Now that we're all spending way more time at home than usual, having new and interesting things to stream has become a critical part of daily life. But thankfully, between all the streaming services out there, the choices are virtually endless--it can even be a little overwhelming, especially if you're looking for some specific genres or subgenres to scratch a particular itch.

Don't you just hate it when you and your friends wind up chased through a sprawling forest by an ancient Norse deity? The Ritual is an eerie, atmospheric monster movie with stunning creature design, beautiful cinematography, and an absolutely haunting plot.

If you want something a little less horrifying and a bit more fun, you really can't go wrong with a classic. The first Tremors film launched the now-iconic horror-comedy franchise with all the campy, over-the-top energy you would expect from an early '90s Kevin Bacon romp. Learn to love the graboids all over again, and then continue down the rabbit hole for a while--a handful of the other Tremors films are streaming on Netflix as well.

One part bottle movie, one part family drama, The Monster tells the story of a troubled mother and her adolescent daughter as they find themselves trapped in a broken down car on a remote road in the middle of the night. And if that weren't already scary enough, they're being hunted by a monstrous predator lurking somewhere out in the woods.

Found footage cult classic Cloverfield takes a handheld look at the attack of a giant kaiju on New York City. It's tense and gritty with a perfect blend of tiny, personal moments and huge, skyscraper-smashing action with a creature that has now secured its place in the pantheon of horror favorites. Cloverfield went on to inspire an anthology-style franchise with two more entries, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox, both worth checking out if you're interested in uncovering some of the monstrous mysteries asked but not answered in the original.

Threading the needle between psychological drama and monster movie, The Babadook is an intimate, horrifically tense exploration of a mother and her troubled son as they're attacked by a creature from a children's book. Trust us, it's a lot scarier than it sounds.

The concept of A Quiet Place is basically exactly what it says on the tin--a world under attack by strange monsters who pounce on anything that makes noise. It follows a family doing their best to survive after the monster apocalypse--but, unfortunately, sometimes their best just isn't good enough. Its sequel, A Quiet Place 2, was recently delayed thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the original is streaming on Hulu, so you'll have plenty of time to prepare.

Caves are inherently scary places to begin with, but they get even scarier when you find yourself not only lost but stalked through the dark by swarms of flesh-eating creatures. The Descent is brutal, claustrophobic, and deeply terrifying--perfect for a night spent cooped up in your room.

Cleverly disguised as a typical Young Adult adventure story, I Am Not A Serial Killer takes a rapid turn for the bizarre as sociopathic teenager John begins to realize the truth about his eccentric, friendly neighbor, Bill Crowley (played by none other than Christopher Lloyd). This one is a monster movie for everyone who feels like they've seen everything the monster subgenre has to offer--we promise you haven't.

Norwegian found footage "mockumentary" Trollhunter is a dark fantasy about a group of people who hunt--you guessed it--trolls throughout Norway. With an absolutely pitch black sense of humor and some clever visual effects, Trollhunter is both fun to watch and deeply uncomfortable--in other words, a perfect monster movie.

Not to be confused with the Stephanie Meyer novel adaptation of the same name, The Host is a Korean monster movie by Oscar winner Bong Joon-Ho. Borrowing bits from kaiju classics like Godzilla, The Host is the story of a mutant squid-creature, created by a toxic chemical dump, attacking people along Seoul's Han River.
