Boulder sheriff's official: Sexual assault along Colo. 93 'out of a horror movie'

Seeking witnesses

Boulder County sheriff's detectives ask that anyone who may have seen a car and a SUV pulled over along the side of Colo. 93 just south of Boulder between 9 p.m. and midnight Sunday call 303-441-4917 or 800-222-TIPS (8477).

A woman who pulled over on Colo. 93 south of Boulder to look for a GPS device in her car late Sunday was forced into another vehicle at gunpoint by an unknown assailant who sexually assaulted her then left her on the side of the road, Boulder County sheriff's officials said Monday.

Detective Sgt. Brian Lindsey said investigators spent Monday searching for leads and have been unable to find any similar incidents in the Denver metro area recently.

"This type of crime is very unusual," Lindsey said. "It's very violent. It's almost something out of a horror movie."

The victim, who lives in Denver, told sheriff's officials she had been visiting friends in Boulder on Sunday night and got turned around while trying to get home. Around 10 p.m., she pulled over on 93 just south of the city limits to look for a GPS device she keeps in her car, investigators said.

Lindsey said the victim didn't notice the man until he was almost at her window. He initially offered to help, then pulled out a gun and directed the woman to get inside his vehicle, which was parked behind her car. He sexually assaulted her, officials said, and left her on the side of the road before driving off.

Sheriff's officials said the victim's description of the suspect is vague, but he is believed to be a white male. The suspect's vehicle is described as possibly a SUV, similar to a Jeep Cherokee. They believe the vehicle is dark-colored, possibly dark blue.

Detectives are looking for witnesses who may have seen a car and a SUV pulled over along the side of Colo. 93 between 9 p.m. and midnight Sunday just south of Boulder. Lindsey said it was very dark and sparsely populated in the area just south of Boulder city limits where the assault occurred.

"We think a couple of drivers passed by when this was happening, so we hope someone remembers driving past two cars parked on the side of the road and remembers something about it," Lindsey said.
