A Canberra man has been refused bail after allegedly confining his partner over several days and frightening her by sharpening an axe in a situation a prosecutor likened to "the plot of a horror movie".

Beau Bullock, 26, is charged with choking, confining and threatening to kill his partner over five days, before she sent a message to a friend asking for help.

Bullock appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday, after being arrested by police who went to the woman's aid on Tuesday night.

The woman told police Bullock had put screws in the doors and changed the locks, retaining two sets of keys for himself, although he gave her another set.

Court documents revealed she told police she had known Bullock for four years, but had only been in a relationship with him for 11 months.

She said he had become controlling and aggressive, causing her to fear for her safety.

The woman told police that earlier this month Bullock had tried to choke her as she lay on her bed.

She said during the most recent incident she made a doctor's appointment hoping to seek help, but Bullock had gone into the doctor's room with her.

The woman said she was scared she could not leave the house without being harmed, and she believed Bullock would use the axe to harm her.

The court documents also showed Bullock allegedly threatened to kill the woman, when she refused to come inside the house after the two had been out driving.

"When you read the statement of facts, it's terrible," prosecutor Chamil Wanagaranthe said.

"It almost reads like the plot of a horror movie she is clearly terrified of him."

The court statement showed police who went to the house seized an axe and saw the screw holes on the doors, although the screws had been removed.

Bullock's lawyer told the court he denied the allegations.

Magistrate Margaret Hunter said she was concerned the level of violence was escalating.

"In my view there's a significant risk of his reoffending," she said.

Bullock was refused bail and will appear in court again next month.
