Filmmakers give inside look at horror movie being shot in Cheboygan

CHEBOYGAN COUNTY, MI (WPBN/WGTU) -- There is a house of horror in Cheboygan as crews start shooting again for a feature film called "Crepitus."

Director Haynze Whitmore is a Cheboygan native and thought it would be the perfect place for this terrifying tale.

A house near downtown Cheboygan was the one chosen to be the home of two girls who live with their abusive, alcoholic mother.

That won't be the the worst of their problems.

They are also haunted by a killer clown played by Bill Mosely, known from "The Devil's Rejects" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2."

Whitmore says he has always wanted to shoot a feature film in Cheboygan.

One of the benefits of shooting in smaller towns like this is the whole community really comes out to help you," said Lance Paul, the executive producer of the film. "Weve had locations, weve had amazing crew here that are just from locals that want to get hands on experience on the film and were getting great crew out of it.

Haynze Whitmore said growing up, he always saw inspiration around Cheboygan.

As a kid, Id always like look at all these little locations around here, like oh that would be a great location and if we could just get a camera and do whatever, Whitmore said.

Some of the film's actors say it's the scariest film they've been in yet.

Its definitely one of the most intense films Ive ever done, especially with children," said Eve Mauro, one of the actors.

At 12-years-old, it's not Chalet Brannan's first horror film.

I just dont like to watch them, said Brannan.

Caitlin Williams, a senior at Cheboygan High School, landed one of the film's lead roles. It's her first movie.

Its amazing," Williams said. "I think its an amazing opportunity, not only for me and the people in Cheboygan, but just the town in general to really get this town out here and for people to realize what a beautiful place it is.

The house where a lot of the story takes place is actually a local store that refurbishes old furniture.

Shooting of the movie is expected to be wrapped up on May 3, and the film's release will be some time next fall.
