Castlevania Season 2 Recap Expands The World Of Dracula – Comic Years

A Castlevania season 2 recap is extremely important given that we are on the cusp of the release of season 3. Castlevania is Netflixs original anime series that both critics and fans worldwide love. The anime, in many ways, launched Netflixs original anime flex, and rightfully so. While Castlevania season 1 was extremely short, season 2 more than makes up for it, as will be evident in this Castlevania season 2 recap.

Obviously, to do a Castlevania season 2 recap, we will be diving right into spoilers. Our season 1 recap outlined the very short first season and how it set up its main characters. A nation in the 1400s is in ravages after the legendary Dracula (Graham McTavish) unleashes his monsters upon humanity. Seeing how the church killed his very human wife for thinking she was a witch, Dracula is hell-bent on taking revenge on all of humanity.

Only three people stand in his way. A disgraced and apathetic former monster-hunting warrior. A righteous and wise sorceress. And Draculas own half-human son who wishes to stop his father from murdering his mothers people. Most of season 1 set up a lot of empathy for Dracula and his tragic love story that turned to vengeance. We also spent a lot of time with Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage), the former disgraced warrior who finds purpose again in a new fight. Along with Sypha (Alejandra Reynoso) the sorceress, the two join Draculas son Alucard (James Callis) in destroying him and saving humanity.

Last warning for spoilers from all of Castlevania Season 2!

Season 1 ended as we saw our main characters, the terrific trio of Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard embark on their journey to stop Dracula. Alucard fills them in on Draculas magic castle, which can teleport anywhere as per his will. The key to defeating him lies in capturing the castle, making retreat impossible. To do this, the three travel to Trevors old Belmont mansion. A place where generations of Belmonts have amassed knowledge of magic, monsters, and Dracula himself in a massive underground library.Our heroes spend most of Castlevania season 2 in what is basically a season-wide bottle episode. Meaning that for the majority of the season, the three heroes spend their time in the Belmont library, trying to find a way to capture Draculas castle. Its done this way because season 2 is entirely all about the villains!

Its hard to do a Castlevania season 2 recap without deep-diving into the villains of the series. And there is, apparently, a lot of them. While season 1 made Dracula seem like a lone legendary monster who single-handedly reigns over the kingdom of the Night, its a lot more complicated than that. Season 1 only saw Dracula dispatch mindless monsters into the world, but their world is much more populated.Season 2 introduces us to a hierarchy of the Vampire kingdom, with Dracula reigning as its King. Vampires leaders from all over the world, Draculas Generals, arrive at his castle, for the war he has declared on humanity. There are many new characters , some entirely villainous, some who are bad but sympathetic, and others even more duplicitous than Dracula himself.

Castlevania season 2 begins with more insight and backstory into the events of season 1. While season 1 opened with Draculas wife burned at the stake, a flashback sequence shows us how things got to that point. Draculas travels during this time also prove important later on in this season. This provides even more sympathy and empathy for the main villain of the series, seeing how misunderstood and tragic Draculas story is.But then were introduced to the main story of the season.

Draculas war against humans is not a lone endeavor. His generals cannot agree on how to properly go about with the extinction of the entire human race, who also serve as their food source. As bickering continues, Dracula appears to announce that the war effort will be led by the only two humans in his court, Hector and Isaac. This upsets many of the others, who are all vampires themselves.Many speak out openly only for Dracula to dismiss them. Others defy in silence, plotting and scheming. All the while were introduced to each of Draculas supporting bad guys in more detail, and one at a time.

First and foremost of the baddies of season 2 is Godbrand (Peter Stormare). A Viking vampire, Godbrand is ruthless, loudmouthed and defiant. He is purely a warrior, with little intelligence to back it up. He constantly defies Dracula, questioning him in open court, while all he wants to do is eat humans. Godbrands defiance finally crosses over into open treason against Dracula, resulting in Isaac killing him.

Isaac (Adetokumboh MCormack) is one of two humans that serve Dracula. Dracula met Isaac and Hector during his travels, away from his wife. He discovered their magical powers of being able to revive the dead, sometimes in monstrous ways. They bonded over their mutual alienation from the human race.After his wifes death, Dracula recruited Isaac and Hector into his court. Their own torturous life with humans cause them to hate their own kind, making them relate to Draculas pain. Together Isaac and Hector are in charge of wiping out humanity. Although, Hector (Theo James) believes its more of a reduction of humanity than outright genocide.

Carmilla (Jaime Murray) is another leader of a Vampire nation who appears at Draculas castle much later than the rest. Upon arrival, she questions Draculas motivations, insulting his wife and his love for her. She then lays out a plan for Draculas castle to teleport into another town, as part of her war strategy. In reality, Carmilla is planning to overthrow Dracula and has armies waiting at that town to attack the Castle. Godbrand was on her side, until his death. Carmila ends up swaying Hector into her side, having him vouch for the plan to Dracula, convincing him to move the castle.

While most of season 2 is all this, West Wing / House Of Cards styled political drama in Draculas court, the final two episodes are epic battle sequences! As Draculas reign weakens over his own empire, the trio of heroes finally find a way to trap his teleporting castle into one spot. However, Draculas forces know about their whereabouts and attempt to stop them.As Sypha tries to put her magic onto Draculas castle. Alucard and Trevor have to fight off a squadron of demon monsters. The fight ends up destroying Trevors ancestors library, but all for a good cause.

The fight choreography is some of the best Ive ever seen, not just for an Anime, but even compared to live-action fights. Its a fight against time as Sypha strains stop Draculas castle from teleporting away at the first sight of attack.In the meantime, Carmillas plan succeeds as Draculas castle teleports to her chosen city. Her armies, lying in wait, invade the Castle, squaring off against Draculas own forces, and those Generals still loyal to him. Hector and Carmilla escape, as Hector realizes he has unwittingly betrayed his mentor and Carmillas grins in satisfaction. However, not for long.

Before Carmillas forces can overtake Draculas, Sypha teleports the castle right on top of the Belmont estate! Carmillas coup fails, while she is alone, not knowing the fate of Dracula. Having defeated the squadron sent to stop them, Trevor, Alucard, and Sypha enter Draculas castle to face off with the man himself.

Another epic fight scene sees the three dispatching Draculas remaining generals before entangling with him. Forcefully loyal to Dracula, Isaac stands guard, only for Dracula to teleport him into a faraway desert, for his own protection. The fight between Dracula and our three heroes is one-sided. They are initially no match for him, except Alucard. But Dracula beats him all over his castle, clearly getting the upper hand until the fight moves to Alucards childhood room.Realizing that he is killing the last remaining symbol of his love, Dracula pauses. Which gives Alucard enough time to stake him through the heart. As Dracula confesses his pain and love for his son, he begins to crumble, only to Sypha and Trevor to arrive and finish him off. Dracula is dead.

The ending of Castlevania Season 2 is as tragic as the beginning. Ultimately, Draculas own grief blinded him to the love his wife left behind, in the form of their son. And it was reclaiming that love that ended his pain, not the hate he spread around the world. After his death, the three heroes return to Trevors estate, which now has Draculas castle above it. Not knowing what to do Alucard considers going back into a deep slumber. But Trevor has other plans.

Trevor Belmont bequeaths his ancestors repository of monster hunting knowledge and property to Alucard. He suggests that using his forefathers legacy to fight monsters, Alucard can spend his life trying to undo the damage done by his father, making his castle stand for something better. Trevor and Sypha then go off together, to have more adventures across the country as they clean up Draculas mess and monsters. Its implied that they share a romantic relationship, but its kept very sweet and endearing.

Carmilla, upon hearing news of Draculas death, resigns to her kingdom. But not without taking Hector with her first; as her captive. While Isaac is alone in the desert, a gang of robbers approach and threaten him. He quickly kills them all in a stunning and shocking attack. Upon their death, Isaac realizes he needs his own army, and raises those robbers from the dead, traveling with them, with a new purpose in mind.

Castlevania Season 2 effectively ends the story thats been continuing from season 1. With the big bad dead, its a mystery what story season 3 will tell. Although it seems fairly certain that Carmilla, Hector, and Isaac will feature prominently as the antagonists to our three protagonists.

Castlevania season 3 premieres on Netflix on March 5.
