Anna Faris Never Thought She Would ‘End Up in Comedy’ – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Anna Faris made audiences laugh during her time on the comedy Mom. She played the character Christy on the show for seven years. Heres why Faris says she never thought she would have a career in comedy.

Faris says she started getting recognized during college. Someone recognized her from a training video she was in. My first taste of fame was when I was 19, says Faris in her book, Unqualified. I was walking across the University of Washington campus and this girl came up to me and excitedly said, I just got hired at Red Robin and youre in the training video!

Faris says she played a hostess in the Red Robin training video. A Red Robin employee even recognized her years later when she went to eat there with her husband at the time, Chris Pratt.

In her book, Faris says she never thought she would end up in comedy. It might be hard to believe, but the actor never thought she was funny. I never expected to end up in comedy, wrote Faris. My family maintains that I was a funny kid, but I remember myself at least in public, as quite and serious. Funny thoughts were always in the back of my head, but I never said them out loud because it was way too terrifying.

Faris also says she was not the class clown when she was younger. She was afraid to be too loud or draw attention to herself because she was fearful of being made fun of.

I couldnt stand the thought of ridicule from my classmates, wrote Faris. There was nothing scarier to me than the idea of other kids making fun of me, so I was never the class clown. I was never outspoken. I suppressed a lot. As a result, ending up in comedy was a huge surprise, and Im still not sure if I embraced it as my thing.

Faris big break was in the 2000 film Scary Movie. She says it was a huge step in her career.

Though I acted before Scary Movie, landing that role felt like going straight from a high school baseball team to the majors, wrote Faris. She says the movie helped hone her acting skills. She reveals comedy acting isnt all fun and games. When it comes down to technique, it takes a lot of practice. The physicality of comedy actinglearning how to fall, for exampleis taxing, she wrote.

The House Bunny star also says she never worked that hard in her life before. I went from being a lazy college stoner to working 15-hour days where things were actually expected of me. That was a great wake-up call. Faris says she understood what it meant to work hard after joining the Scary Movie cast.

Anna Faris Is Ashamed of Doing This After She Became Famous – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Anna Faris is best known for her appearances in Mom and The House Bunny. Heres what she says shes embarrassed about doing after she became famous.

Faris says Scary Movie changed her life. After playing the role of Cindy Campbell, she was suddenly famous, and she was now trying to navigate life as a celebrity. Unfortunately, Faris says she let fame get to her head.

After the movie came out, I returned to blond (Cindy Campbell was a brunette), so I didnt get noticed in public very often, wrote Faris in her book Unqualified. A couple of times people thought I was Britney Spears, which was flattering. But even though I wasnt consistently being spotted, Ill admit I had a few ugly celebrity moments.

Faris admits she had moments she isnt proud of. One example is the time she went to a bowling alley with her family. She says she had an interaction with an employee that made her act in a way shes not proud of.

The worst of it came over Christmas 2002, when I was 26. I went with my brother and cousins to a bowling alley near my parents place in Washington and, after a couple of hours hanging out at the bar, the manager cut me off. Id only had two beers and wasnt especially drunk, and I got annoyed, which I think was fair, except that it provoked me to utter that very hideous phrase: Dont you know who I am?

Faris says her behavior resulted in her getting kicked out of the bowling alley. She didnt know, or care, who I was, and I cant say I blame her, wrote Faris.

Faris says she thought about the person she was becoming after that incident. I felt such shamenot for getting kicked out of the bowling alley bar but for uttering those words, wrote Faris. Had I really become that gross? Was I really the person who was drunk on her own ego? And what had I done, really? The Hot Chick?

The next day was rough for Faris. She says she woke up feeling embarrassed about what she had done. She didnt like the person she was becoming. The celebrity life was a tough adjustment for her.

I could hardly recognize myself. What kind of self-important person utters that phrase? Im just so glad that we didnt yet live in a world where everyone had their iPhone in hand at all times. There was no social media or viral videos.

In that regard, I got lucky. But I didnt know, in that moment, to be thankful that Facebook didnt exist yet. Instead, I kept thinking of how disappointed and mortified my parents would have been if they had heard me say that kind of thing. That knowledge haunted me, and I was ashamed.

Why the nightmare in-laws dynamic is ripe for horror – SYFY WIRE

Meeting the parents for the first time conjures up a variety of nightmarishly clichd scenarios, from the over-protective father to the clingy mother. There are plenty of romantic comedies dedicated to this familial dynamic, often centering on the initial encounter, like Meet the Parents, or a matrimony-focused plot, like Father of the Bride and My Big Fat Greek Wedding. These situations are predicated on cringe-worthy moments and interactions between two families whose ancestral branches are about to merge.

Yet it isn't only mid-'00s comedy vehicles starring Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez bringing the proverbial Monster-in-Law to the film table. Conflict stemming from introducing an "outsider" to a tight-knit unit is a relatable premise, and as with comedy, horror thrives with the awkwardly familiar. And while there are fewer in-law-focused titles in the scary annals, it is ripe for this type of setup, and filmmakers have utilized this to advantage. This week, Charlie Kaufman's adaptation of Iain Reid's psychological horror I'm Thinking of Ending Things is out on Netflix and involves an unsettling trip to the middle of nowhere. To celebrate this arrival, we're going to check in with the extended families that have plagued unsuspecting romantic partners.

Two recent notable scary movies exploring this setting are Get Out and Ready or Not. In both cases, a wealthy white family is harboring a deep dark secret from their child's beau. Whether you are marrying someone or are waiting to take the next step, this kind of surprise is never welcome. Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and Rose (Allison Williams) have been dating for a few months before she takes him to her parents' rural home for this inaugural visit, whereas Grace (Samara Weaving) is meeting the Le Domas clan on her wedding day.

At the start of Get Out, Chris asks Rose if her parents know he is Black. His concern stems from the fact that Rose has told him that he is the first Black guy she has dated later on, we find out this is far from the case and Chris doesn't want to "get chased off the lawn with a shotgun." This scene is meant to put him at ease, while also setting up his girlfriend as someone the audience can trust. Because this is horror, we know the film is built on a foundation of terror, but for the third-act twist to work effectively, Rose has to look like an ally exempt from the nefarious body-snatching scheme.

They are not his soon-to-be legal in-laws, as marriage is never suggested, but there is a welcoming atmosphere when Chris arrives at the isolated estate that doesn't match up with his concerns. In fact, Richard Armitage (Bradley Whitford) is overcompensating in the way his daughter said he would be yes, he would've voted for Obama again if he could've. It is far more cringey than menacing, but something is unsettling about the people they employ to tend to the grounds and their house beyond the Black servant stereotype.

Horror characters often make decisions based on what will propel the plot forward, regardless of how dumb it might seem. Chris never drops his guard, and he is always aware that something isn't quite right. Unfortunately, it is unreasonable to suggest he could've predicted exactly what the Armitage clan and their friends have in store even if his best friend has been suggesting outlandish plots that might befall him. Little does he know that Walter (Marcus Henderson) and Georgina (Betty Gabriel) are a horrifying combination of family members and Rose's exes.

Director Jordan Peele took inspiration from Rosemary's Baby when writing Get Out, which also depicts seemingly normal people harboring an awful secret. Neighbors Minnie (Ruth Gordon) and Roman Castevet (Sidney Blackmer) aren't blood relations to Rosemary (Mia Farrow) and her husband Guy Woodhouse (John Cassavetes), but still, they act like overbearing in-laws as the unsettling horror progresses. The vested interest they have in Rosemary's unborn child reads like eager grandparents dishing out outdated advice; however, their preoccupation is far more sinister than Rosemary could ever imagine much like Chris discovering Rose's true motives when she finally "finds" the keys.

A deal with the devil also underscores the troubling world Grace (Samara Weaving) marries into at the start of Ready or Not. Again, weddings are the popular destination of romantic comedy settings, but there is plenty about this occasion that is potent for horror. The business of board games is incredibly profitable for the Le Domas clan, as evidenced by the palatial mansion the wedding takes place at. It is far too late before Grace discovers they had a helping hand from a supernatural source, which requires that new family members play a game as a welcoming initiation. Rather than consummate the marriage in the traditional sense, Alex (Mark O'Brien) and his new bride are beckoned to another ceremony. The bizarre ritual kicks off with Grace drawing a card from the Le Bail puzzle box that will decide the game solidifying her Le Domas family status. Quirky traditions are hardly rare, so Grace takes this whole endeavor with amusement rather than strife.

Unfortunately for Grace, she draws the one card that will end in her death (if the game goes to plan). This very unorthodox version of hide-and-seek includes an extra bloody factor because when the bride is found, she will be killed. Early in the movie, we find out that Grace grew up in foster care and has been anticipating joining Mark and his clan. If someone hadexplained the rules before she said yes,it is unlikely they would've made it down the aisle. This eye-opening experience will ensure she doesn't make the same mistake twice.

Nightmare in-law stories run rampant in horror, from passive-aggressive comments to full-blown fights. Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has had a tough time of it in the Scream franchise when it comes to relationships and those targeting her from blood relations to boyfriends. In Scream 2, Billy's (Skeet Ulrich) mother masquerades as a local reporter, Debbie Salt (Laurie Metcalf), while orchestrating and committing some of the attacks on Sidney and her friends. Intent on getting revenge for her dead son, Debbie is a nightmare mother-in-law without Sid even realizing it. She dodged a bullet in more ways than one.

Manipulative stepmothers are at the heart of TV movies too, with titles such as Killer-in-Law and the forgotten Gwyneth Paltrow/Jessica Lange 1998 vehicleHush. The latter takes the age-old controlling and manipulative trope to the extreme. Lange plays Martha Baring, whohas already blamed her husband's death on her son, Jackson (Johnathon Schaech) when he was just 7 years old. In the present, she has convinced Jackson and his wife Helen (Paltrow) to live with her on the family farm.

Leaning into what now feels like an antiquated narrative, Martha goes to drastic lengths to ensure her son stays loyal, including trying to break up his marriage and inducing Helen's labor oh, and trying to kill her too. Thankfully, this decade's depictions have been far more nuanced.

Toni Colette hits a recent trifecta of in-law movies culminating with I Am Thinking of Ending Things, each of which has taken a very different approach to extended family. Knives Out much like Get Out and Ready or Not is centered on a wealthy family playing out their unusual games and traditions. Less horror and more whodunit, Knives Out features a colorful collection of nightmare individuals who are pretty much only concerned with what is in it for them. Playing a Gwyneth Paltrow-type lifestyle brand businesswoman, Colette is an in-law without a husband to support her.

In Hereditary, she is the one at the heart of the story, and it is her family that suffers because of her mother's supernatural beliefs and practices. Mothers-in-law often get maligned unfairly, but Steve (Gabriel Byrne) has just cause to be angry at least, he would if he weren't dead. Even though she is deceased, his mother-in-law rips a hole through his entire family, leaving bloodshed and fiery misery in her wake.

You don't get to choose your own family, which also extends to some of the in-laws you might acquire through romantic relationships. If they ask you to play a game or visit for the weekend, maybe ask a few more questions before leaping in feet first. You never know what they might be hiding in the basement or whichdemons they have done a deal with.

Despite What You May Have Heard, Film ‘Cuties’ Is A Thoughtful Exploration Of Adolescent Pressures – WBUR

You probably didnt hear much about Cuties when Mamouna Doucour won Best Director in the World Cinema Dramatic competition at this past Januarys Sundance Film Festival. I didnt, and I was there. (Despite recent diversity initiatives, the festivals attention remains mostly focused on American indies in the main competition, with foreign language films still exiled to sidebar categories.) Too bad, because its quite an accomplished debut, inspired by the directors own experiences growing up poor in Paris as the daughter of Senegalese immigrants.

The film follows an 11-year-old Muslim girl who falls in with a fast crowd, acting out and pushing back against her strict, religious upbringing. Its a thoughtful exploration of adolescent pressures in a hypersexualized society. But chances are if youve read anything about Cuties lately, its been for entirely different reasons.

The film which starts streaming on NetflixSept 9 takes its title from a troupe of tween dancers who confound their elders with queasy routines full of twerking, hair-flips and other suggestive stuff thats these days only socially acceptable during a Super Bowl halftime show. Their climactic performance is deliberately disconcerting and (spoiler) ends in tears, like if the finale of Little Miss Sunshine had been played for horror instead of laughs. A couple of weeks ago, Netflix rather stupidly used a still from this scene with the scantily clad girls striking sultry poses as the basis of a promotional poster, bringing down a rain of hellfire from all corners of the internet that resulted in death threats for the director and targeted harassment campaigns against defenders of the film. The streaming service quickly apologized and modified their marketing, to little avail. Once outrage goes viral like this, you cant put the toothpaste back in the tube top.

The only motivation of those who would produce such a film as Cuties is to sexualize children and to fuel the appetites of those who would feed on the sexualization of children, says a statement from something called the Parents Television Council. A Change.org petition originally demanding that the movie be removed from the streaming service on which it had not yet premiered (the text has since been amended) garnered over 600,000 signatures. Sight unseen, Cuties has become the bte noire of countless QAnon types and like-minded keyboard crusaders in our current Satanic Panic 2.0 of lunatic conspiracy theories about child sex trafficking rings, with its Black, female, French Senegalese director frequently referred to as another Hollywood pedo. (Its getting pretty crazy out there, folks. Last month a lovely acquaintance Id always assumed was sane started insisting on Facebook that Tom Hanks became a Greek citizen to escape prosecution for his role in Pizzagate.)

Im reasonably sure that most of these folks who are so angry about a movie they havent even watched would never willingly sit through a subtitled film in the first place especially one featuring so many cast members of color. And thats an awful shame because, despite some slight missteps well get to later, Cuties is a serious film that inspires conversations we really should be having right now about the world in which our young girls are growing up. Its refreshingly frank about class, religion and burgeoning sexuality in ways mainstream American movies would never dare. And who can blame them, given all thats happened to this one over the past couple weeks? (It probably goes without saying that Cuties opened in France last month to wide acclaim and zero controversy.)

Fathia Youssouf Abdillahi stars as young Amy Diop, who recently moved to a Parisian housing project with her mother and two baby brothers. The master bedroom has been locked off because her father has taken a second wife in Senegal, who will soon be arriving for a lavish marriage ceremony, banishing Amys mom to one of the childrens rooms. Life is stifling in this tiny apartment. Doucour shoots in widescreen cinemascope but cramps the characters into frames-within-frames, always walled off by obstructed views through doorways and windows. Then one day, downstairs in the laundry room, Amy discovers freedom. Well actually, its just Angelica (Medina El Aidi), a bespectacled dynamo dancing up a storm while ironing her hair. It's the first shot in the movie in which theres any room to breathe, and Angelica spins and flings her way around every inch of it.

Most of the movie chronicles Amys attempts to curry favor with Angelica and her gang of so-called Cuties back-sassing bad girls who strike freeze-frame flash mobs in the schoolyard to drive their teachers crazy and shake their groove things around the projects all afternoon. They talk dirty without really knowing what theyre talking about one of the less worldly gals mistakes a condom for a balloon and blows it up pretending to be precocious according to whatever theyve seen most recently on social media. Amy knows this is all raunchy and wrong yet it feels so invigorating and alive compared to the dutiful drudgery in which her mother and miserable aunt toil subserviently, every choice already made for them by men we never meet.

When I was your age I was already engaged, scolds Amys old-world auntie, who in a sly bit of casting is played by Mbissine Thrse Diop, star of Ousmane Sembnes seminal 1966 Black Girl. Our heroine swipes her older male cousins cell phone, and before long shes taking duckface selfies in the moonlight, intoxicated by the attention of strangers online. Its here that Doucour begins to tread on tricky ground with, I think, extraordinary sensitivity. Amy starts wearing one of her little brothers T-shirts as a crop-top, and the movie quite delicately toggles between her newfound empowerment at finally being looked at by boys and the shame she feels after being objectified. Sexuality can be a scary, complicated thing when youre young and its only gotten a thousand times messier thanks to the internet. Cuties could easily have become either a cautionary afterschool special or an irreverent, anti-religious screed, but instead its a rare movie that understands the profound ambivalence of adolescence. Liberation brings its own discontents, and power balances are always in flux.

Sometimes it stumbles. Doucour includes a strange, magic realist tangent in which the traditional formal dress Amys supposed to wear at her fathers wedding seems to be endowed with supernatural powers, occasionally knocking on the closet door to interrupt conversations, and its fabric appears to start menstruating when she does. (Nope. No idea.) The final shot is a great way to end a movie but Im not sure its a great way to end this movie, considering all thats come before. Yet for every such slip, theres a wonderful scene like one in which Amy having recently been ridiculed by her friends for having a flat butt hides under her hijab during a prayer service, surreptitiously watching a tawdry twerking video on her phone. Afterward, she studies the well-rounded rear ends of her mother and the other women at the mosque, a knowing smile spreading wide across her face.

The film actually has a lot in common with last summers uproarious Good Boys, a sort of Superbad junior about three naive sixth-graders bluffing their way through assorted adult situations. The R-rated comedy was a modest hit without inspiring much in the way of condemnation, probably in part because theyre boys, and it feels like there's less at stake than there is in Cuties. Doucour is asking us to think long and hard about the kind of behavior our young girls are being taught to emulate, and who theyre really performing for. But these are tough conversations I worry a lot of people won't want to have right now, especially when it's so much easier to just judge a film by its poster.

Cuties starts streaming on Netflix this Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Which Brother Is Richer: Marlon Wayans Or Damon Wayans? – TheThings

The Wayans brothers are some of the wealthiest actors in Hollywood, with most of them having landed their big break in the 90s, ranging from stand-up comedy to breakthrough roles on the big screen.

By 1995, Marlon Wayans and his brother Shawn Wayans landed their very own sitcom titled The Wayans Bros, which was so successful, it ran for a whopping four years and spanned five seasons before coming to an end in 1999.

But even though the show had come to an end, this was only the beginning for Marlon, who has since gone on to produce movies such as Scary Movie and Little Man while his older brother Damon Wayans was riding high off the success of his role on In Living Color.

Damon has been just as successful as Marlon, fronting numerous roles on TV shows and movies, but which one of these talented actors has amassed a higher net worth?

Damon Wayans is reportedly worth $35 million thanks to his many TV appearances on shows In Living Color and My Wife and Kids, which ran from 2001 to 2005, resulting in 123 episodes.

Other shows hes been featured in include The Underground, In Living Color - where he starred in 90 episodes for 11 years - and his own sitcom, Damon, which unfortunately only lasted for one season before getting canceled for poor ratings.

RELATED:Does Solange Get Along With Beyonces Husband Jay-Z After Their Infamous Met Gala Altercation?

While his sitcom didnt perform as well as Marlons show, Damon also had a decent run on the big screen, starring alongside Adam Sandler in the 1996 comedy crime Bulletproof, The Great White Hype, and Last Action Hero.

Damon also held production and writing credits on shows such as Waynehead and Happy Endings, a show which just so happens to star his son Damon Wayans Jr.

His recent work included a lengthy run on the FOX action crime series Lethal Weapon, which spanned three seasons before the actor complained that he was getting too old to be working 16-hour days on set while battling diabetes.

He strongly about his decision to move on, even though FOX was very much interested in renting the show for another season.

Well, this is more of an announcement but I'm going to be quitting the show in December after we finish the initial 13, he explained.

"So I really don't know what they're planning, but that's what I'm planning. I'm a 58-year-old diabetic and I'm working 16-hour days.

It's hard for me to play this loving, supportive father, husband and friend on TV and be the guy in life that's telling everybody, "I can't, I've got to work.'

Damon hasnt worked on any projects since leaving Lethal Weapon.

His younger brother, Marlon, on the other hand, hasnt slowed down one bit since his career took off in the mid-90s.

Just like Damon, the famous actor took it upon himself to launch his own production company, Workaholics Entertainment, very early on in his career, which worked out well because some of his self-produced films became blockbuster hits, subsequently earning Marlon a huge chunk of money thanks to its success at the box office.

Some of his notable work as a producer include movies such as Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2, White Chicks, Little Man, and A Haunted House.

Workaholics Entertainments content has earned over $1 billion to date.

In 1995, he and his brother Shawn Wayans enjoyed a successful run with their hit series The Wayans Bros, which quite literally turned both stars into household names. Marlon also helped produce all 101 episodes while also contributing to the writing process for all five seasons.

He was the funnyman alongside Eddie Murphy in 2007s Norbit and most recently helmed another TV shows, titled Marlon, in 2017.

In the last few years, the father-of-two has also worked with Netflix to create original content for the streaming giant such as Sextuplets and Naked.

Its unclear what sort of a contract he holds with the platform, but considering how Netflix is no stranger to spending the big bucks for its shows, its fair to assume that Marlon has made a substantial amount for his partnership with the firm.

In a 2014 interview with Lamplight Review, the 48-year-old explained how a lot of production companies had stopped financing African-American movies, which consequently led him to develop his own production company where he could produce, write and star in films he felt would fair well with his target demographic.

This franchise came out of [the fact that] Hollywood stopped making a lot of African-American movies, and they werent putting that many black stars in movies, he said.

And I was just like alright, I wanna create something that I can do low-budget, out-of-pocket, and just bring something to the studio system to be distributed. I wanna take a chance.

Marlon Wayans has since amassed a net worth of $40 million.

There are still plenty of things we can safely do, we just need to take precautions to protect ourselves and those around us, which from time to time, might mean passing on an event or activity if those precautions cant be followed, she says.

Maintaining at least six feet from other people is key, and for times when that isnt possible, wearing a face mask is crucial. And if you havent already caught on, hand sanitizer and hand washing will continue to be the coolest trends of the season.

Dr. Vyas shares some insight, advice and modifications for a safe fall.

Parents and kids alike are wondering about Halloween this year. But how do you handle trick-or-treating, costumes and passing out candy in the middle of a global pandemic?

Your city will determine if trick-or-treating is happening or not, says Dr. Vyas. If it is, then its really about deciding as a family what youre comfortable with and how youll protect yourself and those around you. If your city has determined that trick-or-treating will be canceled, everyone will need to respect that rule as well.

Parents who allow their kids to trick-or-treat will need to consider quite a few things: How will your child maintain social distance from others? How many houses will they be allowed to visit? How will you help your child keep their hands clean and not touch their face?

And then of course, theres the concept of incorporating a face mask (and no, were not talking a Spiderman mask) into your childs costume.

Children who are trick-or-treating (and parents who are out with them) will still need to wear a proper face mask, aka it covers the mouth and nose, has multiple layers and ties around the ears or back of the head.

Get creative and encourage your child to think about how their face mask can be part of their costume, says Dr. Vyas. Opt for a mask that matches the costumes style, or have them pick a costume where a face mask is an essential part like a doctor or a ninja. And as long as your child can still see and breathe fine and theres plenty of ventilation, you can layer a Halloween mask over a cloth face mask.

When you get back home, you might be wondering if you should sanitize your childs candy haul, but according to Dr. Vyas, its not really necessary.

The transmission of coronavirus on surfaces is very low, she says. But if you feel safer doing it, than by all means do.

If youve opted not to go out trick-or-treating, but still want to pass out candy, consider leaving candy and hand sanitizer out on a table at the end of your driveway. You can even sit farther back from the table so you can enjoy the evening from a distance. Or, you can designate one person with clean hands to pass out candy. Unfortunately this year, experts say to avoid having kids pick directly from the bowl because it could spread more germs. Its also advised to skip on passing out homemade goods.

If youve decided that youre not comfortable with Halloween outside of your direct household (which is perfectly OK!), get creative and have some fun with how youll celebrate:

Just because were spending more time at home these days doesnt mean we have to skip every fall activity we once loved. With a little organization, preparation and creativity its possible to still enjoy some of your favorite fall events.

The trick (to this treat) is reimaging and setting the correct expectation. Youll also want to keep the golden rules of COVID-19 in mind: Wear a face mask, social distance, dont touch your face, wash your hands regularly and stay home if you arent feeling well.

Heres what else to keep in mind for several popular fall festivities:

We know this year has been a bummer for many things and events. But just as we learned in the spring and summer, if were safe, we can still enjoy some activities theyll just look and feel a little different.

Theres still time to enjoy the great outdoors and local parks this fall, so take a socially distanced hike and pack a picnic. Enjoy a family car ride to enjoy the fall foliage when the weather turns cool, or hold a faux tailgate in your driveway. Rake leaves, perfect your apple pie recipe or warm up next to a campfire on a crisp night.

Coronavirus doesnt have to take all the fun out of everything, says Dr. Vyas. If we all practice and respect the safety guidelines, we can slow the spread of the virus and still experience things that bring us joy.

And dont worry, pumpkin spice lattes are fall 2020 approved for the occasional splurge, of course!

The Scariest Holiday Based on Its Number of Horror Movies – Gizmodo Australia

Everyone loves a holiday, whether its celebratory activities involve opening gifts, popping off fireworks, or just getting together with family to fight about politics. However, theyre not always a good time. Holidays can be horrifying, but which one is the scariest? Thats what were here to find out.

We decided to count down the scariest holidays of the year, based on the number of horror movies dedicated to the special day. The movies were largely pulled from Wikipedia, All Horror, and other lists, and then narrowed down based on a few criteria. For starters, the bulk (or main climax) of the movie had to take place during the holiday in question. Second, it couldnt be about people simply travelling from one place to another for a holiday celebration, unless the holiday played an active part in the story itself youd be surprised how many movies simply say Were driving home for Christmas! and then have jack-all to do with Christmas. Finally, if it was an anthology film all the pieces of it had to be about the same holiday.

I also chose to selectively incorporate Hulu and Blumhouses Into the Dark films into the list. They cover a lot of obscure holidays, and if I dedicated a spot to each one it would have doubled the list and thrown the whole thing off. So, Ive found a compromise: If theres an Into the Dark film that fits into an entry already on the list, I will add it there. But if its for a more obscure holiday, like the Father-Daughter Day episode, it will be included in a Special Mention section at the bottom of the post.

If you feel any movies are missing, be sure to leave me a note in the comments chances are I chose not to include it for the reasons stated above, but its possible that it was one I didnt come across in my searches and can add it after publishing.

The first holiday on this list barely counts, but dammit Im committed to making this as accurate as possible even if the movies primary connection to Memorial Day is the fact that it mostly takes place on Memorial Day. Besides, 13 is kind of a perfect number.

This is a low-budget slasher film about a Jason/Freddy hybrid who targets a bunch of teens at Memorial Lake during the Memorial Day weekend holiday. It counts, just technically.

There may be several holiday horror movies about Christmas (more on that later), but none were telling an equally frightening tale for the Festival of Lights. Until last year, when we finally got the first (and only) Hanukkah-themed horror film so far.

Hanukkah is about a group of rebellious Jewish teens who are being targeted by a serial killer who thinks God is giving him commandments to kill those who arent honouring the faith, namely neo-Nazis and bad Jews. It was written and directed by Eben McGarr, who was raised Catholic but told Forbes he grew up being inundated with Jewish culture from his friends, and wanted to make a holiday horror movie that respected the faith. Your mileage may vary!

May Day is the ancient festival of spring, fertility, and rebirth, and so has gotten its (small) share of folkloric horror tales. The most notable would be The Wicker Man, the 1973 horror classic that spawned a sequel in 2006 where Nicolas Cage had bees stuck to his face (although that one didnt take place on May Day). There have also been a couple of horror flicks that took place around the summer solstice (Midsommer), but May Day is a bit more precise in its daylight-filled terrors.

The Wicker Man (1973), Witchouse (1999)

Witchouse is a cheesy 1999 horror film about a girl named Elizabeth who gathers a bunch of friends for a party on May Day, and asks them to participate in what she calls a Mayday Sance. It turns out shes the descendent of a witch named Lilith who was burned at the stake. Elizabeth is looking to resurrect her ancestor with the help of her unwilling friends who have a deeper connection to Liliths death than they might realise.

Sadly, none of these are about Will Smith punching an alien in the face. The Fourth of July is a celebration of American patriotism, which has apparently made it an unpopular subject for horror films (except on Into the Dark, which takes up half this list). Even The First Purge, which was released on July 4, didnt take place on the holiday.

Jaws (1978), Uncle Sam (1996), Into the Dark: Culture Shock (2019), Into the Dark: The Current Occupant (2020)

Uncle Sam is a horror-comedy about a soldier killed in the line of duty who becomes an undead monster who goes about killing people on Independence Day while dressed in an Uncle Sam costume. Its definitely got some weird patriotic vibes, as the murderer punishes politicians and people who desecrate the American flag. But it turns out hes also a masochist who enlisted in the military as an excuse to kill people. So, pobodys nerfect.

Weve got a whole series about a killer leprechaun, but this magical holiday is sorely lacking in the horror department. Even though the Leprechaun series has spawned several horror flicks about the murderer at the end of the rainbow, the holiday itself has been largely ignored. In fact, only one Leprechaun actually takes place around St. Paddys Day.

Maniac Cop (1988), Leprechaun 2 (1994), Red Clover (2012), Into the Dark: Crawlers (2020)

Robert ZDar and Bruce Campbell star in this 1980s B-movie about an undead cop whos come back from the dead to seek vengeance on everyone who did him wrong. The big climax of the film takes place during New Yorks St. Patricks Day parade and parts of it were filmed during the actual celebration.

Halloween is a popular holiday for scary movies in the United States, but in Mexico (and a few other places), its all about the Day of the Dead. Movies like Macario and All Souls Day take inspiration from religious or folkloric legends to tell their supernatural stories, instead of just relying on a killer wearing a weird mask.

Macario (1960), At Midnight Ill Take Your Soul (1964), All Souls Day (2005), El Muerto (2007)

Brazils first horror film, Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma (At Midnight Ill Take Your Soul), also marked the debut of Coffin Joe (Z do Caixo, played by the films co-writer and director, Jos Mojica Marins), an undertaker who hates religion and emotion, and thinks the only thing that matters is continuing his line by having a son with the perfect woman. Coffin Joe has become a cultural icon over the decades, appearing in dozens of films, TV shows, songs, and comic books as well as parade floats at Carnivale. Hes referred to as Brazils National Boogeyman, and is considered by some to be Brazils version of Freddy Kreuger.

The joke was on all of us in 1986! Thats when we got not one, but three horror movies about April Fools Day. The weird thing is is that none of them seemed aware of each other until it was too late: Both Killer Party and Slaughter High had to change their titles from April Fool and April Fools Day, respectively after Paramounts April Fools Day was announced.

April Fools Day (1986), Killer Party (1986), Slaughter High (1986), April Fools (2007), April Fools Day (2008), Into the Dark: Im Just F*cking with You (2019)

This is the April Fools Day horror flick that started it all, and boy did it start things off with a bang. The movie is famous for its twist ending, where it turned out that (spoilers!) the murders taking place at the remote island mansion were all one big staged prank. It might sound like the greatest April Fools Day trick ever, but it wasnt the original plan: The film was meant to end on the actual grisly murder of Muffy, the woman whod orchestrated the pranks, but Paramount executives felt it was dour and wanted the movie to end on a high note. So instead, its all champagne wishes and caviar dreams.

Its not easy going home for Thanksgiving: fighting over politics, arguing that your significant other doesnt need to stay in a separate room, avoiding that one aunt who insists you try her ambrosia salad. But there are a few movies that take the Thanksgiving journey home and make it deadly, with films that tend to focus on killers attacking family reunions. Sometimes, theyre even part of the family.

Home Sweet Home (1981), Blood Rage (1987), Sance (2006), ThanksKilling (2008), ThanksKilling 3 (2012), Into the Dark: Flesh and Blood (2018), Into the Dark: Pilgrim (2019)

Home Sweet Home is about an escaped mental patient named Jay Jones who terrorizes a family getting together for the holiday. Its pretty standard killer on the loose during a holiday fare, coming on the heels of Halloween but what makes this one stand out is that its one of a few 1980s horror films that was directed by a woman, Nettie Pea. Its only the last several years that weve seen a big uptick in horror films helmed by women, like Jennifer Kents The Babadook and Nia DaCostas upcoming Candyman remake. Home Sweet Home might be silly, but Pea was ahead of her time.

Should auld acquaintance be forgotpermanently? New Years Eve is a surprisingly popular subject in horror films, with the idea of new beginnings coinciding with final endings. Its actually the subject of one of the iconic early horror films of the early 20th century. But surprise-no-surprise, its also because New Years Eve parties are the perfect place for a masked killer to do some serious damage.

The Phantom Carriage (1921), The Phantom Carriage (1958), Terror Train (1980), New Years Evil (1980), Bloody New Year (1987), The Children (2008), Into the Dark: New Year, New You (2018), Into the Dark: Midnight Kiss (2019)

The Phantom Carriage, or Krkarlen, is considered one of the defining works of Swedish cinema. Directed by and starring Victor Sjstrm, its a Dickensian-esque ghost story about an alcoholic who learns the error of his ways on New Years, coming to terms with how horribly hes treated his family. A legend says the last person in the world to die on New Years Eve is doomed to take the reigns of Deaths soul-collecting chariot for an entire year. The silent film was based on the story by Novel Prize-winning author Selma Lagerlf and is said to have influenced the works of Ingmar Bergman. It also inspired a remake several decades later.

I honestly expected to see more Valentines Day-themed horror movies.

My Bloody Valentine (1981), Hospital Massacre (1982), Lovers Lane (1999), Valentine (2001), Pontypool (2008), My Bloody Valentine (2009), Into the Dark: Down (2019), Into the Dark: My Valentine (2020)

Some folks have tried to call Pontypool the Valentines Day equivalent of Die Hard, meaning its the Valentines Day movie for all the people who are too cool for normal Valentines Day movies. I can understand why. Taking place on February 14, its about a virus that spreads through certain words in the English language, including terms of endearment and other romantic phrases. The town of Pontypool finds itself cut off from the rest of the world as more residents get infected and its a struggle to figure out how to connect with others while avoiding the words that will turn you into a mindless zombie too.

There are a lot of movies about killer bunnies and murderers wearing bunny costumes but most of them have nothing to do with Easter. It wasnt easy to narrow down this list to the ones that are actually about Easter Sunday. A few on this list are connected to the Christian holiday, but most of them are just about bunnies.

Critters 2: The Main Course (1982), Little Witches (1996), Resurrection (1999), Easter Bunny, Kill! Kill! (2006), Easter Bunny Bloodbath (2010), Easter Casket (2013), Easter Sunday (2014), The Night Before Easter (2014), Into the Dark: Pooka Lives! (2020)

Did you know the Critters sequel is an Easter movie? Neither did I! I guess they were trying to do for Easter what Gremlins did for Christmas. It all centres around the famed Easter Egg Hunt, which takes a dangerous turn when the Krites are involved. It turns out their remaining eggs from the first movie have been painted and repurposed for the hunt. Of course they hatch, which leads to an attack on the sheriff whos decked out in an Easter bunny costume.

You might want to sit down for this: Halloween is not the scariest holiday of the year. I know, I was shocked too (well, not that shocked). Even though Halloween is the time of year we all don scary costumes and go around trying to terrify each other, that hasnt cemented it as the most popular holiday to make horror movies about. It does carry the silver medal, but its mostly because of one franchise, Halloween, which is responsible for over half the movies on this list.

Halloween (1978), Halloween 2 (1981), Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (1982), Trick or Treats (1982), The Midnight Hour (1985), Trick or Treat (1986), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), Night of the Demons (1988), Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989), Night of the Demons 2 (1994), Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Jack-O (1995), Night of the Demons 3 (1997), Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), Halloween: Resurrection (2002), Hellbent (2004), Satans Little Helper (2004), Halloween (2007), Trick R Treat (2007), Halloween II (2009), Halloween (2018), Into the Dark: The Body (2018), Into the Dark: Uncanny Annie (2019)

Paul Etheredges Hellbent is a relatively standard tale of Halloween partiers being attacked by a masked killer, but what makes it unique is that the entire core cast is comprised of queer characters. Taking place in West Hollywood, it explored themes of sexuality and gay identity (while also facing criticism for its largely white cast). Even though its not the first LGBTQ horror film, despite claims to the contrary, it made waves during the gay and lesbian festival circuit in 2004 and helped inspire a wave of gay slasher films in the 2000s.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year is also the most horrific! With a whopping 46 movies, this season reigns supreme as the one that inspires fear in our hearts instead of joy. That might seem strange considering its the holiday about gifts, love, and festive cheer, but it makes sense. Not only does Christmas have its roots in some terrifying tales, like the story of Krampus, but the fact that it takes place during the coldest, darkest time of the year makes the emphasis on warmth and happiness feel a little contradictory. Besides, something cute is easily turned into something terrifying. Whats scarier than a killer Santaor elvesor a snowmanor snow?

Scrooge (1901), Blast of Silence (1961), Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? (1971), Home for the Holidays (1972), Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972), Black Christmas (1974), To All a Goodnight (1980), Christmas Evil (1980), Dont Open til Christmas (1984), Gremlins (1984), Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984), Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 (1987), 3615 code Pre Nol (1989), Elves (1989), Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out! (1989), Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation (1990), Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker (1991), Santa Claws (1996), Jack Frost (1997), Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman (2000), The Christmas Season Massacre (2001), The Gingerdead Man (2005), Santas Slay (2006), Black X-Mas (2006), Gingerdead Man 2: Passion of the Crust (2008), Deadly Little Christmas (2009), Silent Night, Zombie Night (2009), Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010), Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver (2011), Silent Night (2012), Christmas Cruelty! (2013), Gingerdead Man vs. Evil Bong (2013), Silent Night, Bloody Night: The Homecoming (2013), All Through the House (2015), A Christmas Horror Story (2015), Krampus (2015), Krampus: The Reckoning (2015), Red Christmas (2015), Krampus Unleashed (2016), Better Watch Out (2017), Mercy Christmas (2017), Anna and the Apocalypse (2017), Into the Dark: Pooka! (2018), Black Christmas (2019), Deathcember (2019), Into the Dark: A Nasty Piece of Work (2019)

Imagine if Home Alone actually bore the consequences of its actions. Youd have 3615 code Pre Nol, otherwise known as Game Over. The French horror film is about a young boy named Thomas who tries to contact Santa over the computer, only to find hes gotten in touch with a shady character who gets the idea to dress up as Santa and rob Thomas and his family on Christmas Eve. What this guy doesnt realise is that Thomas home is rigged with booby traps, and what ensues is a deadly game of cat and mouse that makes us feel the pain of what the characters are experiencing physically and emotionally. Of note: the creator of 3615 code Pre Nol threatened to sue over Home Alone and tried to get a settlement, but Fox denied any similarity.

International Womens Day: Into the Dark: Treehouse (2019)

Mothers Day: Into the Dark: All That We Destroy (2019), Into the Dark: Delivered (2020)

Fathers Day: Into the Dark: They Come Knocking (2019)

Father-Daughter Day: Pure (2019)

Fall is near, its time to get into the spirit – Louisville Cardinal Online

By Catherine Brown-

With the leaves on tress beginning to fall and cooler weather on its way, what better way to unwind than by embracing the fall spirit?

Were a week into September. Already, Halloween decorations are hitting the shelf at Kroger and Walmart. Pumpkin Spice Lattes are out at Starbucks. New horror movies are rolling out on our favorite streaming sites.

Here are just a few of the ways we can enjoy the coming of the new season.

Start a movie marathon of classic and new movies with a horror theme. Rotten Tomatoes, a movie-rating website, lists the best horror movies of 2020, from Feedback to Host.

Love zombie apocalypse movies? Netflix has the 2016 South Korean film Train to Busan, a story about a man and his daughter who travel cross-country only to find themselves sharing a train with zombies looking to eat anything that they can detect.

Looking for a classic? Netflix also holds the horror classic Paranormal Activity, a movie about a couple who think that their house might hold a demon which encourages them to record their house at night.

If youre not in the mood for terribly scary movies, go for a lighthearted classic. Catch up on those Halloween movies from childhood, like Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, or The Nightmare Before Christmas. All of these movies can be found on Disney+. These movies bring lots of nostalgia and make you want to re-watch them!

The winter holidays are known for their holiday spirit and festive music. But who says Halloween cant have some of the fun?

If youre in need of a fall playlist, again, go with the classics.

Think Michaels Jacksons Thriller, Monster Mash by Bobby Pickett and This is Halloween written by Danny Elfman for the Tim Burton movie The Nightmare before Christmas. These are the essentials for any good Halloween playlist. Without these songs, you cant truly be in the Halloween spirit.

Put out your jack-o-lanterns and spider webs now, folks!

From front yard tombstones to backyard pumpkin lights, everything you need to decorate your house can be found online. Try playing with fall colors and cover your house in orange and purple lights. Use a ghost or tombstone lawn stakeassuming you have a front yard, of course. This will give your house a playful look to it.

Or, stick to a theme. Create a ghostly graveyard effect with tombstones and cobwebs hanging everywhere. Use minimal lighting to come across as more haunting. You can easily turn your house into a haunted house with the right type of lighting and decorations.

With the Halloween season on the rise, in addition to the pandemic, masks are necessary for celebrating the holiday this year. Some costume shops are already preparing for this.

If you want a cute Halloween design, shop for face masks that have candy corn patterns or tiny spiders. Youll promote being healthy during the pandemic while also being spooky for the season, a double-win.

Buy your own Hannibal Lector or Jason mask to really catch others attention and provide an appropriate scare this Halloween. This way, you can be smart and safe while also showing off your horror side!

When the season rolls around, its the perfect time to break out the leggings and sweaters. A cozy scarf and a nice pair of boots go perfectly together. Also, turtlenecks are in!

Unfortunately, while you might have to start packing away those athletic shorts and tank tops, you can still dress for the weather in style. Layer up to add drama to your outfit, or keep it simple and to-the-point.

Whatever look you choose, be sure to fit it in with the colors of the season and go for some warmer colors, like orange or dark red. Youll be sure to match the leaves!
