Emmy Awards: Will ‘The Walking Dead’ win Best Prosthetic Makeup without ‘Game of Thrones’ as competition? – Goldderby

If the ever-decaying walkers from The Walking Dead could smile, now would be the time to do it as the Emmy prospects are bright for this AMC hit drama. In both 2015 and 2016, Game of Thrones bested The Walking Dead in the catch-all category of Best Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Limited Series, Movie or Special. But with that Emmy powerhouse sitting out this cycle, the cult favorite could pick up a third trophy for its frighteningly good makeup.

The Walking Dead team won this prize for each of its first two seasons in 2011 and 2012. Indeed, the makeup artists have contended for five of the six seasons of the show. They lost in 2013 to HBOs movie Behind the Candelabra, in which Michael Douglas was transformed into Liberace. They were snubbed for their fourth season with the prize going to Game of Thrones for the first time and then lost to American Horror Story: Freak Show (2015) and Game of Thrones again last year.

This year they submitted the season opener The Day Will Come When You Wont Be (Greg Nicotero, Jake Garber, Garrett Immel, Kevin Wasner, Gino Crognale and Kerrin Jackson). This was a wise choice as Rick (Andrew Lincoln) is forced by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to retrieve his beloved bat from a huge crowd of walkers in various different stages of decay. Crognale joined the crew in season two while Jackson is new this year.

The Walking Dead: Every Episode Ranked , Worst to Best

The Emmy for Best Prosthetic Makeup is a catch-all category and the Dead crew face a varied lineup of shows: American Horror Story: Roanoke, Penny Dreadful, Saturday Night Live and Westworld.

The Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild began handing out awards in 2014 and The Walking Dead owned the Best Special Makeup Effects Television and New Media Series prize for three years running. Earlier this year, Westworld won that award facing off against all of its Emm rivals save AHS: Roanoke (in its place was Game of Thrones).
