AWARDS
John Ryan Wood of Columbia, a graduate of David H. Hickman High School, received the Jay L. and Ferne D. Wilder Work Award at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout as part of the 2017 annual student awards presentations. Awards are given based on outstanding accomplishments in the areas of academics, work and character.
Rachel Volmert, daughter of Catherine and James Volmert of Columbia, recently received the Bonnie Zelenak Excellence in Tutoring Award from the University of Missouri. This award recognizes tutors whose enthusiasm for teaching and outstanding commitment to helping students succeed at MU distinguishes them from their peers. Volmert, a 2013 graduate of Rock Bridge High School, is currently a senior at MU. She is studying economics, finance, Spanish and international studies. In addition, she is the director of Tiger Pantry, a food pantry that provides food assistance for those in need within the University of Missouri community.
Traci Lynn of Columbia, a junior and psychology major at the University of Missouri, was recently inducted into Tau Sigma, a national academic honor society whose mission is to recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students. To qualify, a student must have transferred to MU and maintained a 3.5 GPA or above during their first semester while taking at least 12 credit hours. Lynn is a recipient of the Arts and Science Student Success Scholarship and the William T. Horner Honorary Scholarship. In addition, she is a member of the international honor society for psychology students, Psi Chi.
Jansen Smith of Columbia, an exercise science major, was one of 24 Distinguished Scholars at William Woods University in Fulton. At the end of every academic year, the university recognizes a select group of students as Distinguished Scholars. Faculty members designate one graduating senior from each program for the honor. While eligibility requires a minimum 3.4 grade point average, faculty also consider other relevant academic factors in the selection process.
Mary Cleek of Columbia and Baylie Borman of Kingdom City were among 12 students chosen as outstanding representatives of their classes by the Student Alumni Council of William Woods University in Fulton. More than 100 students applied. Nominees must demonstrate academic achievement, campus and community involvement and leadership. Cleek, a sports management and ASL-English interpreting major, received an Outstanding Sophomore Award. Borman, a business administration major, received an Outstanding Junior Award.
Jordan Williamson of Columbia, daughter of Jenny and Eric Williamson, has been accepted to attend Harding University in Searcy, Ark., for fall 2017. Williamson graduated from Rock Bridge High School where she participated in swim, cross-country, track, Young Republicans and Tri Theta. She was a senior mentor and was the leader of Rock Bridge Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She received a Rock Bridge Lions Club scholarship. Williamson will be welcomed to campus Aug. 17 for Student Impact, an orientation program designed to help freshmen and new students learn about campus and make the adjustment to college life.
Urmila Kutikkad of Columbia was honored at the 2017 Carleton College Honors Convocation in Northfield, Minn., where Urmilla was awarded the Class of 1963 Fellowship, which was established by the class of 1963 on their 25th reunion and provides opportunities for qualified students to pursue intellectual or creative interests.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Ethan Zars of Columbia, son of Troy and Melissa Zars, was selected as one of 12 Cherng Summer Scholars within the Honors College at the University of Missouri. This program provides $8,000 to selected undergraduate students to fund research projects or artistic endeavors during a 10-week summer course. Zars is one of the first student researchers in the program. Currently a senior at MU, Zars is majoring in chemistry with minors in biology and mathematics. Zars will research how a chemical reaction that moves or swings back and forth can be performed using molecules common in biology. Results from Zars research may help explain various phenomena in biology.
The following students received scholarships to attend Missouri State University in Springfieldfor the 2017-18 academic year. Students were selected based on their ACT scores, GPA, standing in graduating class and leadership shown in community and school activities:Mercedes Allen of Hallsville, Board of Governors Scholarship;Kristin Hill of Ashland, Provost Scholarship; Janae King of Ashland, Provost Scholarship;Mackenzie Thomas of Columbia, A+ Recognition Scholarship;Julianna Vogt of Columbia, Deans' Scholarship.
On June 7, the following students were awarded college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. Students had to submit a detailed scholarship application, write an essay and provide information about extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions. Students also had to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official and earn SAT scores that confirmed the qualifying test performance:Paul H. Cover of Columbia, Rock Bridge high School, National Merit Scholarship, Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa. Pauls probable career field: medicine.Allison G. Foster of Columbia, Rock Bridge High School, National Merit Scholarship, Baylor University, Waco, Texas. Allisons probable career field: biomedical engineering.Richard R. Shang of Columbia, Rock Bridge High school, National Merit Scholarship, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. Richards probable career field: mechanical engineering.Yuan L. Zhuang of Columbia, National Merit Scholarship, Emory University, Atlanta. Yuans probable career field: neuroscience.
Julia Algya of Columbia was recently awarded a $750 scholarship from Columbia College for the 2017-18 academic year in honor of Frank S. Westling, a highly decorated infantry officer and former dean of the college's Extended Studies division, now called Adult Higher Education. To qualify for the Westling award, the recipient had to be an online, evening or nationwide student pursuing a degree with Columbia College, have attended Columbia College during the 2016-17 academic year, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have at least 15 credit hours with Columbia College, provide evidence of leadership and service to their community, school or country and write a 400- to 500-word essay about their achievements and career goals.
Jordan A. Gross of Columbia has been awarded the Promise Scholarship from Missouri State University in West Plains. Gross, daughter of Melissa Gross, is a 2017 graduate of Father Tolton Regional Catholic High School. She is currently a freshman and plans to pursue a degree in pre-med.
Jonathan Rich of Columbia will receive a Laser/Electro-Optics Club Scholarship from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, for the 2017-2018 academic year. Jonathan is a 2016 graduate of Rock Bridge High School and is currently enrolled in the laser/electro-optics program at Indian Hills Community College.

Ruth Russell, of Columbia, graduated May 13, with a bachelor of arts degree in communication sciences and disorders from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Kailin Marie Tintes, of Columbia, graduated May 21 from the University of WisconsinMilwaukee with a bachelor of arts degree in the College of Letters and Science.
Kaitlyn Winters Bradley, of Columbia, graduated from Goshen College in Goshen, Ind., on April 30 wIth a masters degree in environmental education.
Nathaniel Jacob Nichols of Columbia graduated from Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., in May with a master of science degree in environmental engineering.
The following local students graduated from Culver-Stockton College in Canton on May 13:Cory Dirigo of Columbia graduated with a B.S. degree in criminal justice.Maddie Embree of Sturgeon graduated with a B.A. degree in media communication.Joshua German of Columbia graduated with a B.S. degree in sport management.Mariah Mauck of Rocheport graduated with a B.S. degree in accountancy. She was also named to Culver Stocktons Presidents List for academic achievement during the spring 2017 semester. To be named to the President's List, students have earned a 4.0 GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours.Samantha Olson of Ashland graduated with a B.S. degree in business administration. She was also named to the Deans List during the spring 2017 semester, an academic distinction based on cumulative grade point average, with a minimum of 60 credit hours earned.Paul Pezold of Columbia graduated with a B.A. degree in English. Paul was also named to the honor roll during the spring 2017 semester, an academic distinction based on cumulative grade point average, with a minimum of 60 credit hours earned.
The following students graduated from Harding University in Searcy, Ark., at its commencement exercises on May 6:Jonathan White of Centralia received a bachelor of business administration in finance. White graduated Magna Cum Laude. Gabrielle Nagel from Harrisburg received a bachelor of science in psychology.
Katherine Gardner of Columbia graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor of arts honors (history and international studies) from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, at commencement exercises in spring 2017.
Husam Abdul-kafi of Columbia graduated from Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Conn., with a bachelor of arts degree in math on May 28.

Anastasia Zooey Brewer of Columbia graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., during its commencement ceremonies on June 4. Brewer majored in political science and minored in educational policy studies.
The following students graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau during its spring 2017 commencement ceremonies:Kacy Hall of Columbia graduated with a master of public administration with a major in public administration.Jade Holly of Columbia graduated with a associate of arts in child care and guidance with a major in child care and guidance option and a bachelor of science with a major in human environmental studies: child development option. Jade was also named to the Deans List for the spring 2017 semester. Students named to the Deans List earned at least a 3.75 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, completed at least 12 hours of standard graded credit and achieved no grade below a B. Jade is a former student and basketball player at Hickman High School.Patrick Remis of Columbia graduated with a bachelor of science with a major in biology: pre-physician assistant option.Ryan Wiessing of Columbia graduated with a bachelor of science with a major in criminal justice: law enforcement option.
Monica Greenleaf of Columbia graduated with an associate of applied science degree from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, at the end of the colleges 2016-2017 spring term.
Emily Thomas of Columbia graduated with a B.A. degree in history, Cum Laude, from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., at its 143rd commencement exercises held on June 10. Thomas is the child of Ian and Ellen Thomas of Columbia. Emily was also honored at the 2017 Carleton College honors convocation when she received the Ellen Rogers Steif Memorial Award. The prize is awarded each year by the history department to history majors who best reflect Steif's personal qualities and academic achievements.
