BREAKING: Scream relaunch to film in Wilmington this fall – StarNewsOnline.com

WILMINGTON The relaunch of the legendary horror movie franchise "Scream" has found a home in the Port City.

The fifth "Scream" film will shoot in Wilmington this fall once COVID-19 safety protocols are in place, according to a release from Spyglass Media Group, which is producing the film.

"We have been in discussions with Spyglass about Scream since last fall," Bill Vassar, executive vice president of EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, said Monday.

"It is their intention for the film to come here and it is our intention to make sure we can accommodate them. We are both looking forward to being partners in this project and we are want to see it happen ASAP. But we are still defining the safety procedures for film production, and thats not just us but the whole industry."

Additionally, Spyglass announced that David Arquette, who played Officer Dewey Riley in the franchises first four films, will return for the fifth installment. Neve Campbell, who played Sydney Prescott, has also said she has spoken with creators about returning.

Spyglass said it is in discussions with other franchise cast members to be part of the film.

The franchise follows Prescott, Riley and others as they fight to survive a slew of serial killers who have terrorized the residents of Woodsboro while wearing the famous Ghostface mask. The 1996 original is considered a masterpiece of the slasher film genre.

Plot details for the film, which is being called "Scream" and not "Scream 5," are being kept under wraps, but the film is considered a "relaunch" of the story. However, Arquette is expected to reprise his role.

"I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new," Arquette said in a statement. "Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Cravens legacy."

The new "Scream" will be the first without original director Wes Craven, who died in 2015. But it will have some of its original blood in executive producer Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first, second and fourth installments in the franchise.

This new film will be co-written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence will direct the project.

"Scream" marks yet another major horror franchise going into business with the local film industry. Last fall, "Halloween Kills," the latest in the Michael Myers films starring Jamie Lee Curtis, filmed in Wilmington.

It is due in theaters this October.

Williamson also produced the Russell Crowe-starring horror film "The Georgetown Project" in Wilmington last December. It does not yet have a release date.
