This movie sparked a franchise as well as some spinoffs featuring the experiences the Warrens had and all that they did rid the world of some powerful demon-like entities. Like most movies on this list, this is not one that's recommended to watch at night, or alone.

The way it changed how we looked at zombie movies with the great FX makeup, the practical effects, and the intriguing storyline. It was a movie that paved the road for Zombie thrillers and made it a category all on its own. Without this movie, it's highly unlikely the zombie shows and movies we all love today would've had much success.

Arguably one of the most terrifying horror movies of all time, one that has been remade countless times, isThe Exorcist. When a teenage girl starts acting out of character, her overprotective mom looks everywhere for help when her sweet little girl becomes a demonic nightmare. When she recruits the help of a priest with a troubled past, they discover she is beyond repair and that not even God can help her.

Solely responsible for scarring kids around the country in the '70s,The Exorcistalso solidified the horror genre and created a fandom that is still going very strong today. It's still a favorite all these decades later.

Directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg, this movie isn't your stereotypical horror movie. In a small town with a beach as its biggest attraction, the town is met with a legendary shark that terrorizes the waters of the small town and the worst part is he is nearly unstoppable and hard to see.

Like many of Spielberg's movies, it revolutionized a genre and took practical and mechanical effects to a whole new level. This movie fueled nightmares of people across the world, with many refusing to swim in the beaches for fear of being gobbled up by a giant shark.

After a detective is assaulted by thugs and placed in an asylum run by a strange professor, hestarts investigating the professor'spreoccupation with another patient, the criminal genius Dr. Mabuse the hypnotist.

When the detective realizes Mabuse is connected with recent crimes, he must determine how Mabuse is communicating with the criminals, despite conflicting reports on the doctor's whereabouts, and capture him for good.

A foreign classic,Onibaba tells a story about a mother and daughter in law who make their living selling items of fallen samurai who wander into their land. When they learn that their beloved son/husband is killed in the war, the wife starts having an affair, much to the mother's disapproval. Literally attempting to scare her straight, the mother takes a mysterious mask and haunts her into stopping the affair.

Although it doesn't seem like the traditional horror movie, it does show a real and terrifying thing, a mother's wrath. It might not be as terrifying as other movies on this list, but it is a movie well ahead of its time.

One of the sequels to the originalAlien,Sigourney Weaver once again stars in this sci-fi horror about the terrifying aliens that stop at nothing to destroy humans and every trace of them. In this sequel, Ripley's pod lands on different earth 50 years later, only to be discovered by a colony of humans. When all connection to the outside world is lost, it is up to Ripley and the recruits to find their way back home.

Like the firstAlien, it has a lot of gory scenes, some jump scares, and a lot of destruction and great effects that make this movie one of the great classic, unconventional horror movies.

Everybody knows how the story goes, some astronauts in space receive a distress signal from an unidentified flying object and then all hell breaks loose. The scary part is that the creature is just beginning, and no one stands a chance against the Alien.

Alien was the first of its kind, mixing horror with sci-fi and forever changing the horror genre. The practical effects, the horrifying appearance of the Alien, and the endless amount of jump-scare make this an underrated yet classic gem. It's not a movie recommended for watching at night, but one that's definitely a good horror movie for the Halloween season.
