Every "Scary Movie" In The Franchise Ranked, According To Rotten Tomatoes – Screen Rant

The Scary Movie franchise first took shots at Scream and slashers in general before moving onto other films, but which is the best in the series?

As the first of five films,Scary Movie sets up a group of high school students in the aftermath of committing a murder. Trying to keep their past a secret, their lives escalate as a killer is on the loose. Afterward, some of the initial stars, such as Anna Faris and Regina Hall, continued with the franchise, starring infour of the five movies. As parody movies, the franchise tries to stay within the horror genre while also making a joke out of the original content. Yet, that doesn't stop them from reaching outside horror movies to make many pop culture references.

But, they couldn't always succeed at being a hit. The moviesused plenty of slapstick humor. Instead, it settles for jump scares, attempts to make fun of sex scenes, and hits several of its main characters with cars. These are the fiveScary Movie films ranked, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

The final movie comes fromGirls TripandNight School director Malcolm D. Lee and was written by DavidZucker, who directed the two previous films, and Pat Proft. Coming in at last place,Scary Movie 5 only received 4% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Scary Movie 4 marked Anna Faris's last appearance in the franchise, butinstead, the leading role is given to former Disney Channel star Ashley Tisdale.Scary Movie 5parodiesParanormal Activity, Rise of the Planet of the Apes,Black Swan, and many more.Like its predecessors,Scary Movie 5 also features an array of guest stars and cameos.Scary Movie 5 wasn't a hit on other sites either, coming in at 11% on Metacritic and 3.5 on IMDb.

UsingThe Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, Poltergeist,The Haunting, and many more,Scary Movie 2 brought back its main characters for another comedic and terrifying installment.Cindy and Brenda don't catch a break inScary Movie 2 either, as a trip to a haunted house holds many things to be scared of.Scary Movie 2, like the others in the franchise, also makes fun of well-known horror movie tropes, such as a group of people splitting up in the midst of a dangerous situation.

The movie was directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans andwas written by an array of screenwriters. Critics did not find the film great, and in addition to its low Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie also received 29% on Metacritic and 5.3 on IMDb.

Scary Movie 4 is the final installment to star main cast members Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Reuniting to face another terrifying adventure, Cindy and Brenda continue to live a life of horror as they once again are at the center of terrifying events. This time,the duo are thrown into the world ofSaw.

However, that is not the only film to be recognized.The Grudge andWar of the Worlds are also central to the parody's plot.James Earl Jones makes a cameo and narrates the conclusion to the movie. David Zuker directed the film, and it was written by Jim Abrahams, Craig Mazin, and Pat Proft. In addition to its Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie also received 40% on Metacritic and 5.1 on IMDb.
