Owners infuse Romanian history to Dracula-themed wine bar in downtown St. Pete The Crow’s Nest at USF St. Petersburg – The Crow’s Nest

By Ana Dominguez

After the Neamtu family fled Romania three years ago and moved to St. Petersburg, they noticed that the city was missing something they could truly relate to.

Their culture was being underrepresented in Pinellas County and the family knew that needed to change.

After buying the space formerly known as Wine Madonna, the Neamtus created Draculas Legacy, a castle-inspired bar that serves Romanian wine flights on 111 2nd Ave. NE.

Without hesitation, they knew they wanted a Dracula-themed bar due to the vampires legacy in their culture, originating from the Transylvania region in Romania.

For more than a century, Hollywood moviemakers have reinterpreted the origins of Dracula from the silent, unofficial adaptation of the Bram Stoker story, Nosferatu, to modern reimagining of vampire myths in feature films and television. Robert Neamtu, one of the owners of Draculas Legacy, explained that the real story of Dracula is based on Vlad the Impaler, the official ruler of Walachia, now part of modern Romania.

The Turks attacked Walachia and Vlad pushed them out by impaling them. There were two reasons behind it, so the enemies that came and tried to take over that area would get scared and would back off, and to keep his people safe, Neamtu said.

Because Vlad would cut off the fingers, arms and legs of all trespassers in plain sight of all the villagers, somehow it got back to Hollywood where they made the assumption that Vlad must have been inhuman and drinking the blood of his victims.

Although the Neamtu family knows the real origin of how the story of Dracula came about, they still partake in all the fun, incorporating Dracula-themed wine, such as vampire pinot noir, bloody cabernet and Dracula sparkling wine.

The owners of Draculas Legacy offer these vampiric drinks from around the world, while embracing their cultures history through traditional Romanian wines, which normally can only be found back home. These wines can be enjoyed by the glass or in a wine flight.

Something really interesting that we offer that most wine bars in general dont have would be the Romanian wine from the Feteasca Negara grape a dark-skinned grape variety native to the Republic of Moldova and Romania and the Feteasca Regala a white wine that is rich in lush aromas of peaches and apple, Neamtu said.

This bar meets the needs of every customer, not just the blood-drinkers.

Draculas Legacy also has non-alcoholic options like coffee, cider, tea, juice and an assortment of food options, including garlic knots, bruschetta, soup, salads and chocolate fondue for dessert.

The courtyard space in front of the establishment hosts an annual Halloween costume contest and has artists of different genres come out to play live music.

The Neamtu family is very grateful that last Halloween their business started to pick back up after the pandemic, since it hasnt always been easy for Draculas Legacy.

After being open for only two months, their business was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then, they have gone through many hardships, such as reconnecting with former customers, getting to know new ones and building a community where people from different backgrounds and cultures can come together.

Throughout the pandemic, the owners of Draculas Legacy reflected on how they could build their community back up and reconnect with customers again for the reopening of their bar. As a result, Draculas Legacy created a VIP program to help get their clientele involved.

Customers can pay a one-time fee of $100 and get a customized Draculas Legacy wine glass with a nickname engraved that is on display on their hanging wine rack for life, which is now two racks full.

The VIP program is fun; it always sparks conversations as to why my glass says Medicated Pete, said Marc Singer, a regular at Draculas Legacy.

As for students, the establishment offers a 10% discount and it is within walking distance from the St. Petersburg campus.

For most people, Halloween doesnt last longer than the month of October, but Draculas Legacy is open year-round, inviting everyone to keep the spooky spirit alive.

Cape Cod theater: Halloween season with ‘The Addams Family,’ Dracula – Cape Cod Times

Cape Cod Times| Cape Cod Times

October is the time for ghost stories, or vampire stories, or anything creepy and spooky and a few Cape Cod theaters are offering that those told live. Here are our reviewers' looks at Halloween-season productions: "The Vourdalak" from the Academy of Performing Arts in Orleans; "The Addams Family Musical" at Cape Cod Theatre Company/Harwich Junior Theatre; and Chatham Drama Guild's "Dracula." (And notice that one man is behind two of these scary choices...)

By Shannon Goheen

Written by: Bragan Thomas; directed by Thomas and Jonathan Ryder; presented by the Academy of Performing Arts

What its about: A British Lord is traveling by horseback to Bucharest when he gets caught in a serious thunderstorm. He takes refuge under a tree with others and meets a local who invites him to spend the night. He finds himself among a worrisome family and a beautiful woman who steals his heart. The family, however, has other horrific plans for him and his horse, for that matter. Hes clearly doomed but his overwhelming attraction to the woman blinds him to any possibility of escape.

See it or not: When the play ended, the child behind me said, That was so good! Its a spooky, creepy Halloween play, just right for the season and not so gory that children cant handle it. You can take the whole family except the very young and impressionable and can expect to feel a little anxious while you watch this one-hour play.

Highlight of the show: Zdenka (Vaida Armonaite) has Lord Nicholas Somervilles (Bragan Thomas) best interests at heart and she makes an effort to save him. His hesitation to leave her has serious consequences. You must choose death or life everlasting, she tells him. Armonaite and Thomas together blur the line between the two realities, our familiar world and a world with vampires. That fuzzy boundary is where the real discomfort happens in this play.

Fun fact: Thomas presented an early version of the script, based on a novella by Tolstoy, at the Academys 24-Hour theater festival in March. He says this fully staged world premiere too him three years and 34 drafts to produce. The theme fits in nicely with the Academys goal of performing live theater throughout this Halloween season and they are integrating parts of this play into their month-long Haunted House project.

Worth noting: The members of the small cast all offer their own turbulent touches to the action. Fred Carpenters Jorg is abusive and fearsome from the get-go and its clear that hes a bad egg. His wife Elizavet, played by Diane F. Parkes, doesnt like him nor should she because hes so nasty and she uses effective body language to let us know just what she thinks. Peter Eldridge is Jorgs brother Pyotr who spends most of his time whittling wooden stakes with a giant knife. His sinister habit of holding the sharp blade near Nicholas neck is unsettling. Mishka the vampire child is a role shared by Charlie Tobin and Toby Goers. On opening night, director Ryder stepped into the role of Gorcha, the man who turns the whole family into vampires. Its clear that the cast is having fun with this Halloween special and they together turn out an entertaining production.

One more thing: There is a small price to pay… for everlasting life, says Armonaite. Really? Its an unanswerable good/bad question - the prospect of living forever. Being unachievable, it remains a concept to grapple with that will endlessly pique the human psyche. Thomas The Vourdalak entertains and confounds. Its the best kind of creepy!

If you go: 2 p.m. Oct. 23, 6 p.m. Oct. 20 and 27 at the Academy Playhouse, 120 Main St., Orleans; $15; boxoffice@academyplayhouse.org, 508-255-1963, https://www.academyplayhouse.org/.

Written by:Book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa; directed by Nick Cearley; presented by Cape Cod Theatre Company/Harwich Junior Theatre.

What it's about: Heres the Addams family, in all their ghoulish glory, and just in time for the Halloween season (most certainly the Addams favorite time of the year). Theres Gomez (Anthony Teixeira), ever the debonair (if a bit charmingly wacky) leader of the clan. Then theres Morticia (Brittany Rolfs) the forever sultry siren at Gomezs side. Maryana Crawley is the somewhat sullen teenaged Wednesday, while Kelly Martin is the delightfully mischievous Pugsley. And who could forget Grandma (Trish LaRose) with her hunched back, wild hair and equally wild attitude about … well, everything.

Rounding out the household are John O. Fennell as the somewhat bumbling but always lovable Uncle Fester and Matt Gardner as the silent, enigmatic, 8-foot Lurch. (It would be fascinating to know exactly how the company managed to get Gardner up to that impressive height. And you have to wonder how Gardner became so sure-footed on the apparatus.)

Considering the above, it would almost be enough to see the Addams gathered together in their Home Sweet Mausoleum. And, in fact, when the play opens with a seemingly disembodied hand reaching through the curtain and the familiar music and finger-snapping in the background, the audience bursts into applause.

But theres actually a plot. Wednesday is contemplating marriage, and her intendeds family is from (horrors) Ohio. (Gomez comments that its a dreaded swing state.) The patriarch is the first to know about the impending union, and Wednesday asks that he keep the news to himself until after a dinner with the (of course) conservative Beinekes, boyfriend Lucas (Salvatore Guillermo Garcia), mom Alice (Jess Andra) and dad Mal (Ed Donovan). So Gomez is trapped like the moderate wing of the right, he says. He doesnt want to disappoint Wednesday, but has never lied to Morticia.

You know whats coming: Its literally a feast of hilarity, as the family introduces its favorite parlor game, Full Disclosure, to the staid Ohioans. In fact, sunshiney, rhyme-spouting Alice drinks a potion meant for Wednesday and launches into a sirens song, eventually draping herself along the dining table. Considering the chaos, will Wednesday and Lucas stay together? And how about Fester? Will his dream of a romance with the moon (thats right, the moon) ever be realized?

See it or not: Go for a deadly delightful trip back in time to those days in the 1960s when the original Addams Family graced TV screens on a weekly basis. But whatever your age, go for the sheer fun of the show. The one-liners alone especially those delivered by a deadpan Teixeira are worth the price of admission. When Alice asks to use the little girls room, he answers, We used to have one but we had to let them go. Priceless!

Highlight of the show: There is so much about this show thats outstanding that its hard to zero in. Excellent direction from Cearley means that the characters are all spot-on and scenes flow seamlessly from one to the next. And the theaters longtime musical director Robert Wilder and his behind-the scenes musicians provide deftly delightful accompaniment to the action, beginning with the opening, ensemble number, When Youre An Addams. The voices are almost universally strong and trained, with Rolfs and Crawleys standing out. And choreographer Suzette Hutchinson has ensured that numbers like the show opener (featuring a youthful ensemble of deceased Addams ancestors), and the sultry Tango de Amor performed by Rolfs and Teixeira, are perfect.

Interesting fact: The incomparable Jackie Coogan played Fester in the original TV series, with Christopher Lloyd assuming the role in the two feature films.

Worth noting: Set design by James P. Byrne and costumes by Robin McLaughlin are also fun and authentic, fueling the trip back in time.

One more thing: The intimate CCTC/HJT theater is perfectly suited to this trip into the fabulously freaky corridors of the Addams abode.

If you go: 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 30; Cape Cod Theatre Company/Harwich Junior Theatre, 105 Division St., West Harwich; $35, under 21 $18; 508-432.2002, https://capecodtheatrecompany.org/

Adapted for the stage: by Bragan Thomas; directed by Anna Marie Johansen, presented by the Chatham Drama Guild

What it's about: Were approaching the season of witches, werewolves and ghostly ghouls, so it must be time for a visit from the Count of Transylvania himself, along with his forever faithful servant Renfield. This version of the Dracula story begins far from the Carpathian Mountains in the library of an estate in North Yorkshire, England. Its 1931 and life is light and lovely for Lucy (Rachel Walman), the young mistress of the estate, whose greatest concern is deciding which of her many suitors to marry. (At the top of her list is fianc Arthur, played by Devin Massarky.) And life is just as carefree for her cousin Mina (Emily Entwisle) and her beau Jonathan (John Hanright), who happens to be a solicitor (lawyer). Also on the scene is Dr. Jack Seward (Mark Roderick), a physician who is experimenting with the reanimation of flesh at the local insane asylum. (Of course he is!)

But all is not well in the venerable halls of Whitby House. For one thing, Lucys mother, Lady Mary (Amanda Gordon), is hearing something scratch at her bedroom window and seeing dark eyes from the other side of the mirror. (Can the count be far behind?) Sure enough, Renfield (Bob Shire) shows up to cart Jonathan off to Transylvania to get Dracs signature (in blood no doubt) on the bottom line of a contract to buy an abbey in merry old England. Cut to Castle Dracula, where the Lord of the Vampires (Bragan Thomas) greets Jonathan. As the count plies his visitor with a super-deluxe wine from the Drac family cellars, we hear about the soon-inebriated travelers journey. When Drac says he is excited about moving to London where there are so many healthy people with fine blood, we know it cant be long before Jonathan is joining the count in quaffing another bright-red beverage.

See it or not: A visit with a vampire is often just the ticket in the season of All Hallows Eve. But this version sometimes suffers from an identity problem. At certain points on Thursdays opening night, the action and dialogue under Johansens direction were so melodramatic that there was laughter in the audience, as it appeared the play was a spoof. Then it became clear that no humor was intended. Still, Thomas succeeds in hitting the right, creepy note as Bram Stokers beast, often keeping the audience engaged.

Highlight of the show: The scene in Hotel Transylvania may be the best in the show. Hanright feigns drunkenness very effectively and there is undeniable tension and chemistry between him and Thomas. When Jonathan joins Team Drac just before intermission, its clear he and his coach will be seeking new recruits in Act II.

Interesting fact: Bela Lugosi was the first to play a film version of Count Dracula, in 1931. Other actors who followed his lead include Christopher Lee and Frank Langella.

Worth noting: The final scene is set in the subterranean catacombs of the London-based abbey the count owns at that point. Set designers Johansen and Roderick have created an interesting setting here, complete with ancient stone walls and a thick mist.

One more thing: There are some pretty graphic moments as actors feign blood- sucking. So this is probably not the best Halloween show for youngsters.

If you go: 7:30 p.m. Oct.16 at Chatham Drama Guild, 134 Crowell Road; tickets: $25 cabaret seating, $22 regular seating; 508-945-0510, http://www.chatdramaguild.org/

The millions of fans of Dracula and Harry Potter consist of all ages and varied enthusiasm, ranging from a curious reader or leisure cinema observer to seriously devoted academic scholars. However, followers of each universe have been chiefly segregated rarely mingling apart from an occasional culture convention, dominated by Star Wars, Star Trek, and Marvel heroes groupies. But Stoker and Rowling readers have a lot in common because Count Dracula and Lord Voldemort have much in common. These two internationally acclaimed bestselling novels possess a remarkable kinship.

Prepare to be delightfully surprised to discover that the godfather of all vampires and the infamous dark wizard share a deep character bond that goes far beyond the title monster. Be intrigued to uncover what a coffin and a horcrux share or to dig further to unearth that the often-overlooked scars which Bram Stoker wrote of in Victorian England are just as significant as those described by J.K. Rowling in the modern era. Indeed, it cannot be mere coincidence that Dracula is born in 1897 and 100 years later, Harry is too.

A Tale of Two Villains is a love letter to both sets of fans paying homage to two superb authors and their extraordinary respective works, setting both masterpieces on pedestals, side by side for the first time, exploring their similar themes, unique parallelism, and mystical symbolism. The Vampire and Its Cultural History Exponent – Exponent

Dr. Stanley and Dr. Gillota present in LAE Faculty Forum

Dr. Adam Stanley, Professor of History, presented on the history of vampires as cultural phenomena in European history on Oct. 5 as part of the College of Liberal Arts and Education Faculty Forum series. Dr. David Gillota, Associate Professor of English, responded to Dr. Stanleys presentations with a brief overview of vampire imagery in film.

Dr. Hilton Kelly, Dean of LAE, introduced the event by sharing an anecdote of some of his research history. He concluded, The very function of the faculty forum is to provide a space for faculty to share ideas that have haunted them to present the intellectual puzzle that they are grappling with.

The intellectual puzzle of vampires in literature and in culture began to haunt Dr. Stanley during the pandemic, during which he read Bram Stokers Dracula.

Dr. Stanley was interested, in particular, with how the undead came alive, how was it that this imagery of the vampire as a specific creature emerged, developed and evolved in the European cultural imagination.

He noted, too, that this timeline of development mainly happened in the 18th and 19th century, culminating in 1897 with the publication of Dracula by Bram Stoker.

The idea of the vampire began in the Eastern European cultures, showing up as proto-vampires, as Dr. Stanley coined, in Slavic words like upyr, oupir, vepyr, vepir, which all described a reanimated corpse that tormented living creatures and, somehow, took their blood.

At this time, as early as the 14th or 15th century, the rules of the myth of the proto-vampires were not solidified like they are today. As the proto-vampire myths broadened their geographical range into the larger European mind, people attempted to explore the nature of the vampire.

Natural philosophers were having their heyday coming out of the Scientific Revolution where they had made so many different advances and were rooted in nature. So scientific thinkers were determined to seek and understand these tales, not as being of supernatural origin but on the terms of natural phenomenon.

When the scientific community could not rationalize the existence of vampires, the task moved to religious philosophers. This was a daunting task. Christian religious philosophers, for instance, had to decipher how Jesus Christ had died and risen from the dead in a dissimilar fashion than a vampire had died and risen from the dead.

These debates continued and created a cultural footprint that historians can still observe and measure today. The first Encyclopedia, published in the 1750s, and serving as a compendium of collective knowledge, includes an entry of vampires.

In this period of the 1700s, gothic writing styles began to explode in popularity. This genre sought to integrate fantastical elements (like vampires), darkness and the macabre into realistic elements of medieval or current times, culture, technology and progress.

The codified rules of vampires started showing up more consistently in the 1800s with Verney the Vampire, Carmilla and finally Dracula. Readership and viewership of theatrical adaptions propelled the vampire myth further towards the general understanding of the rules of vampires.

Technological advances in the 1900s allowed for movie-goers to watch a different form of live-action depiction of the now-solidified myth of the vampire. Two prominent depictions that paved the way for cultural understanding were Nosferatu and Bela Lugosis Dracula. Here, the modern dichotomy of the gross and monstruous vampire and the handsome and alluring vampire arose.

The myth of the vampire is, much like its subject, not dead. In perfect reflection of vampires, vampire-centric media continues to undergo cycles of death and rebirth. Recently, media like What We Do In The Shadows have reshaped the general rules of vampires away from the serious, monstruous, alluring, or seductive creatures to joking and sometimes incompetent creatures.

I have travelled oceans of time to find you

Bram Stokers 1897 novelDraculais the biggest selling book of all time apart from The Bible. And Francis Ford CoppolasBram Stokers Draculais certainly the most lavish cinematic rendition of the definitive vampire story. Coppola goes all out, combining wonderfully inventive, non-computer generated set design, Oscar winning special FX makeup and lavish costumes to create a romantic, erotic, gothic horror that deliciously earns its 18 certificate. Starring Gary Oldman in a truly iconic performance as the ancient lovesick vampire, alongside Keanu Reeves (Jonathan Harker), Winona Ryder (Mina Harker) and Anthony Hopkins as the deranged Van Helsing,Dracula, celebrating its 30thanniversary, is the perfect movie to help kick off this years Halloween Horrorthon!

When you lose someone you love, they never really leave you. They just move into a special place in your heart.

Frankenweenieis a stop-motion animated film by visionary director Tim Burton; his homage to the story of Frankenstein and other classic monster movies. It is also a remake of his own short film of the same name, concerning an oddball loner, Victor Frankenstein, and his beloved dog Sparky, who is reanimated after a fatal accident claims his life.Frankenweeniefeatures Burtons individualistic trademark elements of combining a strong, gothic-horror aesthetic with a heartfelt, tender and frequently funny childrens horror story its macabre, fun and super spooky. His films are meticulously designed and crafted, andFrankenweenieis no different, rendered in gloriously stylish black and white.

A tragic tale of romance, passion, and a murder most foul!

The second in the Halloween Horrorthon Family Double-Bill,The Corpse Brideis another beautifully macabre, dark and fantastical world: a funny and whimsical model-animated feature film directed by Tim Burton. When Victor (Johnny Depp), due to pre-wedding jitters, accidentally places his wedding ring on an old, wizened tree branch, he brings to life the Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter) and must step into her undead world to figure out exactly what he wants most.

One can only imagine what it must have been like to visit the cinema in 1922, during the early years of silent movies, to witness one of the first horror films of all time. This Horrorthon will celebrate the 100thanniversary ofNosferatu, F.W. Murnaus German Expressionistic interpretation of Count Dracula (renamed Count Orlok for the German audience and iconically played by the menacing Max Schreck), with a live piano accompaniment orchestrated in the cinema by Olivier Award-winning composer and conductor, Terry Davies. This is sure to be a seriously unique Halloween experience!

Man is the warmest place to hide

John CarpentersThe Thingis a remake of the 1951 Howard Hawks B-movieThe Thing From Another World. It is an innovative and intense, beautifully made creature feature whodunnit set in Antarctica, and it is also Corin Hardys favourite movie of all time. It stars charismatic, grizzled Kurt Russell as Macready, a helicopter pilot who is working with a team of researchers when they discover a parasitic organism buried under the ice. The film features some incredible performances from its many ensemble character actors and explores themes of paranoia and trust as each of the men fall victim to the terrifying human-assimilating monster hiding within them. The special effects, make-up and creature FX (by young genius Rob Bottin) were ground-breaking in 1982 and are still a benchmark in the history of practical FX and creature design. If you havent seenThe Thingon the big screen before, you are in for a truly monstrous treat as we celebrate its 40thanniversary.

Theyre here

Released the same year asThe Thing, director Tobe Hoopers terrifying (and fun) supernatural shockerPoltergeisttook an all-American middle-class family home setting, made famous by the likes of Steven Spielberg, and haunted it with a nightmarish visitation in the guise of an invisible and malignant paranormal entity. In fact, the film was produced by Spielberg and his production company Amblin, who together with films likeJaws,Indiana Jones,Close Encounters Of The 3rdKindandE.T.(also released in 1982 what a year!), managed to maintain a delicious recipe that combined a thrilling cinematic rollercoaster ride with elements of horror, and in never more potent a concoction than here. Celebrating its 40thanniversary, Poltergeistis made to be seen in the cinema the perfect movie to close this years Halloween Horrorthon!

Across the weekend, The Picture House Restaurant will be hosting the Horrorthon Bar, with spooky specials including Corins own delicious pumpkin soup and creepy cocktails. There are also free popcorn for punters wearing fancy dress, and the best costume wins a Picture House voucher. If youve never caught these classics on the big screen previously, nows your chance!

A monster calls: why the horror universe is an idea whose time has come – The Guardian

Horror has been a staple of the movie business since its inception. People love to be scared, and Hollywood studios have wisely capitalised on this. There are many companies that have built their business, and their reputation, on horror films: cool-kid studio A24 are the newest in the game, with Ti Wests trilogy of sweaty slashers X, Pearl and MaXXXine, the upcoming third film.

Horror universes may seem like a new phenomenon but in fact horror films kicked the whole universe concept off, decades before superhero-led multi-platform series and films. Specifically, they started with Universal and its classic monsters series. Universal was associated with horror from the early days, when they accidentally hit the jackpot in 1931 with their versions of two literary properties, Bram Stokers Dracula and Mary Shelleys Frankenstein. The now classic adaptations by Tod Browning and James Whale, respectively, were cash cows that helped keep Universal afloat during the depression. They were joined by The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933) and The Wolf Man (1941). Subsequent films were an interchangeable picknmix of ghouls; from the moment Frankensteins monster met the Wolfman in 1943s imaginatively titled Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, Universal mixed and matched their creatures to maximise box-office potential.

However, this diluted the monsters fearsomeness, with their appearances becoming more comedic than frightening as the years went by. The 1934 Hays Code ban on brutality and possible gruesomeness made actual horror all but disappear from American screens, and the monsters that had once terrified became old-fashioned. Oversaturation killed the monster.

Operating parallel to Universal was the now defunct RKO Films, which released more than 140 genre films between 1929 and 1956. The studio is mostly remembered for the array of classy horror pictures produced by Val Lewton, such as Cat People (1942), I Walked With a Zombie (1943) and The Seventh Victim (1943). Lewton was a fan of suggestion and shadow-play rather than outright monsters. His movies have influenced film-makers in the genre ever since, but they never quite acquired icon status.

It was the British production company Hammer that revitalised the monster and perfected a formula of gothic, violent and eroticised film-making coincidentally, using the same two public-domain novels that had saved Universal. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) introduced a brutal, borderline-gory new take on Shelleys creature; a year later came Dracula, made by the same team of director Terence Fisher and stars Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, with Lee intentionally playing a much more overtly sexual take on the vampire. The success of these two films launched a franchise for each monster, establishing a signature style for Hammer horror fare, and the longstanding on-screen collaboration of Cushing and Lee.

More recently, Universal Studios had another shot at trying to reinvigorate its horror universe. In the mid-2010s they launched the star-studded Dark Universe, announcing Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man, Javier Bardem as Frankensteins Monster, Russell Crowe as Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde, Sofia Boutella as the Mummy and Tom Cruise as, conveniently, a new character that was bound to have a lot of very impressive stunts. Despite this marketing hubbub, only one film was released, 2017s The Mummy, which was entombed under the weight of negative reviews, disappointing box office and rumours of creative control battles between director Alex Kurtzman and Cruise. The Dark Universe was dead on arrival, leaving behind two lonely tweets.

The slack was taken up by independent production outfit Blumhouse, who, through their 10-year first-look deal with Universal, successfully reinvented The Invisible Man in 2020 as a tech-rich story of domestic abuse. Blumhouse had already hit it big with the 2015 found-footage haunter Paranormal Activity, which supposedly became the most profitable movie ever made and spawned a franchise of eight further films. Blumhouse was also responsible for two more original franchises, a rare achievement in the past couple of decades: political slasher The Purge and the haunted house series Insidious. In 2017, their film Get Out established a bold new voice in the genre in Jordan Peele and spawned endless think pieces about elevated horror as well as acting as a major cultural reset.

Blumhouse has become shorthand for modern horror in the same way that Hammer became synonymous with British horror. Meanwhile, A24, which turns 10 this year, made their mark on the genre in 2015 with Robert Eggers lauded The Witch before cementing it with Ari Asters horror family drama Hereditary in 2018.

The first generation of monsters Dracula, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, Frankensteins monster would become cornerstones of the horror genre, bigger than any single adaptation, performance or film. Their impact is still being felt and it is only a matter of time until we see if Blumhouse or A24 have given birth to a new generation.

Anna Bogutskaya is co-lead programmer of In Dreams Are Monsters, which runs at venues across the UK from 17 October to 31 December. For more details click here.
