Chris Rock Reboots the Saw Franchise in First Trailer for Spiral – Vanity Fair

Will 2020 go down as the year of the Chris Rock-aissance? In April, the comic and actor will play the lead in Season 4 of Fargo, Noah Hawley's expansion of the Joel and Ethan Coen movie. Then in May, Rock puts his own spin on an unexpected project: the Saw franchise. Rock wrote, executive produced, and stars in Spiral, a new horror-thriller touted as being from the "book of Saw."

The film's first trailer debuted on Wednesday, offering a glimpse of what Rock has imagined for the torture porn series. A pair of detectives (Rock and The Handmaid's Tale star Max Minghella) investigate the murders of law enforcement officials, many of whom have met their demise in elaborate and graphic fashion.

Samuel L. Jackson costars as well, and drops the film's unofficial tagline at the end of the trailer: "Do you want to play games, motherfucker?" But that delicious, Snakes on a Planeian sign-off aside, the Signal teaser keeps Jackson and Rock separatewhich might have something to do with the movie's ultimate plot. From the film's official description, emphasis ours: "Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel 'Zeke' Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the citys gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killers morbid game."

It was Rock who approached studio Lionsgate about making another Saw film. Ive been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004, Rock said in a press release announcing the new film last year. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.

Originally set for release in October, Lionsgate moved the release forward to May after reportedly being encouraged by early footage. Speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, California, last month in support of Fargo, Rock suggested that Spiral would inject humor into the spirit of the Saw franchise.

"A lot of times I go to a movie or I watch a TV show and I go, Wow, you know, two jokes would have made a big difference in that." Rock told IGN. "I love Saw, but I was like wow, it has almost no humor at all. So, it seemed like a good place good fertile ground by the way, the new Saw, Ive seen, like, a rough cut. Its still Sawits bloody, its gory, but theres like a sprinkling of humor here and there. Were not revamping it, its not Scary Movie, its Saw."

All told, there have been eight Saw films, including 2017's most-recent installment, Jigsaw. That movie took place a decade after the alleged "final" chapter, Saw 3D, killed the franchise's main antagonist, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell). It's unclear if Jigsaw appears in Spiral, but also, c'mon, of course he does.
