How to help break a vampire world record – The Tab

An event to tide you over till Halloween!

Fancy a post-exam day trip somewhere different?

English Heritage is attempting to break the world record for the most people dressed as vampires and you can take part! The event is taking place at Whitby Abbey on the 26th of May between six and seven oclock in the evening and you can even get there via public transport.

Theres a direct train that runs between Newcastle and Whitby and the distance is even short enough to drive, so this is an easy day trip for Newcastle and Northumbria students.

To participate you must be wearing what English Heritage has defined as traditional vampire attire: black trousers or a black dress, black shoes,a waistcoat, shirt, black cape or collared overcoat (a different colour on the inside is allowed), fangs on the top set of teeth.

The current record that English Heritage is trying to beat is 1,039 so they need as many people as they can get to win. This record is held by Cedar Fair Entertainment based in Doswell, Virginia (if taking the record from some American is extra motivation for you to join in).

Whitby Abbey is hosting this event in honour of the 125th anniversary of Bram Stokers Dracula. Stoker wrote the best-known vampire tale after visiting Whitby and based a large portion of the story there. The cliffside and Whitby Abbey feature in many passages where the central character, Laura, sleepwalks along these gothic locationswhile caught in Draculas trance.

If you want to take part in this historic event that will mark this quasquicentennial anniversary of the novel, or just enjoy the silliness of dressing up as vampires with your friends and a thousand or so strangers, this is your opportunity. This is also a chance to enter the Abbey for free as admission normally costs 11, but those in correct attire will be allowed in for nothing to participate in the event.

Its sure to be a fun and somewhat ridiculous evening. There will be live music, a performance of an extract from Dracula, and food and drink available.

You can book your free tickets and let Whitby Abbey know you are coming using this link.

We hope to see some of you there in a few weeks!
