There is always an audible outcry when a new horror remake is announced to the public. People claim the industry lacks originality, but, unfortunately, remakes are what draw in the audiences these days. Original horror movies are either being sent straight to video-on-demand, or they're not pulling in numbers at the box office.

In a bid to encourage the industry to compromise between creativity and a need to remake a familiar title, these are ten horror movies that could actually benefit from a do-over.

This unheard-of post-Scream slasher is heavily inspired by W.W. Jacobs'short story "The Monkey's Paw." In it, a high school student receives a totem that grants its owner three wishes. Of course, there are consequences. In this case, however, the wishes incidentally summon a cloaked killer picking off the protagonist's classmates.

Anyone who has seenWishcraft knows it's better than it isn't. Sadly, it gets bogged down by a bloated runtime, lazy editing, dubious and dated dialogue, and a poorly aged underplot about sexual consent.

Rachel Talalay's1993 techno-horrorGhost in the Machine does not hold up when viewed through the eyes of an audience glued to their smartphones. It's an underrated thriller, but there's no denying the movie is a product of its time.

Now is the chance to take the story and apply some better special effects. Or, better yet, even take a more minimal and timeless approach that allows the E-terror within to feel genuinely creepy.

The late and great Tobe Hooper is best known for his iconic horror movies like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Funhouse. After the 1980s, though, Hooper was struggling to maintain the quality he had put out years before. Case in point is this 2000 creature feature simply calledCrocodile. In the movie, a group of American college students somehow encounter a giant crocodile while partying it up on a river boat. The mother croc then stalks them, trying to retrieve something they took from her.

As fun as this crocodilian slasher movie can be, it's drowned by poor CGI and an even poorer script.Crawlproved that crocodilians are scary again so why not a remake?

In an age where campfire stories have evolved into Creepypasta tales, a movie likeThe Bye Bye Man should have worked. It sates our curiosity for monsters that go bump in the night, bringing fear toeveryone. Instead, Stacy Title's 2017 movie just doesn't work on nearly every level.

Based onRobert Damon Schneck's "The Bridge to Body Island" in his book The President's Vampire,The Bye Bye Manconcerns a group of college students learning the origin of the film's sinister namesake.

The Bye Bye Man just needs a more solid cinematic vehicle.Then, he could become this generation's boogeyman.

By 1989, slashers were falling out of favor with many horror fans. Even the big wigs likeFriday the 13th could not bring in the money like before. So, it's no surprisePhantom of the Mall: Erics Revenge was unsuccessful. In ways, it's not a traditional slasher, and that almost works in its favor. However, it's outdone bysome poor choices in both story and direction.

In Phantom of the Mall: Erics Revenge, a newly opened mall is the setting for a young woman being stalked by a masked man. As it turns out, he doesn't wish to do her harm. Rather, he's out to hurt those in charge of building this new mall.

With killer dolls making a small comeback in horror thanks to Annabelle, Child's Play, and The Boy, it seems fitting to revisit one of the underseen movies in this subgenre.Pinocchio's Revenge is a straight-to-video film about a lawyer who brings home a ventriloquist doll that has a connection to a murder case she's working on. As expected, the doll comes to life and tries to kill both the mother and her child.

This is a very by-the-numbers horror movie. Although it has some tense moments and the doll's design is unnerving, if not silly, aPinocchio's Revengeremake may actually work in the right hands.

Rawhead Rex was overwhelmingly panned upon its initial release. The movie is based on the short story of the same name by Clive Barker, and he even wrote the script. Some find the movie to be dull, but a sizable criticism is the eponymous monster looks far too silly to ever take seriously.

InRawhead Rex, an American studying religious artifacts and in Ireland come across an unearthed column that releases an ancient monster.

Barker has expressed interest in directing a remake, but nothing hasmoved forwardas of now.

Anyone who has read Junji Ito's manga seriesTomie knows the first movie adaptation was hardly a patch on the original source material. In fact, it's amiddling measure of Ito's macabre brilliance. There have been several sequels, standalone or otherwise, and some have fared better than the first movie. However, none of them can match the manga in terms of grisliness and eldritch terror. The body horror of Tomie is still waiting to be perfected for the big screen. A live-action seriesis being produced by Alexandre Aja for Quibi as we speak.

Tomie is about an immortal succubus-like creature who resembles a beautiful and ageless teenage girl. She can regenerate her body even if she is dismembered. This leads to there being countless Tomies all across the world and, possibly, throughout time. Tomie's allure frequently leads others to crimes of passion.

ForJaws fans, the second sequel is a sore spot. It boasts some highly dubious plot elements and directorial choices that some might say spoiled the franchise. It was followed by Jaws: The Revenge, which was not a particularly well-liked movie either. In Jaws 3-D, an aquatic theme park is targeted by a massive great white shark.

WithThe Meg not at all winning the crown for the bestkiller shark movie in recent years, there's still time to rebootJaws. The idea of using a water amusement park as the venue isn't the worst either.

Some believeTales from the Darkside (1990) is the actual second sequel to George A. Romero's seminal horror anthologyCreepshow, but that's more of an opinion than fact. As much as fans would like it to be true, there is technically aCreepshow 3. The inept, in-name-only sequel has no connection to the other two films nor is it made by Romero.

With Shuder'sCreepshow series coming back for a second season, now would be a great time to reboot the film franchise with a legitimate third movie.
