Rescuers discover body in Modesto creek is Dracula

Last week, a security employee at E&J Gallo Winery in Modesto spotted something floating in Dry Creek between Yosemite Boulevard and Grand Street. It looked like a body.

According to the Sacramento Bee, firefighters were expecting a grim recovery task when they were dispatched to the scene Thursday afternoon. But instead of scooping up the remains of a person who suffered an unhappy fate, they fished out ... Dracula?

Well, sort of. It was a Dracula doll, complete with cape and hood, but not the dour Bela Lugosi kind of Dracula. No, this Dracula was smiling, jolly no sign of a mood-crushing stake driven through his chest.

How did a cheerful vampire manage be floating down a local waterway, especially on a sunny afternoon, when he's supposed to be safely ensconced in a coffin? We may never know.

But that's fine with Modesto Fire Battalion Chief Randy Anderson. He's just happy not to have a human body on his hands.

"For sure, that's a better outcome than having to pull somebody up who's demised or injured," he told the Bee.
