A Horror-Themed Romantic Comedy Is Netflix’s Most Promising Original Movie – Screen Rant

On June 24, 2020, Netflix announced that Eli Craig will be working on a new horror romantic comedy, which is exactly what the genre needs right now.

On June 24, 2020, Netflix announced that they have acquired the script for the new horror romantic comedy The Hills Have Eyes For You from screenwriter David Steive with director Eli Craig, and it looks to be the most promising Netflix original to date. In recent years, the popular streaming service has produced an array of movies and television shows in the horror genre, but this attempt promises to bring something completely differentCraig is exactly the man for the job, too.

The new film will be a genre bending story based on the original source material The Hills Have Eyes (1977) by horror legend Wes Craven. Due to this fact, it is presumed that the love story will involve cannibals, a desert setting, and a great deal of entertainment. Craigs most recent work in the horror comedy sub-genre is the Netflix original film,Little Evil (2017), starring Adam Scott, which parodied The Omen (1976). This film in particular showcased that the director has incredible capabilities of parodying a classic movie and injecting it with an abundance of hilarity. While it is his most recent film, Craig is also familiar to horror audiences for directingTucker & Dale vs Evil (2011).

Tucker & Dale vs Evil parodies two horror elements in particular, murderous hillbilly families and the cabin in the woods setting. Craig masterfully merged themes of popular films such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Friday The 13th(1980), and many more. With such an incredible breadth of knowledge on horror classics and the astounding capabilities to transform them into comedies, Eli Craig and David Steives The Hills Have Eyes For You is one of the most anticipated Netflix original horror films for many reasons.

Horror comedies have been largely absent since their popularity reached a drastic decline in the mid-2000s, but the late 2010s saw a re-emergence of the sub-genre with Little Evil and Little Monsters (2019). Furthermore, contemporary directors of the genre have embraced utilizing comedic elements in films, such as Ari Asters Midsommar (2019) and its bear introduction scene. As time progresses, elements and themes in horror tend to grow stale, but a dose of comedy comes in to mix things up and showcase what can reinvigorate it. However, it's a fine line to tread as the overabundance of horror comedies and parodies that came out of the 2000s caused the sub-genre itself to oversaturate the market and decline in popularity for a time.

Little Evil and Little Monsters are noteworthy additions that attempt to reconstruct what a properly done horror comedy can do and be, similarly to what was done with Shaun of the Dead. Shaun of the Deadwas a refreshing pivot after audiences began to tire of theScary Movie schtick. Eli Craig is a master of the horror comedy craft who has worked extensively within the intersections of different horror sub-genres to create unique films. His familiarity with the genre alludes to his own knowledge of its staleness. As a result, the addition of an unexpected element such as romance to the preexisting sub-genre creates an entirely new experience and can impact the future of horror comedies movies or even create a new, lasting sub-genre for fans to enjoy, as not many have tread into this area before.

In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Eli Craig stated that he will be right in his element with The Hills Have Eyes For You due to its incredible uniqueness, scares, and laughs. Fans of the original source material and of Eli Craigs cult success Tucker & Dale vs Evil are bound to enjoy the up and coming Netflix original. As of this writing, there is no release date scheduled for The Hills Have Eyes For You.
