Fans Can Actually Visit These Horror Movie Filming Locations, Just In Time For Spooky Season – TheTravel

Horror movies have been filmed all across the country and these sets are particularly inviting to movie fans.

With spooky season (AKA any days following August 31st), it's time to break out the chilly-weather clothing, fire up Netflix, and seek out all the horror movies to watch through October 31st. Some horror fans are perfectly content living vicariously through the characters on the TV screen, and some will always look for just a bit more realism in their horror adventure. One way to do that is by visiting the locations where movies were filmed and, luckily, there are plenty of horror flicks out there with real-life movie sets.

Some of these movies were even inspired by the locations at which they were filmed, and while Hollywood does get a lot of credit for its man-made sets, the US is full of movie-worthy settings. For horror fans, having the chance to visit the place where a movie was filmed is the epitome of horror fandom.

It's no secret that many of Stephen King's novels take place - or are inspired by - New England, specifically a fictional place called Castle Rock. The Hulu series of the same name was inspired by many of these novels and even his movies seem to revolve around the chilling state of Maine. A haven for nature-lovers, Maine also quickly becomes the perfect setting for a horror story, with its sometimes stark, barren landscape, isolated towns, and remote stillness.

Those who have readItalready know that its setting takes place in Derry, but Bangor was the real-life setting for the new, two-part movie and the town in which Derry was inspired by. There are several locations that fans can find in Bangor that will look familiar from the new movies, including the Thomas Hill standpipe, The Barrens, and even the Gerald Winters Bookshop.

A marine-based horror story,Jawshas been the subject of much debate when it comes to shark paranoia but alas, this massive monster remains a fictional tale. The movie felt so realistic, though, that it made people question a shark's motives and whether humans could be on the menu (in short, the answer is: not likely). However, the main setting for the movie is what was truly disturbing - a popular coastal beach. The movie took placein the fictionallocation of Amity Island, New York (there is a Long Island, New York, which has had some recent close shark encounters), but was based out of Martha's Vineyard.

Nowadays, fans ofJawscan still visit the outdoor locations that were used in the movie, including Edgartown which was 'Amity,' the Chappy Ferry which was seen in the film, the American Legion Memorial Bridge where Brody runs to his older son after spotting Jaws, and Sengekontacket Pond, where the massive shark was seen circling Brody's oldest.

Perhaps one of the most well-known and beloved Halloween cult classics is the movieHalloween, in which the famed Michael Myers stalks an unsuspecting town before settling on Jamie Lee Curtis as his victim. The movie itself took place in the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois, but was filmed in Pasadena, California. The town is fairly recognizable from the scenes shot around town but most recognizable is Michael Myer's childhood home which, interestingly enough, is a doctor's office now.

The original house that the movie is mostly staged in is an actual address in Pasadena and while fans obviously can't get a close look at either, it's interesting to see the setting of one of the greatest slasher films in real life.

One of the most well-known film settings of any horror movie is undoubtedly that of The Shining. Estes Park, Colorado, is where a majority of the movie was filmed and it was The Stanley Hotel that became the infamous Overlook Hotel for the 1997 film. It's a real place and yes, guests can actually stay there and have just because of its horror movie fame. Not only was it the setting forThe Shining, but it was also the inspiration for King's novel version of the hotel.

However, for those who want to visit the hotels used in the original film from 1980 starring Jack Nicholson, they'll need to travel a bit further west to Oregon. The exterior shots of the hotel were filmed at Oregon's Timberland Lodge with outside scenes from Wyoming's Glacier National Park, and the interior scenes were filmed at the Ahwahnee Hotel. All three of the hotels are still operational for those who want to take the grandShiningtour.
