Monster movies like Carpenter's The Thing, Cronenberg's The Fly, and The Babadook prove to be too freaky. But by IMDb standards, they're the best.

Throughout the years, there have been great monster movies from the Universal Horror movies, featuring monsters like Dracula, The Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's Monster, to the giant monster movies, with creatures like King King and Godzilla. However, what really offers horror fans a treat are the freaky monster movies.

While the Universal Monsters are scary and the giant monsters are frightening, the freaky monster movies feature creatures that are both disgusting and horrifying, creepy and scary all at the same time. These monsters often push boundaries and remain living rent-free in viewers' minds long after the end credits roll.

In 2016, a black comedy horror sci-fi film about an extremely freaky monster hit called Colossal. The movie also had a big cast, with Anne Hathaway leading the way as an unemployed writer who accidentally manifests a giant creature while also dealing with alcoholism. While the film was not a financial success and flopped hard in theaters, it was a critical darling, arriving first at the Toronto International Film Festival and has all the tools to be a cult classic for years to come.

In 1982, Frank Henenlotter created his masterpiece with the movie Basket Case. The exploitation horror movie featured a man seeking revenge for being removed unwillingly from his conjoined twin brother. The film's title comes from the fact that this man, Duane, carries a basket where his deformed twin Belial lives. Both twins are out for revenge against the doctors that separated them in a gory and bizarre movie.

Before creating Freddy Krueger, Wes Craven created a very different kind of freaky monster in his 1977 classic The Hills Have Eyes. The movie plays on the fears of nuclear testing in the United States. It has a family traveling on vacation terrorized by a mutant family living in the hills of Nevada. The hill people were all mutated due to the nuclear testing in the area and had become cannibalistic as the movie turned into a war between the two families, with only one surviving.

Wes Craven was back with another freaky original horror monster movie in 1991 with The People Under the Stairs. While scary and horrific, this movie was also darkly funny, with the situations allowing Craven's movie to keep its tongue firmly planted in its cheek.

The People Under the Stairswas about a young boy and two home burglars trapped in a house that belongs to a strange couple. When they go into a hidden room under the stairs, they find something horrific and realize they might never get out alive.

Horror novelist Clive Barker directed his own freaky monster story Nightbreed in 1990, based on his novella Cabal. It was a rare monster movie because the monsters were the good guys, creatures who wanted to be left alone but hunted down and massacred by humans who hated and feared them. The kaleidoscope of creatures Craven invented for this movie was both grotesque and freaky as they fought for those homes and lives.

The Babadook, released in 2014, was an Australian "monster" movie that was an allegory for deeper, real-world issues. Based on the 2005 short film by director Jennifer Kent,The Babadook is about a mother raising her six-year-old son Samuel alone after her husband's death. Her son has become an insomniac and believes a monster is after him, so he starts to build weapons to fight the creature. The entire movie is an allegory for grief, and the monster is the trauma that has the mother almost destroying what is left of her family.

David Cronenberg has directed some of the most disturbing movies in history, and the one that might top the list is his 1979 horror movie The Brood. This is a body horror movie about a husband and wife whose relationship is fractured, and the pain and sufferingmanifests itself on their daughter.

This freaky monster movie ended up censored in the United States until heavy edits and cuts were made. The creatures spawned by Nola are disturbing, horrifying, and freaky creations that have made this a massively popular cult movie.

The Descent was a British horror movie released in 2005 by director Neil Marshall. The movie starts with a horrific moment when some friends are on vacation together, and an auto accident ends tragically. A year later, the women are on another vacation, and the horrors from the accident still weigh on them. However, things worsen when they end up trapped in a cave withfreaky monsterswho have lived and mutated to survive there. The ending of this horror movie also shows that not everything is as it seemed.

A remake isonly sometimes better than the original movie, but in David Cronenberg's The Fly, that is exactly what happened. The original 1958 movie with Vincent Price is a classic, but the 1986 version with Jeff Goldblum is a masterpiece of gory body horror. The movie saw an eccentric scientist (Goldblum) trying to create teleportation machines, but when it goes wrong, he ends up morphing into a fly-creature and has no idea how to cure himself.

Another remake that was better than the original, John Carpenter's The Thing, was a remake of The Thing From Another World. Both were about an alien invader in the Arctic, but Carpenter's version was a movie with one of the freakiest monsters in all movie history. The alien could take the shape and form of anyone it killed, meaning no one in the Arctic station knew who they could trust. However, when it was flushed out, the monster was one of the most horrific creatures in any horror movie.
