Creature Feature ‘The Wretched’ Has Now Topped the Drive-In Box Office Charts for 2 Weeks in a Row – Bloody Disgusting

Most movie theaters across the country have been shut down for a couple months now, but whats interesting about movie-going in 2020 is that drive-in theaters have been experiencing something of a wildly unexpected resurgence. Many drive-ins across the United States are currently open for business, offering up the movie theater experience from the comfort and safety of your own vehicle. Its something traditional theaters simply cant provide right now, and its because of these drive-in theaters that there are even still weekly box office numbers to report.

In addition to releasing the film on VOD, IFC Midnight also released Brettand Drew Pierces creature feature The Wretched (read Meagans review) at 12 drive-in theaters on May 1st, and the film expanded into 20 total drive-ins this past weekend. As reported by both Box Office Mojo and The Numbers, The Wretched has now been able to top the drive-in box office charts for two weeks in a row!

The Wretchedfollows a defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parents imminent divorce, who faces off with a thousand year-old witch who is living beneath the skin of the woman next door.

According to the charts found on those two sites, The Wretched has pulled in $158,686 at the drive-in thus far, and thats counting the $63,000 the horror movie made this past weekend. The films competitors at the drive-in these last couple weeks, all of which also come courtesy of IFC, dont even come close to the numbers The Wretched has been posting. And while its weird to think that weve reached a point where a film making $150,000 in two weeks at the box office is any cause for celebration, well, thats the point weve reached. With movie theaters across the country on lockdown right now, its pretty wild to still see a horror movie topping the box office charts. The more things change, the more they stay the same. And it seems Joe Bob was right. Perhaps the drive-in will never die.

For current drive-in listings, head over to WretchedMovie.com. The film is expected to expand into many more drive-in theaters in the coming weeks. On a related note, New York drive-ins were just today given the green light to start re-opening on May 15th.
