Monster movies very rarely give away any significant backstory concerning their beasts, but these 10 creatures were particularly mysterious.
As they say, "the devil you know is safer than the devil you don't." This means that the monsters of the imagination are often much scarier than those with concrete facts, and no movie genre knows that better than the dark realms of horror.

Characters like Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, and Michale Myers are definitely frightening individuals, but, at the end of the day, they're just dudes with malintent and various sharp objects. For a truly terrifying horror experience, many filmmakers keep their monsters in the dark. There are plenty of horror characters that are barely explained, leaving viewers to draw their own mortifying conclusions.
Guillermo del Toro might just be the patron saint of monsters when it comes to terrifying and beautiful creatures in his movies. Although there is some backstory given to the creature painted on the walls of his dining hall, the Pale Man himself is mostly just described as a child-eating ogre who could star in several nightmares. Inspired by the myth of Chronos, this frightening eyeless freak definitely registers high on the scare-o-meter.
Granted, those who have read the book know that there's more to the spirits and entities of the Overlook Hotel than Stanley Kubrick lets on. Be that as it may, the rhyme and reason to the hotel's abundance of ghosts and demons really isn't that laid out in either version.

The only thing fans truly know is that, by some dark force, the hotel is a functioning entity bent on the consumption of psychic energy.
On the other hand, in the book and the Disney movie, both written by Ray Bradbury, the origin and history of Mr. Dark and his sinister sideshow is kept very vague. Known mainly as the "October People," the evil ringmaster and his traveling carnival invade a sleepy little town, granting the townspeople's greatest wishes at the price of their souls. They are certainly a product of some of the author's best work.
Although a prequel/sequel is well underway, as of now, the origins and background of the cute and cuddly Gizmo are more or less a mystery.

While fans already know what happens when Mogwais get wet and fed after midnight, anything about Gizmo before he is discovered in the old man's shop is a complete mystery. Are Mogwais aliens, ancient creatures, some combination of the two? One can only speculate.
While a more in-depth version of Pennywise was presented in the sequel, it's still a convoluted mishmash of theory and mythology. Even in the book by Stephen King, the origins of the killer clown still venture on the vague side. It's not entirely an alien, though it might be a Lovecraftian horror that existed before time and space. There's just so much speculation in both the book and the movie that fans have taken to drawing conclusions themselves.
Brought to fans by the creator ofGremlins,The Holeis an underrated monster flick with some impressive visuals and seriously scary entities living in a gaping hole in a family's basement.

Known mainly as The Darkness, the hole itself is a sort of strange portal that manifests as its victim's greatest fear. While it is studied and documented by one of the film's characters, it's never truly explained, only feared.
"Giant evil gods..." This film perfectly blends parody and homage beautifully thanks to the writing chops of Joss Whedon, but it also ventures into Lovecraft territory with its mythology. Known as "The Ancient Ones," these elder gods are as mysterious and terrifying as the unholy legion of monsters that inhabit the facility that satisfies them. Represented by only a giant hand, these beings probably have the highest body count on the list.
Speaking of Lovecraftian territory,The Voidis what would happen if John Carpenter collaborated with the author himself. Aside from the ancient entity, the most defining presence in the film is the hooded legion of cultists that trap a host of victims inside an old hospital.

These guys are silent, mysterious, and lethaleverything one could want from a cyclopean cult worthy of a cosmic horror novel. The movie could stand by itself with the cult alone.
One of the most underrated and terrifying monster flicks out there,The Descentfeatures a nest of bat-like cave creatures lurking in a deep cave system deep in the Appalachian mountains. Not only are these things frightening, but their thirst for blood would make Dracula reach for a napkin. These things are the reason to be afraid of the dark.
If Pinhead and the rest of the cenobites decided to abandon the box and form a sadomasochistic motorcycle gang, they'd be the Skulls. This gang of leatherbound demons is not only physically intimidating, but they are summoned completely out of the darkness with little to no explanation. We know only that they feed on some psychedelic substance and are positively demonic.
