Director Tom Holland’s Horror Movies, Ranked Worst To Best – Screen Rant

Tom Holland has proven himself to be a formative director who really made his mark on the horror genre in the 80s, but its worth taking a look at all of his contributions and how they hold up.

Tom Holland isnt a name in horror that always gets thrown around, but hes made some very important films during his time in the industry. Even before Holland shifted over to directing he penned the scripts for some fantastic horror films like Psycho II, The Beast Within and the genre picture Cloak & Dagger. Hes a filmmaker that has a clear passion for horror and its easy to see why a number of his movies have gone on to have sequels and franchises due to the rich worlds and stories that he creates.

Hollands films were a dominant presence through the 1980s and he still made some interesting efforts in the 90s. However, even though Holland is still in the picture, his output has largely died off in more recent years. Hopefully Holland isnt completely done with horror, but until he puts out something new it feels like a fitting time to revisit Tom Hollands filmography and how his horror contributions hold up.

Its nice to have Tom Holland back in the directors chair with Rock, Paper, Scissors, but it feels like its practically a different filmmaker at work. The movie looks at a seemingly reformed serial killers ability to stay on the straight path as hes repeatedly tested by those around him. There are some decent ideas at work here as far as serial killer stories are concerned, but its such a bleak and nihilistic film overall.

Thinner may be a terrible movie, but its at least in the so bad its good category. Tom Holland adapts the Stephen King novel of the same name that looks at a mans rapid deterioration after he gets a curse placed on him. Thinner features some commendable special features and some especially absurd deaths, but it nearly feels like a parody of a horror film. Kings original story isnt the authors strongest work, but this is a far cry from Hollands better films.

Hollands The Temp veers more into the territory of suspenseful thriller than outright horror, but it still contains a respectable body count and enough trademarks of the genre to qualify. The Temp is Hollands contribution to the era of thrillers from the 90s that capitalized on vengeful, jilted women, like Basic Instinct or Disclosure. Lara Flynn Boyle makes for a satisfying femme fatale, but the films tone is a little too uneven and the finished product doesnt come together as well as Hollands other efforts.

After enough occasions where he was dissatisfied with the final product of some of his screenplays, Fright Night marks Tom Hollands directorial debut and its an incredibly strong first film. The movie tells a sprawling story about vampires that pairs together an unlikely duo who turn into one of the genres most memorable teams. Passionate performances, likable characters, and a love for the genre all help Fright Night soar and are why the quirky vampire film remains in the public consciousness.

Childs Play has grown into a massive franchise with a TV series on the way, but Tom Hollands simple, yet effective film helped put everyones favorite killer doll on the map. Childs Play looks at Andys simple mission to survive against his murderous toy. A film of this nature could easily be a disaster or just plain laughable, but Holland creates something truly frightening. The practical effects work in the film still holds up remarkably well, too.
