonic servant, Reaper. Saracen has the same powers and abilities as traditional vampires and loves to casually snack on people while summoning Reaper to do his bidding, something Blade detested, which led to many fights and feuds.

Knowing theres a new Blade with Mahershala Ali on the way (even if its delayed) to the MCU is exciting. A half-hour office comedy is slowly starting to prove itself as Marvel Studios continues to lay the groundwork for Blades appearance from a voice cameo in Eternals to maybe or maybe not Blades son in She-Hulk. This is cinema.

One could argue vampires were always there, lurking in the corner, hidden away in the shadows (or daylight, since Saracen was not affected) where no one had encountered them.

While Saracen might be the first vampire to appear in the MCU, thereby setting up Blades imminent arrival, this technically isnt the first time She-Hulk introduced the idea of vampires.

She-Hulk episode six, titled Just Jen, included Mister Immortal, a Great Lakes Avenger from the comics who dated Baroness Cromwell aka Lily Cromwell from Werewolf by Night. Due to Mr. Immortals healing abilities, its hard to know just how old he is (unless you count the countless women he married or dated), and its possible vampires already exist in the MCUwhich brings us back to Blade as he could similarly operate in an Earth-based realm that is hidden from view.

Baroness Cromwell / Lily Cromwell is a woman of many titles, but in the beginning, she was an innocent person born to Dr. Jacob Cromwell. It was because of her father she was introduced to the world of blood and vampires. Under Lily soon finds herself a vampire under Draculas control, (well keep the events spoiler-free in case Werewolf by Night uses this origin story).

Kevin Feige revealed a featurette for the inaugural Marvel Studios Special Presentation of Werewolf by Night isnt just a random thematic special but will play a larger role in the grand scheme of the MCU. In fact, he notes, going forward, it will prove increasingly important to the overall narrative. Were introducing a world that will ultimately become quite important to the future of the MCU, Feige said.

Werewolf by Nightis an exploration of new characters and a corner of the MCU that has only been touched a small handful of times in other recent Disney+ projects like,WandaVision, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness andWhat If?s Zombies episode. The introduction of Baroness Blood in the coming weeks further explores themes of magic, horror and darker tones in the MCU.

Baroness Blood could possibly be a larger threat. The events of Werewolf by Night cant be contained and, according to Kevin Feige, the events and characters introduced will play a larger role in the grand scheme of the MCU and its overall narrative. Im looking at you, Dane Whitman!

Disney+s Werewolf by Night will premiere on October 7th and Blade will premiere whenever Feige can allegedly find someone who writes a script longer 90 pages with more than two lackluster fight scenes.

To collect the first field data in June, Escobar assembled and trained a team of Virginia Tech students, including one graduate student and three undergraduates. The team, joined by students from four Colombian universities, visited four sites with differing elevations, temperatures, and ecological conditions to trap and sample more than 250 vampire bats.

Working at night, when bats are most active, they caught bats in large rectangular mist nets in forests and farmlands. They also learned how to descend into caves wearing biohazard suits, gloves, and masks to capture bats during the day. The bats were placed in bags and taken back to a mobile lab, where Escobar and the students identified the species, measured them, drew blood samples, tagged them, and fed them a sugar water solution before releasing them.

The opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in research and fieldwork is a priority for the college. Students studying in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation are expected to complete an experiential learning experience before graduation; one option for fulfilling this requirement is undergraduate research.

The college and department also value inclusion and opportunity, and Escobar specifically encouraged applications from students from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds in disease ecology.

Dyess Harp, from Berryville, Virginia, who graduated in June with a degree in fish and wildlife conservation, said the experience affirmed her interest in pursuing a masters degree in the field.

The opportunity to get hands-on experience in biodiversity, disease ecology, and bats, and be part of such a multicultural, supportive team was a dream come true, said Harp. For me, this was a really encouraging thing because queer people, especially transgender people, have historically not been included in field research trips of this scope.

Quan Dong, a senior from Annandale, Virginia, majoring in wildlife conservation and biological sciences, called it the trip of a lifetime.

This was by far my best college experience to date, he said. Field work is a unique experience that cannot really be replicated any other way. I was able to learn skills related to the physical aspects of field work, such as the techniques for setting up a mist net and pacing yourself for a day of hiking through the mountains. I was also able to learn how to be an effective researcher, providing critical feedback and collaborating with others. I expect these skills to stay with me throughout my life and help to stimulate a fruitful career in wildlife conservation.

Dong also formulated his own separate research project on bat acoustics and echolocation activity. He recorded bat vocalizations and is now investigating the unique and common languages of vampire bats across various regions.

Escobar and a new group of students will return next year to collect more samples and complete the study. In the meantime, the team is analyzing a centurys worth of historical data from Latin America, looking for patterns in climate change and rabies spillover that may be helpful in predicting future transmission events.

Students who study wildlife conservation in the College of Natural Resources and Environment have a unique opportunity not only to get mud on their boots, but also to conduct work with the CDC and other health agencies that study wildlife diseases, Escobar said. Through projects like this, we are filling a critical niche: the empirical study of climate change effects on disease emergence.

Student success is the central focus of our department, and gaining research experience working in new environments and with pressing environmental issues is a great way for students to expand their resume and ensure their success as they move beyond Virginia Tech, said Joel Snodgrass, department head and professor in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation. Dr. Escobars work represents just such an opportunity and clearly demonstrates the benefits to our students of a diverse faculty and student body.
