Catching up with former Red Wing Darren McCarty: Meet him at an upcoming comic con – MLive.com

STERLING HEIGHTS MI - He still lives in the area and youll be able to meet him at a big upcoming comic con. We caught up with former Detroit Red Wings star Darren McCarty on the set of his podcast, Grind Time.

McCarty will be one of more than a dozen featured celebrity guests at Astronomicon 3 taking place on Friday, February 7 through Sunday, February 9, 2020 at the Wyndham Garden in Sterling Heights. McCarty will be there on Saturday only signing autographs and taking photos with fans.

McCarty, who won four Stanley Cups with the Wings, says his podcast gets much deeper than hockey. Its about life. What is important to me in life. Ill talk hockey when its relevant, but thats not who I am. Its about people. What Ive learned. Where Ive been. Im no different than anybody else. You have to get back up. You look around and you find the people with questions like what do you mean by that."

People can do whatever they want. This is what Im doing. I want to find people and help people and talk to them and learn. Youre never too old to learn. Its about the message of were all the same. I want it so people realize why were more similar than we are different. McCarty records his podcast on Wednesdays via NRM Streamcast.

Some of the other featured guests at this years Astronomicon are: Alexa Bliss (WWE Superstar), Anthony Michael Hall (Vacation," Breakfast Club," Weird Science"), Dante and Randal from Clerks, Lita (WWE Superstar), Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie), Kevin Eastman (TMNT creator); James Jude Courtney (Halloween), Tom Atkins (Halloween III, Lethal Weapon), Robert Carradine (Revenge of the Nerds), Charles Fleischer (Who Framed Roger Rabbit), CJ Graham (Jason Voorhees from Part VI Jason Lives), Richard Brake (Game of Thrones), Nathan Baesel (Cold Case, CSI: Miami), David Howard Thornton (Terrifiers Art the Clown), Simon Rex (Scary Movie).

I look at who is going to be there, these are guys I grew up with," said McCarty. "If people want me to sign some autographs, Ive got some great stuff. I love to learn and meet people. Im really excited to be a part of this.

McCarty says the thing people want him to autograph the most is a picture from the famous brawl during the game against the Avalanche in 1997. The second most popular thing may surprise you. Number two, I have a harsh rash of people getting my signature tattooed on them. Thats sort of a new thing. Im not here to judge. Im here to see how were connected. That blows me away. To some people, it means a lot.
