Demian Bichir: ‘Right One’ is father-daughter love story with vampires – UPI News

NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Actor Demian Bichir says he sees Let The Right One In as more of a family drama than a vampire horror show.

Airing Sunday nights on Showtime, the series is inspired by the Swedish novel and film by the same name.

The TV version follows three families -- Mark (Bichir) and Eleanor Kane (Madison Taylor Baez); Naomi (Anika Noni Rose) and Isaiah Cole (Ian Foreman); and Claire (Grace Gummer) and Peter Logan (Jacob Buster).

The story starts when former superstar chef Mark and his daughter Eleanor, who was transformed into a vampire and locked into the age of 12 a decade ago, move into the apartment next door to single mom and New York Police Department detective Naomi and her adorable, but lonely son Isaiah.

Mark is determined to find a cure and restore humanity to his only child, but, in the meantime, he has to secure through often illegal means the blood she needs to drink to survive.

Elsewhere, scientist Claire is trying to save Peter, the brother she was told had been dead for years, but who, it turns out, was really just hiding after he became a vampire and was severely burned when his skin was exposed to the sun. Audiences quickly find out he has a mysterious connection to Eleanor, as well.

"It's a love story about what a father can do for his daughter, but it's also a love story of my neighbor Naomi and what she can do to keep her son from being bullied and keep him happy and productive and have a beautiful future," Bichir, 59, told UPI in a recent interview at New York Comic Con.

"It's the same thing with the Logan family. Everything they do, they do for love. And my best friend Zeke, played by Kevin Carroll -- this is a loving relationship. We are brothers. There is nothing you would not do to help them be safe and be OK."

Showrunner Andrew Hinderaker said he is a huge fan of the previous screen incarnation of Let the Right One In and was excited to explore its themes from a fresh angle.

"As terrifying as it was, as beautifully shot as it was, it was a really poignant love story," Hinderaker said.

"I really was deeply invested in this caretaker-vampire relationship, particularly to explore a parent whose child is addicted to blood and the intensity of that addiction, in this case, how destructive it could be, but also to write an homage to a parent's love for that child. My aspiration is that we create something that feels like the original novel and film, but it feels like its own thing."

Whenever the writers get stuck on scenes, Hinderaker urges them to go back to how deeply connected the characters are and how fiercely they protect one another.

"Once you remember that, then not only does it get brighter, but it gets darker, too. That, I think, is the essence of the show," he said.

Madison, who is 11, describes Eleanor as a "space nerd who loves astronomy, just a regular kid" until she becomes this supernatural creature forced to live in the shadows.

"I can't survive. I don't know how to fend for myself. Family plays a huge part in this world. Not only through love, but also for being there for each other," the actress said.

Moving to New York is intended to provide Eleanor and Mark the anonymity and stability they have been looking for all of these years.

"Looking for a home and just finding one place where we can stay and say that it is ours is definitely something that gives a lot of hope to Ellie," Madison said.

"It's also something Mark has been trying to do for a very long time, but, unfortunately, can't because we always end up on the verge of being caught, so I think staying here in New York is my hope that things will get better, my hope for a cure and I think that is what motivates Mark to get me fed and keep me surviving."

Hinderaker said there were myriad reasons to set the re-imagined version of Let the Right One In in contemporary New York City.

"I want to have 45 minutes to talk about how much I love New York City and I can talk about how it's so great narratively and Demian mentioned he's a chef and the world of food in New York City is one tiny thing, but, really fundamentally, it's like America and, in some ways, the world just smashed together," Hinderaker said.

"So, if what you're really trying to explore is how we treat each other -- whether we protect one another or prey upon one another -- you have this beautiful playground that embodies all of humanity that I think is really reflected in our cast, as well."

Bichir said he sees a parallel between Mark and Eleanor's dreams of a permanent home and the immigration crisis occurring in real life.

"I find this one of the greatest analogies to many different issues that we are experiencing right now, especially in the United States -- how finding your ground is the most important thing for any human being," said the actor, who was born in Mexico.

"The immigration phenomenon still is the greatest challenge on the planet. You see a parent holding their kid, fighting oceans, fighting deserts, crossing rivers in order to give them, provide them a better life," he added.

"Those are the bravest and those people are the new blood in any country that opens their arms to them. I don't want to pretend to be poetic or anything, but that's, to me, one of the biggest virtues of this series: we talk about many different things, if you pay attention."

Let the Right One In review vampire romance is equally charming and disturbing – The Guardian

For a novel less than 20 years old, John Ajvide Lindqvists Let he Right One In has spawned enough adaptations that its title now doubles as a guide: be careful, for not all versions of this Swedish horror romance are created equal.

The essential adaptation is the 2008 Swedish film, which introduced the wider world to the romance between Oskar, a lonely, bullied 12-year-old, and his new neighbour Eli, a centuries-old vampire in the body of a pre-teen girl.

Written by Lindqvist and directed by the film-maker Tomas Alfredson, its an eerie, tender watch, where love and murder are committed to warm the soul against the relentless Stockholm frost: the late film critic Roger Ebert lauded it as the best modern vampire movie. Then theres the remarkably reductive 2010 US remake, Let Me In; two separate play scripts; a comic prequel series denounced by Lindqvist; and, this year, a Showtime television series.

But Darlinghurst Theatre Companys production is among the right ones, a faithful adaptation (using Harry Potter and the Cursed Child playwright Jack Thornes script) that is charming and disturbing in equal measure. It centres in on a cold truth: mutual loneliness is a dark, dangerous footing for love, but sometimes that is the best that we can find.

Will McDonald, a highlight of Netflixs Heartbreak High reboot as eshay Ca$H, leads as Oskar, with a surprisingly robust Swedish accent, as the adaptation doesnt risk breaking the spell of its setting even if not all of the eight-person cast can maintain the accent through the more than two-hour-long play. (It works more often than it doesnt, though accidental veers into US or Slavic accents from the ensemble may distract some.) Newcomer Sebrina Thornton-Walker plays Eli, who prefers to not kill: instead, they have an arrangement with their familiar Hkan (Stephen Anderton), a middle-aged man who drugs then collects the blood of unsuspecting victims.

While innocent Swedes die, Eli and Oskar meet at night outside their apartment block in a delightfully awkward courtship. McDonald and Thornton-Walker, friends for years, have a chemistry that carries them through what could, with other actors, be the plays biggest problem: twentysomethings playing pre-teens. Thornton-Walkers modelesque stature befits Eli being centuries old while looking young, but McDonald has the real challenge. Oskar, in the film adaptations, was played by slightly unnerving child actors (Kre Hedebrant, Kodi Smit-McPhee). But 24-year-old McDonald is up to the task, his rounded shoulders, gangly body and uncontrolled expressions are painfully recognisable, without being a caricature of a sullen pre-teen. If anything, the awkwardness of a grown man gleefully eating lollies or playing in a sandlot only exaggerates how alienated Oskar is, and how easy it could be for him to become a proto-incel before meeting Eli.

And by casting Thornton-Walker, a trans woman, as Eli, the production stretches out the queer-as-in-strange allegory of their connection, previously only hinted at in other adaptations by Elis insistence that they are neither girl, boy or vampire, just Eli. These two characters find connection in shared weirdness and a capacity for great violence but is it a survival tactic or an irresistible, monstrous desire?

The director, Alexander Berlage, contrasts McDonald and Thornton-Walkers tender chemistry with a cold backdrop. The casts breath fogs up on stage, a visual trick that makes quite a few audience members use their coats as blankets, despite the Playhouses perfectly regulated temperature.

Harking back to the rotating stage he used in American Psycho, Berlage leans on set design to create tone. Violence looms long before Eli and Hkan arrive thanks to Isabel Hudson rendering the unnamed Swedish town from the snowcapped woods to Elis sun-shielded apartment as an industrial meatworks facility, complete with a small, windowed office space where much of the brutality occurs. Claustrophobic compared with the rest of the open stage, its a site where Oskars bullies Micke (Callan Colley) and Jonny (Eddie Orton) continually corner him, leaving little space for McDonald to breathe, let alone escape. Even the audio is stifling, as dialogue from the room is rerouted through speakers rather than coming directly from the actors, intentionally tinny and distant. At moments, the play is more terrifying than Alfredsons film, especially in scenes where McDonalds body is seemingly put under duress, with the theatre tricks not immediately obvious.

The composer, James Peter Brown, and the sound designer, Daniel Herten, are behind much of the plays tension and horror. Splashes of blood are accompanied by thrashing industrial techno and strobing lights, a jolt alongside the spacious, twinkling synths used to score Eli and Oskars gentle courtship. The deaths are wonderfully shocking but the true chills are in what people will do to feel a connection, whether that be Micke and Jonny bonding by relentlessly bullying Oskar, a familiar betraying their fellow humans, or a lonely boy falling in love with a vampire.

Heinz’s Tomato Blood Ketchup Is Back in 2022 – Eat This, Not That

If you've ever dressed as a bloody bride or as a vampire for Halloween (haven't we all?), then you know the struggle to find the perfect fake blood. It's got to be a precise color of red; it has to be inexpensive enough so you can douse yourself in it; and you should be able to easily wash it off before bed. As Halloween approaches, one food brand has embraced its own gory potential.

It's all about the ketchup. You may have been using ketchup for years as a Halloween costume aid, but Heinz finally made its likeness to blood official last year, when it released a special edition Tomato Blood Ketchup. The #1 ketchup-maker is bringing back the fun this year to keep its red sauce top of mind for anyone planning a scary costume. And the brand onboarded its very own vampire influencer to spread the word.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Toby, a vampire, converted to vegetarianism years ago to spare the necks of humans. Instead, he gorges on ketchup and is on a mission to inspire his fellow vampires to do the same.

"Being a vegetarian vampire and only eating Heinz Tomato Blood comes with a lot of misconceptions," said Toby, the 280-year-old Tomato Blood activist. "I hope that by issuing a PSA, vampires nationwide will consider that humans can be more than just food and give friendship a chance while enjoying a tasty alternative."

So if you don't have a costume for this year, feel free to dress up as Toby, or simply follow his lead and grab a bottle of the Tomato Bloodand you won't really need much else. "There are few nights more magical than Halloween, and for years, Heinz has helped people make memories by helping them transform into the spookiest versions of themselves," said Ashleigh Gibson, the brand director for Heinz. "We believe that if you have Heinz, you have a costume."

Heinz's Tomato Blood Ketchup is available at retailers nationwide starting this month.

The 2022 Braves were a shell of themselves in the day when compared to night – Battery Power

While I figure that not everybody is probably super interested in re-litigating the end of this season for the Atlanta Braves, for me its kind of like catharsis. Its also a bit of a weird feeling since the good times from their World Series win in 2021 are still fresh in my mind. Its also important to remember that with this elimination, there hasnt been a repeat champion in Major League Baseball since the New York Yankees won their third straight title in 2000. Thats why I was so adamant back at the beginning of the season to just enjoy the ride, since repeating in baseball is such a large task.

Either way, the Braves have a lot to be proud of this season. Winning 101 games and a divisional title is nothing to sneeze at, especially when it comes to the Braves being the type of franchise that places a lot of value in those type of seasons. When you combine this with the fact that the Braves have a ton of young talent committed to staying in Atlanta for the foreseeable future, its obvious that this is not the end of the line for the Braves. Theyre going to be in the Postseason/World Series conversation for many years going forward.

However, its time to talk about something that plagued the Braves this season and probably played a big role in how they were locked out. Now before I start this, Im going to say that the Philadelphia Phillies absolutely deserved to advance. Their pitching was stout and their hitting core did exactly what they were built to do this season. This team was built to mash, they did just that when it counted the most and they deserve to be playing for a trip to the World Series. With that being said, this seasons Braves may have tripped up in the NLDS because they share something in common with vampires: They are a shell of themselves when the sun is out.

So, the Braves won 101 games this season. 77 of those wins were games that MLB ruled as night games. There was only one team that had more wins at night than the Braves, and thats the Dodgers because of course its the Dodgers. So basic math means that the other 24 wins for the Braves came during the day. As it turns out, that was tied for the fewest day game wins in the National League with the Cincinnati Reds. Thats right: All but one team in the National League had more handshake lines during the day than the Braves did. For comparisons sake, the Braves won 88 games during their title-winning season last year and they somehow managed to win one more day game (25-21) in 2021 than they did in 2022 (24-27).

While Atlantas day game record on its own wasnt terrible, the way that they were losing these games was something to behold. The teams batting slash line took a precipitous dip in the day (.238/.310/.415) when compared to what they were doing at night (.260/.321/.457). The 2022 Braves during the day had a team wRC+ of 102. Thats not terrible as it was good for 15th in all of baseball for day games, but it was a massive drop from their 4th-place mark of 115 wRC+ at night.

Braves pitchers also saw a marked dip in results when the sun was out. Atlantas pitching staff sported a 3.81 ERA and a 3.61 FIP in the day. This was after going with a 3.30 ERA and league-best 3.39 FIP at night. Those may not seem like large discrepancies but its the difference between being an elite pitching corps and being a middle-of-the-road squad.

That perfectly describes the drop-off between the 2022 Braves at night and the 2022 Braves when they were playing under the beaming sun. At night, this was an elite team that could probably go toe-to-toe with any team in baseball. In the day, this was a mediocre team. So if you were one of those people who cringed when you saw that all of Atlantas scheduled NLDS games started during the day, you had pretty good reason to do so! This was a different team depending on whether the sun or moon was out and it loomed large during their final series of 2022.

Now, this is once again where I have to give props to the Phillies for getting the job done. As much as Ive talked about and weve watched how the Braves are a different team depending on what time the game starts, the Phillies were not exactly day game juggernauts, themselves. Philadelphia was only one game better than the Braves in day games (25-28) and as a matter of fact, the Phillies were worse all across the board in day games than the Braves were.

They had a higher day ERA (3.98), a higher day FIP (3.60), a worse team slash line (.246/.315/.396) and a lower team wRC+ (100) during the day. The point of this article is not to make excuses for the Braves since the Phillies themselves had just as rough of a time during the day as Atlanta did this season. They showed up for the NLDS while the Braves were a no-show for most of that series. Its as simple as that.

This would usually be the point in the article where I come up with some kind of solution going forward, but I feel like there really wouldnt be too much of a point in doing that. For all we know, this could end up being a blip on the radar and the Braves end up being day game monsters in 2023. Its also a problem that is really hard to fix from the outside looking in in any specific manner. Maybe they need to figure out a new way of preparing for afternoon games? I really have no clue what could be done to fix this, especially when its not like Im in the clubhouse watching what these guys are doing to get ready for day games compared to what happens before a night game.

I think the best way to approach this situation is honestly to shrug and just go Thats baseball! to yourself. This has also just been an insane Postseason in general and the Braves ended up being swept up in the chaos along with the Cardinals, Blue Jays, Mets and even the Dodgers and possibly the Yankees as well. Sometimes baseball makes sense, but a lot of the time it doesnt and this appears to be one of those cases where it really doesnt make sense. The 2022 Braves were a great team that came up very short of where they wanted to be in the end and theyre also proof that vampires never win in the end.

NYCC 22: Vampire Hunters and Witches at The Harvey Guillen Spotlight Panel! – Comics Beat

Harvey Guillen, best known as Guillermo on FXsWhat We Do In The Shadows, the TV series based on cult classic movie, flew into New York Comic Con for a solo spotlight panel on Friday morning. And I almost literally mean flew in. The actor was shooting the first episodes of season 5 ofWhat We Do In The Shadows in Los Angeles the night before, and as soon as shooting wrapped, hopped a red eye flight to New York City.

But there were no signs of jet lag or a lack of sleep when Harvey Guillen took the stage. He was a beaming ball of energy from the moment he took the stage. The solo spotlight panel at NYCC doubled as a recording of Guillens podcast, Behind the Shadows, which gives fans a behind the scenes look at What We Do In The Shadows. Unlike last years What We Do In the Shadows NYCC panel, todays panel focused less on Shadows and more on Guillens guest, Hocus Pocus 2 actress and Guillens Blue Beetle co-star, Belissa Escobar.Blue Beetleis due out in August of 2023.

Harvey asked Belissa how she got into acting. She responded, I knew I wanted to be an an actor when my friends and I would reenact episodes of Hannah Montana. Her first official acting role was in elementary school. She explained, My first play was in 5th grade in Willy Wonka: The Musical. I played Grandpa Joe. Harvey then went off on Grandpa Joe being bedridden and hopping out of bed when Charlie shows up with the Golden Ticket, and asked Belissa her opinion on Grandpa Joe. Belissa joked, Yeah, 5th grade me was like what a total bum. She then added, After that role, everyone realized singing was not my forte. She went on, saying I had two singing coaches. They were like, you should go see an ear, nose and throat doctor. Ouch! Belissa later when to a performing arts high school and credited Clown Class for her comedic and improv skills.

During the Q&A, a woman in the audience complimented Belissa on her Hocus Pocus 2 performance, saying she sounded like a real teenager. Belissa described her method as I thought about how when I was a teenager, everything was angst. Talking about her Hocus Pocus 2 role, Harvey Guillen told Belissa, Youre part of history now. To which Belissa responded, When you put it like that, its scary.

Besides interviewing Belissa Escobar, Harvey Guillen gave the audience some behind the scenes What We Do In The Shadows trivia too. He explained that the way that Laszlo (Matthew Berry) pronounces Manhattan, Manhatta, comes from learning it from the indigenous people who lived here when he first arrived. Harvey said, He pronounces it the way youre supposed to. Harvey also revealed that What We Do In The Shadows has been picked up for seasons 5 and 6. They already finished filming the first quarter of season 5 and just started filming the second quarter of the season the night before Harvey flew into New York to attend NYCC.

Finally, during the Q&A, Harvey Guillen answered what was probably the most contentious question of the morning, namely What is the best sweater. To which he quickly and confidently replied Sweater vest. You heard it here first! The sweater vest is making its sartorial comeback!

‘The Vampire Diaries’: Candice King Has Said ‘Goodbye to Caroline For the Last Time’ – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

It can be hard to say goodbye when an actor plays a character through multiple seasons of a show and maybe even spinoffs. It can be hard to say goodbye to someone you grew to know so well, even in a fictional world. Candice King of The Vampire Diaries says that is not a problem for her. She is saying goodbye to Caroline for good.

King playing the part of Caroline Forbes did not end with The Vampire Diaries. She also played the part in the spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies.

The Originals spinoff is set in New Orleans and focuses on the worlds first vampires. This thousand-year-old family of two brothers, Klaus and Elijah, and one sister, Rebekah, must work to retake their old stomping ground from a power-hungry protege. Kings character has a troubled relationship with Klaus.

Legacies, however, focuses on the twin daughters of Alaric Saltzman and the happenings at the Salvatore School, a school for gifted children with supernatural abilities. Caroline carried and delivered the twins after they were magically inserted in her womb when their mother died.

King has played the part of Caroline Forbes for 13 years, according to YouTube. King appeared on a Q&A panel for Comic Con in 2022. A fan in the audience asked, Were you happy with the way your characters storyline ended?King answered:

I feel like my storyline just ended on Legacies, which is crazy after 13 yearsso, it was really nice to kind of step back into Carolines shoes and say goodbye for the last time. I was very happy.

According to IMDb, King was born on May 13, 1987, as Candice Rene Accola in Houston, Texas, to an environmental engineer mother and a cardio-thoracic surgeon father. She grew up in Edgewood, Florida.

King loved to sing and released her debut album in December 2006. She even wrote 13 of the 14 tracks on the album. King toured as a backup singer for Miley Cyrus and her Best of Both Worlds Tour.

King made multiple guest appearances on several TV shows, including How I Met Your Mother, Supernatural, and Drop Dead Diva. She starred in the independent horror film, Deadgirl in 2009. That same year, King was cast as Caroline Forbes in The Vampire Diaries.

King met Joe King of The Fray in 2011. They got engaged in 2013 and married in 2014. King gained two step-children and then had two children of her own.

When the second spinoff, Legacies, was released some actors were more than happy to reprise their roles. Other iconic actors were not planning to come back, according to US Magazine.Kat Graham, who played Bonnie Bennett, was more than happy to move on from her witchy role. She said,

Anything is possible, but I will say I spent eight years playing this character and I said to my fans last year that I felt like that chapter is closed. I say that with absolute gratitude and appreciation, but I dont feel like reprising a character that was almost 10 years of my life. Im very grateful, but not interested.

Phoebe Tonkin took a small guest role as Hayley Marshall on The Vampire Diaries and then became a principal character on the spinoff, The Originals. When it came to Legacies, however, she didnt see a reprise possible. She said:

I think Hayleys story was properly explored both over the course of The Vampire Diaries and over the five seasons of Originals I think Legacies will have its own new adventures with its own new characters and storylines.

A Dracula where the women fight back – The Boston Globe

It wasnt real blood, of course. The spurting liquid a byproduct of a climactic battle between the persistently undead Count Dracula (Dustin Teuber) and his foes, who are determined to end his reign of terror once and for all more closely resembled Hawaiian Punch.

And I rather enjoyed the splash-zone experience, much as I rather enjoyed Michelle Aguillons deliberately over-the-top production, even though playwright Hamills larger ambitions for Dracula yield only mixed results.

From the publication of Stokers gothic novel in 1897 to F.W. Murnaus silent film Nosferatu (1922) to countless dramatizations on screen and stage since then, depictions of the Dracula story have overwhelmingly been told from the perspective of men.

So playwright Hamill is more than justified in thinking its high time the tale of the sanguinary Count was filtered through a feminist, #MeToo lens. Dracula, after all, is the ultimate sexual predator.

More broadly, Hamill wants us to think about the extent to which a monster resides in all of us especially men that can emerge at any moment. And heaven knows there are headlines aplenty that substantiate that view. Dracula has a few things to say about the gender power imbalance, in the 19th century and today, that dictate who has autonomy and who does not. So by all means, drive a stake through the heart of the patriarchy.

Still, those points could be made more effectively with characterizations and dialogue that are less on-the-nose, less intent on hitting the audience over the head, than we too often find in this Dracula.

As usual with Hamill, an actress who made her name as a dramatist with theatrical adaptations of literary works like Sense and Sensibility," comic elements are liberally sprinkled throughout Dracula." The word Shush," invoked several times throughout the play, is deployed to hilarious effect near the end.

But the production works best when it dives into the darkness, embracing the plays elements of straight-up horror. With blood-curdling screams, pounding noises, and sudden lighting shifts not to mention that whole neck-biting thing Aguillon smartly uses the tight confines of the Black Box theater at the Umbrella Arts Center to intensify the atmosphere of dread.

Audience members are grouped on both sides of a gray platform, so near to the action (I was seated just a few feet from the stage) that we get vividly close-up views of the villainous, hungry, or fearful expressions on the faces of the actors.

The cast is a generally capable one. Teuber conjures a suitable combination of charm, menace, and command as Dracula. The Count meets his match in a female (rather than the usual male) Dr. Van Helsing, a swaggering, relentless vampire hunter. Played to the hilt by Maria Hendricks in a cowboy hat and sharply pointed sticks strung across her chest like a bandolero, this Van Helsing is intent on rallying the other women to stand up to Dracula and any other male who tries to push them around.

Another standout is Sara Jones as madwoman Renfield, so fanatically devoted to Dracula that she scrawls Our Father in white chalk on the wall of her asylum cell one of the plays nods toward religious allegory (Dracula as an uncaring God, indifferent to the worshipers who are literally willing to give their lives to him). But again, Dracula doesnt reach the metaphysical heights its straining for.

Dominic Carter does his best with the character of Dr. George Seward, the head physician of the asylum, though Seward is a caricature of male pomposity, an endlessly mansplaining straw man set up only to be knocked down. Seward is engaged to Lucy Westenra (Gabrielle Hatcher), who becomes a target, then a victim, of Dracula.

Also drawn into the vampires sights are his stiffly formal estate agent, Jonathan Harker (Joseph Jude), whom Dracula plans to task with expanding his territory from Transylvania to a new hunting ground in London, and Harkers pregnant wife, Mina (Lisa San Pascual). The fate of Mina, the most innocent figure onstage, is very much left up in the air.

So if youre in the mood for a little seasonal spookiness, by all means check out this Dracula." But if you plan to sit in the front row, maybe think about wearing a poncho.
