What Is the Horror Movie ‘Smile’ Based On? – We Got This Covered

Image via Paramount Pictures

Smile is a 2022 horror film about a therapist who is trailed by a sneering force that possesses her patients. The only people grinning more than Smiles antagonists are its producers, as the flick has grossed $137 million, an extravagant sum for horror.

Although Smile seems to have come out of nowhere to dominate the nightmare-ket, it is a faithful adaptation. Heres what inspired Hollywoods hottest horror.

Smile comes from a short film titled, Laura Hasnt Slept, which debuted in 2020. It stars Caitlin Stasey as a sleepless woman and Lew Temple as a therapist whom she seeks to rid her subconscious of a sinister smiling man. After it won the Special Jury Award at the South by Southwest film festival, director Parker Finn got the greenlight from Paramount to turn it into a feature. In 2021, the film was announced under the name Somethings Wrong with Rose with Sosie Bacon attached to star. It was retitled Smile and filmed with Bacon as Rose the therapist and the short films lead, Stasey, playing the lead patient.

The short film that inspired Smile is not available on any of the standard video platforms. In fact, it seems to be absent from the internet in any legal form. We can presume that Laura Hasnt Slept was suppressed by Paramount for Smiles release. Thankfully, a Redditor that appears to be Parker Finn revealed that the short will be included on the Smile Blu-ray. The 4K Blu-ray is set to be released on Dec. 13.

The Worst Boyfriends in Horror Movie History – The Mary Sue

Horror is full of bad boyfriends/husbands, but here are some especially vile ones. With lovers like these, who needs enemies? Just in time for your Halloween movie binges, we take a deep dive into the guys who prove to be waving the bloodiest of red flags. Spoilers for Halloween Ends, Hellraiser (2022), and Scream (2022), as well as a bunch of older horror movies (Rosemarys Baby, Christine, Edward Scissorhands, Scream 1996, Midsommar, The Invisible Man 2020).

TW: discussion of rape/sexual assault, unhealthy/abusive relationships, gaslighting, and other heavy topics. Proceed with caution. Some of the clips will feature violence and gore.

Possibly one of the earliest and most memorable bad boyfriends, Guy (John Cassavetes) is horrible in every way a husband can be. Literally, selling his wife to the Devil in exchange for a successful acting career?! Cannot get much worse than this. Even worse, he doesnt get any comeuppance whatsoever and is so blas about the whole horrifying experience.

Arnie (Keith Gordon) is a case of is it the evil magic or were they always like this deep down? Originally a sweet nerd, he goes through a Spiderman 3 change into a greaser jerk after he buys Christine, the Yandere car. For a good portion of the movie, theres a question of whether Christine or Arnie is the one committing the murders, as Christines windows are blacked out. But ultimately, Arnie is behind the wheel when he tries to kill his former best friend and former girlfriend, effectively choosing Christine over them.

The original Gaston character, Jim (Anthony Michael Hall) cannot handle the idea of his (ex)girlfriend falling in love with a monster. In response, he not only sets up Edward for multiple crimes for which Jim is to blame. Jim ultimately is responsible for Edward being unable to live in the normal world. (Though frankly, when its populated by people like him, who would want to?)

Its incredible how a man whose face we almost never see manages to be one of the most hateable antagonists in modern horror, but thats Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) for you. Watching Cecelia slit his throat is one of the most satisfying deaths of a horror antagonist to me.

I dont think I need to say much about this character, played by Jack Reynor, that hasnt already been said. Hes proof that sometimes the kindest thing you can do is break up with someone before you hurt them more than you have. Unfortunately, he doesnt and keeps trying to convince himself hes a nice guy for stringing along his mourning girlfriend and gaslighting her into thinking its her fault hes pulling away.

Billy (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu (Matthew Lillard) might be fun to watch, but theres no doubt they were terribly shitty boyfriends to their girlfriends. Stu targets his ex-girlfriend Casey for dumping him and ultimately seems okay with Billy killing Tatum, which is bad on its own. Billy is somehow worse for having killed his girlfriends mother, only to then decide that isnt enough and he also needs to punish Sidney by gaslighting her, tricking her into sleeping with him, and then trying to kill her and her dad. The newest Scream (2022) makes it even worse by revealing he had cheated on her enough that he got a fellow classmate pregnant.

Richie (Jack Quaid) is a weird case in that hes arguably a good boyfriend to his real girlfriend (fellow Ghostface killer Amber Freeman) but is a terrible boyfriend to Sam. The whole reason he was dating her was to frame her for the Ghostface killing spree in hopes of getting a new Stab movie made. Which is both pathetic and disturbing, showing the lengths he will go to make his fanfiction a reality.

Another character who literally started dating the final girl just so he could use her, Trevor (Drew Starkey) is horrible for not only his betrayal and manipulation of Riley but also for being willing to sick the Cenobites on unknowing victims for the sake of something as basic as money. Trevor is also probably a reference to Kirsty Cottons husband who tried to kill her for her inheritance, but that movie script was not originally going to be a Hellraiser movie and is not well regarded in the fandom, so I chose this Trevor.

Corey (Rohan Campbell) is actually a reference to an earlier character on this list, Christines Arnie Cunningham: A sweet but bullied nerd who slowly becomes more confident and more assholish as he is exposed to a malevolent force. Its made even worse by the fact that his romance with Allyson is barely a few days old when he goes through his heel change, which does a disservice to both of their characters. After going on a roaring rampage of revenge while dressed as the guy who killed both of his girlfriends parents, he tries to kill her grandmother and when that fails, he kills himself to frame Laurie in hopes of driving Allyson away. Thankfully, it doesnt work for long, and Allyson is ultimately able to fix her relationship with her grandmother.

Fright Fortnight: Parents, the Best Horror Film Youve Never Seen – Brig Newspaper

To me, there are four types of horror; firstly, theres the slasher film, then theres the psychological and comedic horror, then lastly theres the type of horror that is so disgusting that it will make you feel physically sick.

So, if youre looking for a horror film that perfectly deals with all fourId like to recommend the 1989 film Parents.

Parents has to be one of the most underrated horror films of all time. Directed by Bob Balaban, the movie has gone overlooked by audiences for decades despite, in my opinion, being a real treasure of 80s horror.

The movie stars Randy Quaid and Mary Beth Hurt as two seemingly normal parents. Their son however, played by Bryan Madorsky, doesnt quite fit the happy 1950s suburban family image.

Although, as the title suggests, this film doesnt follow the evil child horror stereotype and it is the Parents that are truly disturbing, which viewers will figure out quite early on.

Its probably not a spoiler to warn anyone planning on watching this that it does feature many scenes depicting cannibalism and depicts meat in the grossest way possible, so it probably isnt wise to watch this whilst youre having a meal- a mistake I made when I watched it for the first time.

Like I said, this film does all the different types of horror really well. Its suspenseful, its often repulsive, it can be darkly humorous and it ends with a classic slasher horror fight sequence. So theres really something for most people to enjoy- or to be squeamish at.

Another reason to watch would be the striking cinematography. The 50s setting gives the film a stylish yet unsettling vibe, complimented by vivid use of colours and shadows throughout. The black and white dream sequences are also visually ominous and many of the images will stay in your mind for quite a while afterwards.

But by far the best element of the film would be the performances. The breakout lead performance from Bryan Madorsky made the film for me. His innocent nature is endearing, while also giving the movie a darkly comedic feeling of dread, as he is unaware of whats happening.

But the scene stealers are the Parents themselves. Randy Quaid and Mary Beth Hurt are creepier than any of the iconic slasher villains, as they give off an almost sitcom charm, but with deeply disturbing and gross undertones.

So, if youre planning on watching a horror film that youve never seen before for your Halloween marathons, Id suggest this one.

Although its not my favourite horror film of all time, its definitely worth a watch as its severely overlooked and deserves more love for the disturbing performances, stylish production and creepy direction that satisfies all of the horror movie motifs that we enjoy watching this time of year.

Not To Be A Total Grinch, But ‘The Mean One’ Is Absolutely Not For Kids – Romper

Theres something about the snarky green Grinch that is so alluring. Is it his tendency to always cancel plans? His relatable holiday snark? His dedication to alone time? Kids love the vile one, too, with his hilarious jokes and sneaky ways and adorable dog, Max. But the latest installment of the classic is definitely not for kids XYZ Films The Mean One is an R-rated slasher/horror film that takes the vile one to a whole new level this December.

The Dr. Suess-created character first stole Christmas and hearts around the world in the 1957 book How The Grinch Stole Christmas! and the subsequent 1966 musical/short featuring the now-iconic Youre A Mean One, Mr. Grinch song by Thurl Ravenscroft. Jim Carreys live-action version in 2000 made fans see another side of this cuddly-as-a-cactus character one whose heart didnt shrink three sizes until he was laughed at and mistreated by the community and Benedict Cumberbatchs 2018 animated The Grinch made us laugh all over again with his misdeeds. But this latest iteration should only be streamed after the kids go to bed (and with all the Christmas lights turned on bright) because it is going to be scary.

Unlike previous adaptions of How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, The Mean One is a violent slasher parody, according to Deadline. The movie is directed by Steven LaMorte and stars David Howard Thornton (Terrifier 2), as the furry green, Santa-suit-wearing Mean One who lives on a mountain above Frazier Park. Cindy You-Know-Who is played by Krystle Martin (a stunt performer and coordinator). She returns to town to seek closure after her parents were literally butchered by The Mean One. Its bloody and grisly and for adults only.

As a passionate fan of seasonal horror, The Mean One is exactly the kind of film that lands on my personal nice list, said Alex Williams, XYZ Films manager of Acquisitions and Developments, per Deadline. This movie is a stunningly great time with a ferociously subversive turn from David Howard Thornton and XYZ Films is so proud to be bringing this soon-to-be iconic Christmas slasher to audiences this holiday season.

The Mean One will be released for free online on Dec. 15, just in time for the holiday season.

There is no trailer and no details yet about where it will be released, so youll have to keep your eyes peeled. Pro tip: use a 39-and-a-half-foot pole to keep your kids away from this horror flick.

Walking Dead: The Game 17+ – App Store

The story is good. There's no doubt in that. But the game was likely not made with the mobile platform in mind, resulting in confusing, clunky movement and camera controls. It's also a choice-heavy game with no option to save manually or skip cutscenes (many of which are unnecessary and lengthy). So it means if you were to alter the outcome of a choice, you often have to replay a good 10+ min of game, rewatching the characters engage in boring, mundane activities such as opening a door (every door-opening in this game has a long cutscene. For atmospheric reason I understand why, but they should only play once). Did I also say you are likely to get some dialogue options wrong? Not because you would regret your choice, but many dialogue choices do not reflect what your character would actually say. The choices are a short version of your character's often emotional, long response, and there were moments that I went "wait, I did not mean it that way! I did not know you'd say it like a jerk...guess I'll have to rewind again."The game would be much better if it were not so frustrating at times. I recommend buying the PC version, which at least has slightly better navigation.

When is the last episode of The Walking Dead? – Undead Walking

The Walking Dead has been airing on AMC since Halloween night, 2010. Viewers tuned in to the new zombie series, curious as to what it would be about. Fans of the comics were eager to see the on-screen translation, and people new to the fandom had no idea what to expect.

The series has gone on to spawn a fandom unlike any other and has aired three spinoff series, with three more in the works. TWD Family is more than just a group; it is a family. And that family consists of fans, cast, crew, artists, and anyone who enjoys this series and all it has created.

Here we are, twelve years later, and the series is quickly approaching its end. After 11 seasons and what will total up to 177 episodes, The Walking Dead will air its final episode on November 20, 2022.

The last episode of The Walking Dead series is the 24th episode of season 11, titled Rest in Peace. This is a nod to the final comic volume of the same title, which consists of issues187-193.

Showrunners have said that the final episodes arent going to set up any of the spinoffs but will bring this storyline to a close. So far, there have been several loose ends acknowledged, and several characters who have been lost have been remembered.

Talking Dead has announced that there will be a huge fan event for the last episode held on finale night in Los Angeles. More details are yet to come, but it has been stated that cast members, new and old, will be present.

I think Khary Payton, who plays Ezekiel, said it best when he said we need to treat the end like a celebration, that you dont get this far and not run across the finish line,If happiness can be covered in blood, this is the place. Lets do it.

Norman Reedus teases way different The Walking Dead spinoff in France – Winter is Coming

AMCs long-running zombie seriesThe Walking Deadis almost over, but after the finale airs in November, the franchise will continue to expand through various spinoffs. One of the most exciting follows Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) as he travels to Europe.

Currently, the spinoff is simply titled Daryl Dixon, which sounds a little on the nose. Of course, theres always the possibility that it could get changed; the title of Maggie and Negans spinoff was recently changed from Isle of the Dead to Dead City.

The reasoning for Daryls trip to France is currently under wraps. Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Reedus confirmed that Daryl arrives in France by ship. However, its not his choice to embark on the journey.Somehow I get put there, and I dont go there on my own free will, he teased. Sounds like hes captured. By who? Who wants him that badly to take him across the world? So many questions.

Reedus hinted at some of the locations in the series. Expect castles with huge walls, moats, and high vantage points. Castles are the perfect spots to hold out from zombies. Ive been out there location scouting and casting and everything for the last couple of months, Dixon said. Its epic. Castles, and moats of castles, its just crazy.

Expect the unexpected. If theres one thing The Walking Dead has been criticized for over and over, its the formulaic approach. The group enters an idyllic-looking community and joins them, only to later learn that all is not what it seems, resulting in a battle. We knew we wanted to make a show that went in the opposite direction, just because we didnt want to do the same thing, Reedus told Entertainment Weekly:

And its going to be way different. The storys way different. The characters are way different. Theres a different tone, theres different light, theres a different sound. Its a whole different vibe.

I very much welcome something new. A spinoff like this is the perfect chance to freshen up the franchise!

Daryl Dixonwill mark the first time a Walking Deadshow has been set in Europe, so its already going to be completely different. So far, weve seen the apocalypse in various U.S. states as well as a brief spell in Mexico in earlier seasons of Fear the Walking Dead.

There was one instance, however, when the franchise took us to France. It came during the post-credit scene of World Beyond, where Dr. Edwin Jenner (Noah Emmerich) appeared via video call. In the scene, a French scientist gets killed and almost instantly turns into a zombie. But she isnt just any zombie; shes much quicker and stronger than what we are used to. If that scene is anything to go by, Daryls got some tough times ahead.

The Walking Deadhas included its own variant zombies, too. The final season continues Sundays on AMC. Catch the series finale on November 20!

The Walking Dead: This is the Daryl Dixon we should have had all along – Undead Walking

The Walking Dead will soon end its run that has lasted 12 years. During that time, characters have come and gone, but two constants have been Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride). These two became fast friends as they experienced tragedy bonding due to their common backgrounds. They are fan favorites for sure, and as the series quickly approaches its conclusion, fans want the best for these two.

In season 11, part 3, viewers see a different Daryl Dixon than ever before. He has stepped up to become a leader you would never have expected from the man introduced in season 1, episode 2, Tell it to the Frogs. Gone is the wall he built around himself and the gruff, surly demeanor, and in its place is a strong man willing to die for those he loves.

During the first three episodes of the last eight, Daryl listens and thinks before sharing his thoughts on what is going on. His plan, in episode 1117, Lockdown, to send Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) into the Commonwealth while the others took on Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton) was a well-thought-out plan. He didnt decide to run headlong into a situation he was ill-equipped to handle on his own.

He also used great restraint in handling Eugene (Josh McDermitt) in episode 1119 when Eugene wanted to head out into the Commonwealth while the citizens and soldiers wanted his head for Sebastians (Teo Rapp-Olsson) death.

The sad part is this is the Daryl Dixon we should have gotten after he came back from looking for Rick (Andrew Lincoln). The mourning he experienced with Ricks loss had to be the worst thing hes experienced. This is an abuse victim who has never really been loved until he meets Rick, Carol, and the other survivors. And his abuse was brutal but losing a man who he considered a true brother had to break Daryl to the point that he almost didnt come back from.

But, once he realized Rick was truly gone and returned to the communities, that is when we should have seen this Daryl materialize. Now we only get a few episodes of this Daryl in the main series.

Sure, he will go on to the spinoff series and hopefully take this newfound persona with him. But this new Daryl could have been utilized for so much more in the flagship series storyline.
