Exeter Northcott has announced plans to stage events over the next few months including a live stream of Romantics Anonymous, support for up-and-coming South West artists, theatre-making classes for young people and a swashbuckling family adventure for Christmas.

In partnership with local comedy troupe Le Navet Bete, Exeter Northcott will stage a version of Treasure Island running from December 9 to January 9.

Although the theatres pantomime has been put on hold, the team have found a way to stage this take on the Treasure Island classic, with social-distancing measures in place.

The safety of our audiences is our number one priority so were planning for people to be able to sit together in bubbles said Exeter Northcotts artistic director and chief executive, Daniel Buckroyd.

Well be working within the latest guidelines and putting measures in place so that our audiences can return to the theatre with confidence and enjoy a great live experience.

"At a time when theatres up and down the country are cancelling Christmas were delighted that we can give people here in Devon some festive fun to look forward to.

Le Navet Bete were Northcott Associates for many years and their hit comedies include Dracula: The Bloody Truth, The Three Musketeers and Aladdin. Treasure Island was a sell-out smash at Plymouths Athenaeum last year.

Al Dunn of Le Navet Bete said they could not wait to stage it in Exeter, Devon, this year.

Exeter is our hometown, he said. Its where we started off as a company making work in studio spaces and performing on the High Street.

"Since then the scale of our work has grown massively: we tour midscale venues nationally and internationally and the quality of the production - the set, costumes, music - combined with a whopping dose of silliness enables us to offer a fantastic theatrical experience.

Exeter Northcott will also welcome young theatre-makers back to the theatre from August. Up to 20 young people aged 13 - 17 will return to the theatre for four days of small-group theatre-making activities to help ease them out of lockdown.

Northcott Young Company Saturday classes will then resume from September 12, leading up to a socially-distanced performance at the Northcott during October half term.

Lisa Hudson, Exeter Northcotts creative learning manager said: We know how much young people have been affected by lockdown - being away from friends and prevented from taking part in the activities they love has had a real impact on well-being so resuming our NYC classes has felt more important than ever.

Following their recent visit to Exeter with Mallory Towers, this September audiences will also be able to live-stream Emma Rices latest production, Romantics Anonymous. Based on the French film Les Emotifs Anonymes, the show tells the story of two shy chocolatiers and their attempts to survive in the bruising real world.

The show will be a fully-staged production broadcast live with an intro from Exeter Northcotts Artistic Director and an online Q&A in the interval.
