'Chernobyl Diaries': A fangirl review

By Jill Kill

If you're looking for a good movie to see this Memorial Day weekend, here's a quick tip: "Chernobyl Diaries" isn't it.

I've been in the mood to see a great new horror movie for awhile, and unfortunately this American film, produced by Oren Peli ("Paranormal Activity"), was a terrible disappointment.

Admittedly, the premise is intriguing: A group of tourists hire a guide to take them to the Ukrainian city of Pripyat, where workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor once lived (After a fire and explosion in 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant leaked a catastrophic amount of radioactive contamination over the region).

With adventurers giving in to their morbid curiosity about an abandoned town near Chernobyl, the "extreme tourism" aspect is an intriguing setup. That said, this movie becomes lost after a mediocre beginning and quickly devolves into the worst kind of nonsensical horror movie ridiculousness. It's hazardous waste.

The audience I saw it with literally laughed and jeered throughout which, truthfully, made for a fun bonding experience. Nonetheless, save your money and avoid seeing this film.

If you want to hear more about how bad "Chernobyl Diaries" is and watch a re-enactment of one the scenes, enjoy the video and save yourself the ticket price.
