Everything We Know About ‘Castlevania’ Season 4 So Far – Newsweek

Netflix announced the return of its animated series Castlevania for a fourth season in March and now creator and writer Warren Ellis has more.

Posting to his official site, Ellis described a call with Netflix where the success of Castlevania season 3 was discussed.

"I can't actually tell you all the exact numbers," Ellis wrote. "What I can say is that season 3's popularity was an order of magnitude over that of season 2, and season 2 was popular enough to get us season 3. It turns out season 3 did, really, shockingly well."

That's good news for season 4 of the series, and may even assure a season 5 down the line. Almost as impressive is that Ellis doesn't anticipate a release date delay for the upcoming season because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic lockdown.

Ellis expressed hope that the success of the series could have a salutary effect on animation more generally.

"If it turns out that this weird thing is what prised open the door on doing adult-oriented drama narrative in English language animation, I would be delighted," Ellis wrote. "Because we just proved that the audience is there, in the same numbers that show up for live-action drama."

While Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage), Alucard (James Callis) and Sypha Belnades (Alejandra Reynoso) successfully killed Dracula (Graham McTavish) at the end of season 2, it's hard to keep a good vampire down. In season 3, the monks of Lindenfeld attempted to resurrect Dracula, but instead found Dracula reunited with his beloved wife, Lisa, in hell.

But while Dracula may be out of the mortal realm (for now), the vampire Carmilla (Jaime Murray) still plots to take over Wallachia, with her Council of Sisters controlling the power of Hector (Theo James), Dracula's devil forgemaster. With Hector under Carmilla's control, she now has power over Dracula's night creatures. A disillusioned Alucard also looks to be following more and more in his father's bloody footsteps. Many dangers lie ahead in the upcoming season.

"Four seasons of an Anglophone adult drama animation about vampires, moral philosophy and toilet paper. Which is not a niche production, but something with an audience of (stops, sees Netflix sniper rifle dot)... many, many millions. Who saw that coming?" Ellis said, ending with his gratitude to everybody for watching.

While season of Castlevania doesn't have an official release date, the gap between seasons 2 and 3 was approximately a year and four months, suggesting we might see season 4 episodes of the series premiere on Netflix in July of 2021.
