Tenet is Christopher Nolan's latest film and it's a mind-bending trip. For fans of that, intense action, and plot twists, check out these movies.
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Tenetwas one of the most anticipated movies of 2020. As is always the case with Nolan, the plot is driven by mind-bending concepts, most notably time traveling and time inversion. Paired with exceptional cinematography and action-packed scenes, it makes for a highly entertaining watch. While the action is definitely hard to follow, the screenplay is one of the easiest to understand in his filmography. The story's protagonist is recruited for a highly secretive mission to prevent the third world war.

Tenet is one of Nolan's boldest, loudest and fastest movies so far and it left many fans craving for more. Luckily, there are several movies worth watching to satisfy the itch. Some are focused on time traveling, while others masterfully create a suspenseful atmosphere that makes Nolan's latest hit movie so compelling.
A neo-noir Sci-Fi thriller from 1999, The Thirteenth Floor is kind of like The Matrix: it's one of those movies that make the main protagonist and the viewers question reality. Nolan's fans will delight in the fact that the explanations are not spoon-fed to the viewer. There's also a slightly unnecessary romantic plot and cheesy writing that fans had to contend with in Tenet as well.
The cast is outstanding, especially Vincent D'Onofrio and Gretchen Mol, who both did an outstanding job. This movie is an absolute classic that set the bar for other mind-bending movies, such as Nolan's Inception.
Dark City came out 22 years ago, back when it was much harder to bring psychologically twisted concepts and science fiction to the big screen. Rufus Sewell plays John Murdoch, a man who wakes up in a hotel room with no memory whatsoever and soon realizes he is wanted for several murders. When it comes to comparing it to Nolan's movies, the premise is more similar to Memento than Tenet.
John also has supernatural powers and his city is ruled by 'the Strangers,' a mysterious group of people who walk around in trenchcoats andhave the ability to manipulate people's memories and bend their wills as they please. John is simultaneously running from the police and avoiding these men while fearing for his life. Dark City is literally dark: it's always night time in this creepy place.
Due to a mysterious comet passing the Earth and a power blackout, a dinner party of eight gets really weird. Coherence is a psychological sci-fi thriller in which the characters stumble upon an alternate version of their dinner party at the house next door. They are worried and defensive; some even entertain the idea of killing their doppelgangers.
Unlike Tenet, the writing of Coherence is its strongest point. The plot is driven by its characters and the cast. The camera angles are boring and predictable, so those who are looking for action-packed genius takes probably won't enjoy it as much.
Those who liked Nolan's Tenet, but were left disappointed by the screenplay should watch Spike Lee's Inside Man. Denzel Washington plays a dashing detective who is trying to catch a curious bank robber, driven primarily by perfectionism rather than a lust for money. Just like Tenet's action premise has been seen countless times, Inside Man is also primarily a heist movie. But since it has its own unpredictable plot twists, it's better than most movies of its kind.
Those who appreciated Tenet's characters being funny from time to time will also like Inside Man. Even though the theme is very serious, the movie manages to include some comic relief.
While the production quality of Timecrimes comes nowhere close to Nolan's masterpieces, fans of his work will probably like this 2003 movie for its dark and clever plot that involves a fair share of time manipulation. The movie opens up with a man looking at a woman through his binoculars while vacationing in the countryside with his girlfriend. Then, he is attacked by a person with a bandaged face and runs to a suspicious-looking laboratory.

There, he comes face to face with a time-traveling machine and the result is similar toTenet's: there are now two versions of Hector running around - but time moves forward, so it's easier to follow. It's hard to pull off sci-fi movies with low budgets, but Nacho Vigalondo, the director of Timecrimes, made an outstanding slasher thriller nonetheless.
David Fincher's 1997 drama is both mysterious and filled with action. Michael Douglasportrays a banker who is offered to play a seemingly innocent game, but he soon realizes he can't tell what's real life and what's the game anymore. In the process of trying to figure out what is going on, he has no one left to trust.
He can't even use his house or withdraw his money from the bank. The Gameis not filmed as masterfully as Nolan's latest hit, but it explores Nolan-esque themes, such as existentialism and construction of reality. It's one of the greatestthrillers from the nineties. The atmosphere is dark and twisted, achieved by outstanding lighting, camera angles, and editing.
This 2019 sci-fi thriller stars Boyd Holbrook, Cleopatra Coleman, and Michael C. Hall. Just like Tenet, it creates a sense of impending doom and looks for answers in time traveling. It's about members of the police force trying to catch a mysterious serial killer who runs around in a hoodie. The movie jumps between years that are nine years apart: 1988, 1997, 2006, 2015, and 2024.
In The Shadow Of The Moon is easy to watch and it required almost no emotional investment from the viewer. Those who like to observe the same characters throughout the years will get their fix watching this movie. Just don't expect Nolan's scientific explanations and cutting edge technology.
Extraction is one of those films where Chris Hemsworth proves that his range spans far beyond playing Thor. Those who loved Tenet for its gripping action sequences and cinematography will definitely enjoy watching this movie - its one-shot takes are especially exciting. The hero's name is Tyler Rake and just like Tenet's Protagonist, he is an excellent soldier because he has nothing to lose but his life.
When it was first released on Netflix, Extraction was one of the most viewed movies of the week and it later turned out to be one of the most viewed premieres in the streaming giant's history. The ratings are not as high as they are for Tenet, though. Those who expect mind-boggling plot twists should probably watch something else.
Fans of unexpected movie plot twists should definitely watch Predestination, one of the bestfilmsfor those who like to be surprised. Just like Tenet, it is considered an actionsci-fi movie. They both have to do with time travel: in Predestination, Ethan Hawke plays a temporal agent who travels back to 1975 New York to prevent a bombing.

Predestination was not directed by Nolan, but it's so complex and twisted that it might as well be. The movie is based on Robert A. Heinlein's short story called All You Zombies. It also received numerous accolades. Those who couldn't follow Tenet should consider themselves warned, though. This one is even trickier to wrap your mind around.
Those who want something with an atmosphere almost identical to Tenet should watch Nolan's masterpiece Inception. It's paced slower than Tenet, but it's much harder to follow. There areseveral things that it does far better than Tenet, but those who crave for the same amount of action might find themselves a bit bored.
Just like Tenet, Inception revolves around a mind-bending concept. In addition to that, the viewers are much more emotionally invested in the plot. The protagonist is Dom Cobb, a man who can enter other people's dreams. Just like in Tenet, there is also a subplot with a child and theme of time relativity. Even though the final momentis not transparent, it is considered one of those movies with the greatest endings.
