On Tuesday afternoon, Coach took over the 47th Street Warehouse in New York City for the presentation of its men's and women'sFall/Winter 2020 collections. Models snaked their way through a maze-like runway setup as stars like Megan Thee Stallion, Michael B. Jordan, Snoh Allegra, and Naomi Osaka looked on.
Music was provided by the Coathangers who played covers of old hits by rock band Blondie. Lead singer Debbie Harrywould eventually make a cameo to perform her own hits as the models took their final walk. The colorful collection featured a collaboration with the Estate ofJean-Michel Basquiat. The legendary artist's work could be seen covered leather trench coats and sweaters. Hissisters and stepmother were in attendance. His niece, Jessica Kelly, was a model in the show.
Ahead of the runway presentation, Complex got the chance to sit down with Megan Thee Stallion. The Texas rapper discussed her relationship with the brand, evolving style, writing a horror movie script, and more. Check out the full chat below.
What has it been like working with Coach? It's like super epic because I've been wearing Coach since I was like in the second grade. My grandma always bought it. To see me rocking all this stuff now and to see my little picture on their little billboards everywhere. I'm like, "Oh my God, that's me." So yeah, it's super crazy.
You had that campaign debut back in November that was your first big campaign for them. What was that process like?I remember last year I literally had a show every single day, so we had to cancel something so I could make sure I could get it in. I remember flying into New York, doing the campaign, flying right back out the same night. And then I had to come back again the next day. It was insane, but I really wanted to do it and get it done. And everybody was super nice. Everybody on set was amazing.
You remember the first time you saw it?I think somebody sent it to me in a picture, they're like, "Megan, bitch, look," And I was like, "It's me." [laughs]
You're still very early on in your career. Did you ever think you would be doing this?I mean I always knew that I wanted to be an entertainer, but when I was little I didn't know exactly what it was that I wanted to do. I just knew I wanted to make people smile. I used to think I wanted to be a plastic surgeon. Like I'm going to make these ladies feel really good. And then I got older and I'm like, "Whoa. No." So I mean I got into music and then now I'm Megan Thee Stallion, and I'm still making ladiessmile.
What's your personal connection to Coach?I've just always loved Coach. I love the whole aesthetic, like the whole vibe, and the fact that it's been around all my life. To me it's just a prestigious brand. It's just something that's just always been there and will always be here.
At last year's show you met and you took a photo with Anna Wintour. What was that like for you? Do you remember your reaction? So Michael B. Jordan had his collection and he loves Naruto, so he mixed his flavor in with it. I had on a T-shirt. I can't remember who I had on. Dang, I'm so mad. But I remember looking at my picture going, "Wow, I had on a Naruto shirt sitting next to Anna Wintour." [laughs] And I'm such a big anime fan. So it was like a moment for us [anime fans]. It was amazing. Anna is like the queen, so it's like I'm in here. Anna likes me.
As your career is progressing, it seems like you're more open to wearing things that maybe you wouldn't have thought about wearing before.Definitely.
What are some of those things that you have experimented with that maybe you wouldn't have thought to wear in the past?So me being me, and me being from Texas, I never have on clothes. I always got on booty shorts and crop tops. So just even putting on more clothes is a big step for me. Today I have on a full trench, but it's because it's cold outside. I always fight with my stylist, EJ. He's always trying to get me to try something new. I'm always pushing back on him. I never want to try and let them. I like what I like.
I just like to be chilling, but he's like, "Megan, you can't be in a T-shirt everywhere you go. So let's do this." I'm like, "Damn you right." So I just let him do his thing sometimes. But a lot of times I have to tell him let's put a little sprinkle of my own stuff in there. Something's got to give. I don't know man. I'm just letting the fashion world do what it's going to do.
Last year when Complex talked to you, you mentioned youlove horror movies. You said laterthat you're in the process of writing a script.I'm still writing my script. I'm not going to say how soon it's coming but it's definitely coming, soon. Writing a movie is way more work than I thought it would be. As I keep going, I'm like, "Damn, maybe this doesn't make any sense. Maybe I should do some more research on this story." I know I can make up shit all day long, but I still want it to make sense because what I hate about scary movies is they get in and they get out. We see a killer killing people, but we don't know why hes killing people. We don't know where he came from. I have to tell you why my villain is the villain, and maybe you might feel sorry for my villain a little bit.
Like the Joker.Exactly. I love the Joker. I love villains. I love anti-heroes. I'm really trying to tell a good story, where you fall in love with all the characters.
Anything else that your fans can kind of look forward to in 2020 or that you're looking forward to?Yeah, my debut album is going to come out in 2020 I'm introducing a new persona called Suga. She's more sweet. She's a little more vulnerable. She's a fucking mess. But you know, we're going through it. But we getting through it.
