BBC One Christmas film encourages people to live their #XmasLife this season – The Drum

BBC One is urging friends and family to get together and enjoy #XmasLife with a film that trots out BBC stars and features programmes.

Produced by BBC Creative, the short film depicts leaving behind the trials and daily stresses of 2019, reminding audiences to embrace Christmas in all its jingle belled glory instead.

The fast-paced film starts with talk show host Graham Norton in a chair by the fire, with 2019 memes floating over his head. He snatches them from the air, throws them into the flames and uses his signature red chair lever to throw the action in motion to Christmas.

The film then shows different ways to celebrate the holidays, including Rochelle Humes sleeping in while animated creatures flitter around her. It also shows families and friends living their best #XmasLife, whether its staying in their pyjamas all day or spending quality time with the family, including not talking politics at the dinner table, and becoming a kid again when seeing grandma. There is also a talking cuckoo clock, a cat on a Roomba and a turkey who encourages vegetarianism. The film marks Christmastime as a time to kick back, with BBC One at the heart of festive living rooms up and down the UK.

XmasLife was created for BBC One by in-house creative agency BBC Creative, working with director Ernest Desumbila and his team from Iconoclast.

In addition to the film, the BBC has teamed up with animators and illustrators including Alex Grigg (MTV EMA 2019) and Teddy Hall (Ducktales, Pink Panther) to create a selection of joyous idents to carry through the holiday.

This Christmas, BBC One says it will be the home of the biggest programmes that family and friends can enjoy together, including Gavin and Stacey, Strictly Come Dancing, Call the Midwife, Mrs Browns Boys, EastEnders, Doctor Who, Dracula, A Christmas Carol, Michael McIntyres Big Show, The Snail and the Whale and The Trial of Christine Keeler, among others.

Chris Hooper, head of marketing, BBC One, said: Christmas is a time when we come together through the shared treats and rituals of the season to take care of ourselves. BBC One has a special role in helping to bring people together and, understanding that poignant festive brand films are a territory that feels well-explored, we wanted to demonstrate this in way that was relatable and fun.

Added Helen Rhodes, executive creative director, BBC Creative: Christmas doesnt officially start until BBC One release their Christmas campaign, so we hope weve done the nation proud with a film that shakes off the shackles of 2019 and embraces our favourite time of the year. If showing a yoga-clad woman destroying avocados with a giant gingerbread, and a Maine Coon breed of cat riding on top of a Roomba, is wrong then I dont want to be right.

The music for the film is a recording and reimagining of Gorillaz Feel Good Inc with a rock choir.
