New Mutants Was Supposed to Have a Big Impact on X-Men Movies – Screen Rant

Fox'sThe New Mutantswas supposed to drastically impact futureX-Menmovies going forward. 20th Century Fox's run with the X-Men characters may soon be over, but there is still one more film in their series to be released:The New Mutants. Fox's lastX-Menouting is a horror-themed spin-off that will focus on a brand new set of characters rather than be another mainlineX-Menfilm. Many superheroes have been apart of the New Mutants team over the years, but Magik, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball, Mirage will be the main heroes in the upcoming film.

Fans have been waiting patiently forThe New Mutantsto release. The film was originally supposed to release in April 2018 but was delayed a number of times for various reasons. One of the reasons Fox claimedThe New Mutantswasbeing delayed was because of reshoots, but that got even more complicated once Disney bought Fox. The reshoots forThe New Mutantsnever actually happened, which means that director Josh Boone's original film will be screened in April.Boone's film would have changed theX-Menfranchise going forward, but that won't happen now.

Back in August 2017 when Screen Rant visited the set ofThe New Mutants, we got a chance to sit down with Boone to ask him about hisX-Menmovie. Boone revealed thatThe New Mutantswas pitched as a trilogy, with each film fitting into a different branch of the horror genre. Boone also explained that his film would still have an effect on the mainlineX-Menfilms, despite those characters not appearing inThe New Mutants. Boone's full quote from our set visit can beread below:

"When we went to go tell Fox we wanted to do this movie we made them a comic book, it was like a PDF that pitched them kind of a trilogy of films, each one's its own unique kind of horror movie, the first one's a supernatural horror movie, I won't say what the other two are, but they're horror movies but different horror movie each time. Oh yes, we're in the same universe, and there will be things that fans will be really excited about that will have repercussions in other movies and other parts of the X-Men world and all that. So it should be really cool! I'm excited!"

WhileThe New Mutantswill be the last film made by 20th Century Fox, there are rumors that this could be the mutants' introduction into the MCU.Marvel probably wants to start fresh with their version of the mutants, but ifThe New Mutantsdoes well enough at the box office, it's possible Boone could be hired to make another film in the MCU. It's also important to keep in mind that Kevin Feige has already confirmed that the X-Men are coming to the MCU, but they probably won't be fully introduced for a few more years.

While fans are finally getting afull-fledged horrorX-Menmovie, it will probably be the last one they see. It was reported last year thatDisney was unimpressed withThe New Mutants, so the House of Mouse probably isn't too keen on including horror movies in their Marvel Cinematic Universe. Feige recently revealed thatDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswon't actually be a horror movie, which was probably part of the reason why Scott Derrickson left the project. Marvel doesn't seemconfident enough to make a straight-up horror superhero flick, so fans can expectThe New Mutantsto not have a bigger impact on futureX-Menmovies.
