"There's something irresistible about having a go at such an iconic character," Mark Gatiss said, "and as with Sherlock Holmes in Baker Street you know, briefly having the keys of the castle to play around with, it's irresistible and exciting."

"I think Dracula -- it's not so much that one would say this is a Dracula for now -- it's that Dracula is properly timeless," Steven Moffat added."If you look at the book he's not in it that much. He's in the first few chapters, and then he is in the background."

"The thing that we thought we could try was to make Dracula the main character," Gatiss continued.

Other major figures in the show got a word in as well, such asdirector Jonny Cambell and lead actors John Heffernan and Claes Bang.

"It's very rare that these opportunities come along to direct a classic like Dracula," Campbell said. "I knew I was going to be in safe hands with Steven and Mark, who are two massive uber-fans of horror in general and Dracula in particular. If they were doing it, I wanted to be involved."

Draculaconsists of three ninety-minute episodes and is available for streaming on Netflix. The series begins with the titular blood-sucking count in Transylvania circa 1897 as he plots his dominance of Victorian England.
