What’s coming to the big stage: theater preview – The Vantage

The big stage at Newman University will soon be filled with dramatic productions, from plays to musicals.

Director of Theatre Mark Mannette and Music Department Director Deanne Zogleman said they have big plans for this year and that each semester will include some big performances.

The fall will be kicked off with a production of Dracula, which will be directed by Mannette. The next production will be The Damask Drum, which will be directed by senior Austin Schwartz. In October, there will also be a classical concert in the chapel by the Chorale and Troubadours that Zogleman will oversee.

The spring will consist of three productions, two of which will be musicals directed by Zogleman. The first musical will be The Little Mermaid, and the other will be the annual spring show, which is a musical revue consisting of popular songs. The third production will be another play directed by Mannette: Shakespeares Othello.

Zogleman said she is eager to put on a Disney musical and is able to do it because she has a bunch of great students. Even though its only been a few weeks since classes started, she said, her students have come together, and it truly is a family.

I'm most excited about the students I have as enrollment has gone up by a third, which makes me really happy. I'm also really excited about The Little Mermaid just because it's a musical and I absolutely loved Disney and always have, but I'm also very excited about the spring show and just this whole year, Zogleman said.

Mannette said that he is looking forward to this year, especially the productions he will be directing.

I'm excited about every project, frankly, Mannette said. I'm excited about the Dracula production as I've never directed Dracula before, and Im excited about the cast. I've also never directed Othello, but I've directed a number of other Shakespeare plays. So that's why I am excited about knocking that one off my list.

Dracula will be the first big production of the year and will be performed just in time for Halloween. It will be staged Oct. 20-23 in the performance hall. John Suffield will be playing Dracula, and the cast also will include Emily Maddux, Daniel Cubius-Arteaga, Corbin Molina, Austin Schwartz, Josh Fredrick, Hunter Bartholomew and Catherine Madison.
