New Line Cinema introduced the world to theFinal Destinationfranchise in 2000. In the original film, a group of high school teens played by Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, and Seann William Scott, manage to escape a horrific plane crash only to be hunted down by Death and killed in some of the most unimaginable ways.

James Wong directed the first film, which earned $112 million worldwide, according toThe Hollywood Reporter. Four sequels followed through 2011, grossing nearly $700 million for New Line. With each sequel, the deaths got more elaborate and gorier, too. Despite the stories getting more far-fetched as the movies progressed, fans appreciated the way the writers maintained the myology throughout each film.

A few days after star Tony Todd said theFinal Destinationseries was over and done with, New Line announced they would reboot the franchise with writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. Known for their work onSaw IVandSaw 3D: The Final Chapter, Final Destination fans were eager to learn more about the sixth installment in the franchise.

Though the sixth film has been reportedly called a reboot, Reddick doesnt think thats the right word to describe the forthcomingFinal Destinationfilm. He and producer Craig Perry explained that the sequel is going to be more of a canon in the world ofFinal Destination. [Reboot] makes it sound like theyre going to change everything, but its definitely aFinal Destinationmovie, Reddick explained toDigital Spy. Craig [Perry] is the master of coming up with crazy openings and set pieces. Hes told me a couple of things that happen in this one, and its going to be a lot of fun. Its not going feel like [a] cash-grabFinal Destinationfilm.

In March 2020, Perry said they were toying with the idea of telling the story in the world of first responders. From EMTs to firemen and police officers, these people deal with death on the front lines every day and make choices that can cause people to live or die, Perry explained.

We rely on their good judgment, expertise, and calm demeanor. So why not put those people in the nightmare situation where every choice can bring about life and death but now for themselves? First responders have proven they can handle anything in dealing with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but it would be interesting to see them handle the outrageous scenarios in a Final Destination flick.

By telling the story of Deaths unwavering thirst for revenge through the lens of first responders, the Final Destination creators will be exploring unchartered territory. In doing so, Perry said theyll be able to create some of the most unique deaths in the franchise including one that will change your perspective of revolving doors.

New Line Cinema has yet to set a release date for the next installment in the Final Destination franchise. Stay tuned to Showbiz Cheat Sheet for updates.
